Celtic manager on why Russell Martin will cope with Rangers pressure
Supporters of the Glasgow giants were underwhelmed when former MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton manager Martin was named as Philippe Clement's successor back at the start of June. But the ex-Scotland internationalist has recruited extensively this summer and his new-look side defeated Panathinaikos of Greece 3-1 on aggregate in the Champions League second qualifying round last month. Read more: Rodgers, who is bidding to land a third consecutive Scottish title in the 2025/26 campaign, admitted that he was looking forward to pitting his wits against the ex-Norwich City defender in the months ahead. The Northern Irishman, who is in his second spell in charge of his boyhood heroes, feels the loan that Martin had as a player in Govan back in 2018 will prove invaluable to his counterpart in his new role. 'I think the challenge always excites you when you come into a new season,' he said. 'I don't know Russell that well, but I've spoken to him. As a young manager and coach through his career, he's done very well. I followed him at Swansea, as a former club, and he did well there. (Image: Craig Williamson - SNS Group) 'Then moving on, getting Southampton promoted is good. To take a team out of the Championship is hard. It's a tough, tough league. But he was able to do that. Obviously, then it was a difficult season for them in the Premier League, but that is a tough, tough league. 'But Russell, having been up here before, knows the pressures. One of the big things about managing Celtic and Rangers is managing pressure. The football idea and the coaching are obviously very important. 'It is important to have an identity and a style, but managing and playing under pressure is what's key up here. Russell, having been here before as a player at Rangers, will know what's in front of him.' Read more: Rodgers added, 'But I think the managers coming into the league make it exciting. Russell at Rangers, Derek at Hearts and Stuart at Killie as well. 'John [McGlynn] has done a brilliant job at Falkirk over a couple of seasons, getting them promoted twice. I know him well, so I know that they'll be giving everything to stay in the league. 'David Martindale is a good man who was in the league for a few years when I was here before. Livingston have come straight back up after getting relegated. Again, they are experienced managers. So I think the league as a whole will be strong and competitive.'

Caley Thistle transfer news: Aberdeen's Alfie Bavidge makes loan return as ICT make hat-trick of signings
Caley Thistle go into Saturday's League One opener at Kelty Hearts boosted by the signing of three signings – two strikers and a defender. Aberdeen's Alfie Bavidge has returned to ICT on loan, this time for the entire 2025-26 campaign. And he was followed by ex-Blackburn Rovers youth player Chanka Zimba, 23, most recently with National League North side Marine, then Celtic centre-back Mitchell Robertson, 20, arrived on loan until the end of the season to complete the set. Bavidge, 19, enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at ICT last term when he scored six goals in 10 games before being ruled out with a hamstring injury in March. After impressing in the Dons academy, scoring plenty of goals throughout his young career, the striker made his first-team debut in February 2023, coming on as a substitute in a 2-1 win against Motherwell. In 2023-24, Bavidge had an impressive loan run at League One Kelty Hearts, scoring nine goals in 26 outings. After making 15 appearances and scoring two goals for Ayr United last term, he sealed a loan move to Inverness where his dad Martin played from 1999-2002. He once again reunites with his team-mate Alfie Stewart, who was also on loan from the Dons in the Highland capital last season. Inverness head coach Scott Kellacher said: 'I'm delighted to have Alfie back. 'He was superb last season. That's what we're looking for again for him to come back and produce that type of form. 'Hopefully Alfie can kick on, he's a great lad, great about the club and it is important we have that type of characters about the place.' 'We'd like to thank Stuart Duff and Aberdeen FC for their assistance with this deal.' Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin said: 'We've had a good look at Alfie throughout pre-season, and we believe that he will benefit further from another period of regular game time. 'We'll be monitoring his progress closely and will review the position again at the turn of the year.' And Bavidge said: 'I'm buzzing, the gaffer always said I'd be welcome back and it is always something I was going to be interested in because of how much I enjoyed the spell last season. Hopefully I can keep going where I left of and start the season well.' Zimba, whose deal is subject to international clearance, started his career at Blackburn Rovers before moving to Cardiff City. While at Cardiff, he had loan spells with Northampton Town, Newport County and Maidenhead United. He made two appearances for Marine last season. Zimba said: 'I'm delighted, it came around pretty quickly but I'm so happy to be here. 'I'm grateful to the gaffer for giving me the opportunity, showing some faith in me and now it is time work hard.' And Kellacher added: 'Chanka has settled in today and he's got to know the boys. We've worked hard behind the scenes on the deal and it was important we got a different type of striker.' Robertson is the captain of the Celtic B team and signed an extension with the Glasgow side in January this year. The centre-back has been a mainstay with Hoops' B side in recent years, first breaking into Stephen McManus' line-up during the 2021-22 campaign. Featuring as a regular in competitions including the UEFA Youth League and Premier League International Cup, he has gained a number of important experiences within the youth ranks. He also played his part in lifting the Scottish Youth Cup and Glasgow Cup. Robertson said: 'I'm excited with this move, the club has big ambitions of where they want to be. It's been a quick turnaround. I spoke to the gaffer who was great with me so I'm looking forward to getting started.' Kellacher said: 'We're over the moon to get Mitchell in, he'll be a massive addition for us. He gives us that bit of strength in depth in the centre-back position.' 'We'd like to thank Shaun Maloney, Jonny Hayes and Celtic FC for their assistance with this loan agreement.'

Russell Martin reveals Rangers transfer needs for Celtic challenge as surplus stars told they can leave
Martin wants more new faces but insists he doesn't have to get players out the door before more can arrive at Ibrox Russell Martin admits he needs more new players to have a squad strong enough to compete with Celtic for the title and in Europe. Right now, the Rangers boss believes he has a strong first 11 available to him but feels they're still light in certain areas. He's already signed seven players this summer but revealed there WILL be more. Martin has also told players who are surplus to requirements to find other clubs, including Turkish defender Ridvan Yilmaz who is on his way out and has been linked with a return to Besiktas. Martin said: 'We still need more players. We need to strengthen a couple of really key areas. 'Mikey helps us a lot because he gives us something we don't have. 'But I still think there will be players leaving and players joining. 'We have to be willing and open for that change. This club has needed it and we must now be patient during it to make sure we get the right ones in. 'With Ridvan, we've had an honest conversation and he's sizing up his options, there are a couple of clubs interested in him so we'll wait and see what happens. 'I don't think we need players to go out (before getting players in). 'There's a bit of interest in a fair few of them who know that for their careers they probably need to move on to play football. ' But we've still done deals for Mikey and Djeidi Gassama for instance. 'By the end of the window, we definitely can't have them all in here. 'But I don't think it's a case of having to wait or saying we need them to go first. Ahead of the trip to Motherwell on Saturday, Martin revealed that injured duo Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane still aren't fit enough to feature. 'Aasgaard and Igamane aren't going to make it. They aren't serious injuries, just frustrating ones where you have to be patient and make sure we don't re-injure them.' Martin will face his ex-Norwich team-mate Jens Berthel Askou in the dug-out at Fir Park tonight - and he's determined to get off to a winning start in the league. He said: 'I know how hard working Jens is and I'm sure he's carried that into his coaching and management. 'He's done a good job in his early career so far. 'I'm looking forward to seeing him but I want to win and it's better to catch up after you've had a win.'
