Disney Cruise Turns to Chaos When Child Falls Overboard and Dad Jumps In

Yahoo7 days ago
What was meant to be a magical return from paradise quickly turned into a high-stakes emergency aboard the Disney Dream after a child reportedly fell overboard on June 29, and her father jumped in after her.
The incident occurred as the ship was cruising back to Fort Lauderdale from a four-night Bahamian voyage that included a stop at Disney's private island, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.
Mid-journey, the onboard intercom blared a code no cruise guest wants to hear: 'Mr. M.O.B.' signaling a man overboard, The Street reported.
According to a statement from Disney Cruise Line to USA Today, the crew acted within minutes. Life preservers were thrown, a rescue boat was deployed, and both passengers, the young girl and her father, were pulled safely back onto the vessel.
'We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions,' Disney said, adding that the company remains committed to the safety of all guests. 'This incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.'
One passenger, Kevin Furuta, wrote on Facebook that the child had fallen from Deck 4, which features a jogging track and is lined with plexiglass safety barriers. Despite those precautions, she somehow made it overboard.
'Her dad went in after her,' Furuta wrote. 'Thankfully the DCL rescue team was on it immediately.'
At the time of the fall, the ship was still en route, nowhere near port. Social media reports confirmed the rescue took place while the Disney Dream was moving through open water between The Bahamas and Florida.
Cruise ships like the Dream are equipped with overboard detection systems designed to immediately alert crew members when someone enters the water. In this case, it appears those systems, coupled with rapid response from the staff, prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy.
The identities of the father and daughter have not been released. Both were said to be in stable condition following the incident.
What began as a dream vacation nearly turned into a nightmare, but thanks to the fast-acting crew and a father's instinct, this story ended with everyone safely back on board.Disney Cruise Turns to Chaos When Child Falls Overboard and Dad Jumps In first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 30, 2025

Authorities reveal how girl, 5, fell overboard from Disney Dream cruise ship before dad jumped in to save her

Authorities have revealed how a five-year-old girl fell overboard on a Disney cruise, prompting a dramatic ocean rescue by her father. As the Disney Dream sailed toward Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, the young girl was sitting on the fourth-deck railing while her parents played shuffleboard nearby. The family had completed a four-night voyage through the Bahamas aboard the $900 million cruise when disaster struck and the girl slipped backwards, plunging 45ft into the ocean. Initially, it was not clear what had led to the girl's fall. Now the Broward County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the child had lost her balance and tumbled through a porthole, CBS Miami reports. The dad leapt from the cruise to save his daughter, treading water for up to 20 minutes before both were pulled aboard the ship's rescue boat. 'This family is so blessed,' a sheriff's spokesperson said, keeping the family's identity anonymous. 'It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome.' Passenger Monica Shannon told CBS the railings had 'little divots and spaces' that made it possible for the girl to climb up. Shannon was on the third-floor deck at the time, one below where the girl plunged from. 'I kind of see something really fast flew by, I didn't think anything of it,' she said. 'I just figured it was maybe a part of the show or just the experience, but about five minutes later we heard that someone flew overboard.' Another passenger named Chandler previously told People magazine about the moment the girl hit the water. 'It sounded like hitting the pavement,' she said. 'Then this awful scream from what I assume is the mother and then this massive splash.' Chandler said she was with her family when the commotion began, and 'Mr. M.O.B.,' meaning man overboard, blared out over the ship's intercom as it traveled between Nassau and Grand Bahama Island. The passenger said she didn't think rescuers would be able to locate the dad and daughter and told her nine-year-old daughter Harper that 'they were probably gone.' Video shared online shows the yellow rescue boat quickly bobbing through the waters to reach the father and daughter as onlookers watched from on top of the ship. One clip shared on TikTok shows the girl in the boat wrapped in a towel while being embraced by a rescue worker. In another, the girl's sodden father could be seen breathlessly clutching onto a rescuer. Travelers erupted into rapturous applause as the rescue teams threw out a rope for the pair to grab onto and safely pulled them onto the jetty.

Dad rescued daughter who fell from Disney cruise ship after mom alerted him: cops

The father who jumped in and rescued his young daughter after she fell overboard from a Disney Cruise Line ship on Sunday morning was alerted of the incident by his wife, investigators say. The 5-year-old's fall — caused when she lost her balance while sitting on a railing and dropped backwards down a porthole — was instead seen by the mother, who 'alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident,' according to a Broward Sheriff's Office statement released Wednesday afternoon. New details provided by BSO ruled out speculation on social media that the girl was propped on the railing by her father, who was taking pictures of her. Some like TikTok user cmd.91, a passenger on the Disney Dream who witnessed the fall, were quick to defend the father, saying 'There has been no eyewitness that has come forward to say they saw the dad place the daughter in danger.' The fall happened at 11:30 a.m. from the fourth deck of the Disney Dream while it sailed in international waters between the Bahamas and Port Everglades near Fort Lauderdale, officials say. Deck 4 is about 20 feet above the sea and has some large portholes, according to news reports. The father, 37, jumped into the ocean to save his daughter. After treading water for nearly 20 minutes, the duo was rescued by crew members, who were launched from a tender on the ship. The ship's medical staff examined them. 'The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes,' a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson told the Miami Herald in a statement Monday. After the ship docked in Fort Lauderdale, the dad was taken to the hospital by Broward Fire Rescue for an injury sustained during the rescue. Investigators haven't identified the father and daughter — or provided specifics of the dad's injury. The family, they say, had traveled out of state for the cruise vacation. Detectives are still investigating the fall and what led up to it, BSO says, but they reviewed the ship's security footage and it lines up with the family and cruise staff's accounts of the incident. The ship departed from Port Everglades and was returning from the Bahamas after a four-night cruise.
