Girl who went overboard on Disney Dream cruise 'was not being held'

Investigators are disputing rumors about a father and daughter who were rescued after going overboard on a Disney Cruise ship over the weekend. The Broward County Sheriff's Office told CBS News Miami the 'little girl was not being held, as erroneously reported on some social media sites,' following chatter about the dad placing her on the ship's railing. The sheriff's office told People, 'while here doesn't appear to be anything suspicious, Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating the circumstances that led up to the child falling overboard.' USA TODAY has reached out to Broward County Sheriff's Office for the latest on the investigation. In the meantime, here's what we know. The girl went overboard on Sunday, June 29, as the Disney Dream was heading back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida from The Bahamas. The father went in after her, and both were swiftly rescued by crew members. Jenn Young, a passenger on the cruise, recalled hearing an M.O.B. ('man overboard') announcement in her stateroom, seeing crew 'scurrying' on the ship and tossing orange rings into the water, and the ship turning. A rescue boat went out to rescue the passengers, who Young said were 'sitting up, moving, conscious, and trying to tell everybody that they're OK' on the way back. "We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes,' a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson told USA TODAY on Sunday. 'Brought me to tears': Disney cruise passenger details rescue of two fellow guests Investigators are still piecing together what happened. It's unclear if the findings may impact anything on future sailings, but Disney Cruise Line said, 'We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.' Cruise goers have applauded crew members' rapid response. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: What we know about rescue of dad, child on Disney cruise

Hero dad dives into sea to save daughter who fell from Disney Dream cruise

A fearless father jumped off a Disney cruise ship when his daughter fell overboard Sunday — miraculously grabbing her and then treading water for around 20 minutes until they were rescued. The Disney Dream ship was heading from Florida to the Bahamas when an alert suddenly boomed, 'Mr MOB … port side!' referring to 'man overboard,' video of the drama shows. 'A girl fell overboard from the 4th deck and her dad went in after her,' fellow passenger Kevin Furuta posted on Facebook. Other tense travellers watched as a bright yellow rescue boat was lowered into the water and eventually made its way to where the dad and daughter were bobbing in the Atlantic as they were drifting off. The dad spent around 20 minutes in the sea holding his daughter — who appeared to be about five — before they were both pulled to safety, according to online posts. 'Lots of praying folks on this ship!' posted passenger Dewayne Smith, who also reported that the 'little girl fell overboard and her dad jumped overboard to try to save her.' 'Both the little girl and dad were both successfully rescued.' It was not immediately clear how the girl fell into the ocean. The fourth deck of the ship is one of the lowest publicly accessible platforms, likely fewer than 15 metres above the waterline. It contains bars, a theatre and an outdoor jogging track, according to a plan on the Disney Cruise Line website. The deck is open-air, although its railings are chest-height to an adult, or higher than most kids' heads. The railings also have plexiglass panels to prevent climbing on their bars. Disney Cruise Line confirmed that its crew 'swiftly rescued two guests from the water'. 'We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes,' a rep told USA Today in a statement 'We are committed to the safety and wellbeing of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.' Disney cruise liners each are equipped with an overboard detection system that alerts the ship's crew to people tumbling from the vessel into the sea in real time.

Disney Cruise Turns to Chaos When Child Falls Overboard and Dad Jumps In

What was meant to be a magical return from paradise quickly turned into a high-stakes emergency aboard the Disney Dream after a child reportedly fell overboard on June 29, and her father jumped in after her. The incident occurred as the ship was cruising back to Fort Lauderdale from a four-night Bahamian voyage that included a stop at Disney's private island, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Mid-journey, the onboard intercom blared a code no cruise guest wants to hear: 'Mr. M.O.B.' signaling a man overboard, The Street reported. According to a statement from Disney Cruise Line to USA Today, the crew acted within minutes. Life preservers were thrown, a rescue boat was deployed, and both passengers, the young girl and her father, were pulled safely back onto the vessel. 'We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions,' Disney said, adding that the company remains committed to the safety of all guests. 'This incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.' One passenger, Kevin Furuta, wrote on Facebook that the child had fallen from Deck 4, which features a jogging track and is lined with plexiglass safety barriers. Despite those precautions, she somehow made it overboard. 'Her dad went in after her,' Furuta wrote. 'Thankfully the DCL rescue team was on it immediately.' At the time of the fall, the ship was still en route, nowhere near port. Social media reports confirmed the rescue took place while the Disney Dream was moving through open water between The Bahamas and Florida. Cruise ships like the Dream are equipped with overboard detection systems designed to immediately alert crew members when someone enters the water. In this case, it appears those systems, coupled with rapid response from the staff, prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy. The identities of the father and daughter have not been released. Both were said to be in stable condition following the incident. What began as a dream vacation nearly turned into a nightmare, but thanks to the fast-acting crew and a father's instinct, this story ended with everyone safely back on Cruise Turns to Chaos When Child Falls Overboard and Dad Jumps In first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 30, 2025
