12 Japanese MLB players to be honored with manhole lids across the country
They say in Japan, you've never really made it until they make a manhole lid of you… OK, fine, they don't actually say that, but they should because the proliferation of honorary manhole covers has been widespread in recent years with utility holes capped by the likes of Pokémon , Gundam , Sailor Moon , Kabosu , Love Live! , and SaGa Frontier to name a few.
Now, it's time for some of Japan's greatest baseball heroes to shine in glistening cast iron and MLB Japan is set to install a series of 12 manhole lids all over the country. Each lid will feature a Japanese player who is currently making waves in the North American league and will be installed in a location significant to their rise to fame.
Iwate Prefecture alone will be home to three of the lids, the most notable one belonging to Shohei Ohtani who was born and raised in what is now the city of Oshu, where his lid will be placed. Ohtani's teammate on the Dodgers Roki Sasaki and Yusei Kikuchi, who currently pitches for Ohtani's former team the Angels, both also hail from Iwate and will get lids in their respective hometowns, Rikuzentakata and Morioka.
Other notable players will get lids in the cities where they were either born or raised, with the exception of Lars Nootbaar who was born and raised in the USA but has a mother from Higashimatsuyama, Saitama Prefecture, where his lid will be placed.

Tomoyuki Sugano – Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture (29 June)
Each lid features an illustration of the player by a different artist, featuring details such as Kodai Senga winding up for a pitch with a phantom coming out of his hand in honor of his signature ghost fork. Yu Darvish's lid also shows him in mid-wind-up but with 10 arms radiating out from him, each one holding the ball in a different way to celebrate his outstanding arsenal of 10 different pitches to keep opposing batters on their toes.
If you want to learn more about these players and where they came from, just stop by any of their manholes. That's because these lids do much more than prevent people from falling to their deaths, by scanning them with your smartphone an AR short film can be seen. The MLB is planning something else with these lids in conjunction with airline JAL, but details won't be released until after the lids start being installed.
While it's certainly understandable the MLB wants to promote active players, hopefully, they'll also pay respect to past greats too like Sadaharu Oh, Hideki Matsui, and Ichiro Suzuki. And even though his stats might not be up to the others, I think we can all agree that Munenori Kawasaki's contributions to Major League Baseball have more than earned him a lid.

Pokémon Center Online tells all customers to change their passwords after fraudulent log-ins
Gotta change 'em all. The Pokémon Center Online should be a place of pure happiness. It's a massive selection of Pokémon merchandise, made available even to those who can't make the trip to one of Japan's physical Pokémon Center superstores. Just put the items you want in your cart, place your order, and wait for your package of Poké-joy to be delivered to your doorstep. Unfortunately, though, it's not all fun and smiles right now, because while fans have had their eyes on the Pokémon they want to catch, less wholesome types have been after something else, using unscrupulous means to acquire Pokémon Center Online users' log-in data. The online store announced on July 3 that it has confirmed a series of unauthorized log ins. In addition to performing emergency maintenance to address the problem, the Pokémon Center Online has taken the step of resetting the passwords of all user accounts. Because of that, users with existing accounts will have to go through the password reset process before they can log in again. The procedure can be initiated through the Pokémon Center Online website here and requires entering your birthdate and the email address associated with your account, after which you'll receive an email with further instructions on how to choose a new account password. The Pokémon Center Online strongly cautions against reusing the same password as before the reset, and also against using a password identical to ones used for other online services. The announcement makes no specific mention of fraudulent purchases that have been made, but keeping a close eye on charges for any credit card used for shopping though the site is probably a good idea, just to make sure no one has treated themselves to a life-size Eeveelution plushie on your dime/10-yen coin. Clayton Kershaw reaches 3,000 strikeouts in Dodgers' win over White Sox
The Los Angeles Dodgers had a full night Wednesday, watching Clayton Kershaw record his 3,000th career strikeout while Freddie Freeman capped a three-run ninth-inning rally with a game-ending single in a 5-4 victory over the visiting Chicago White Sox. Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani also drove in runs for the Dodgers in the ninth. Ohtani scored the game-winning run. Reliever Will Klein (1-0) earned his first win for the Dodgers. Kershaw struck out three batters to finish the night with exactly 3,000, striking out Vinny Capra looking on a slider to end the top of the sixth inning. The milestone strikeout came on Kershaw's last batter of the game and on his season-high 100th pitch. He gave up four runs on nine hits. "It was such a special night all the way around, it really was," Kershaw said. "Running out there for the sixth inning and hearing that crowd roar was up there for me in special moments. "I couldn't have asked for anything more. Give the White Sox credit — they didn't make it easy on me at all. "So it was a tough night. But what a way to end it with Freddie coming up clutch at the end. "I told my teammates — winning individual awards are great, but if you don't have anybody to celebrate it with, it doesn't matter." Will Smith and Andy Pages hit home runs for the Dodgers, who won for the eighth time in their last nine games. Austin Slater hit a two-run home run for the White Sox, while Sean Burke gave up one run on six hits over six innings. Los Angeles third baseman Max Muncy left the game just before Kershaw's milestone strikeout in the sixth inning when he injured his left knee. The White Sox's Michael A. Taylor also departed after the same play with a shoulder injury. With anticipation high for Kershaw to reach his milestone, the White Sox took some air out of the building by taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from Andrew Benintendi. The Dodgers tied the game in the first on Smith's home run, his 11th of the season. The Dodgers went up 2-1 in the second when Pages hit his 17th home run. Chicago grabbed a 4-1 lead against Kershaw in the third when Slater crushed a two-run home run, his third, and Edgar Quero added an RBI single. Los Angeles tied it 4-4 in the ninth, scoring on a fielder's choice grounder from Ohtani and a sacrifice fly from Mookie Betts. Freeman ended it on a single to right against Steven Wilson, while Grant Taylor (0-1) took the loss after he was charged with three runs in 1⅓ innings. Kershaw, 37, became just the fourth left-handed pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts along with CC Sabathia (3,093), Steve Carlton (4,136) and Randy Johnson (4,875). Nolan Ryan is the all-time strikeout leader at 5,714. Kershaw is also the third active pitcher to reach the mark, along with Max Scherzer (3,419) and Justin Verlander (3,417). Scherzer reached 3,000 as a member of the Dodgers in September 2021. "If you look at the odds of doing it with the same team, the margins are very small to happen like this," Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said before the game. "The Dodgers faithful can really appreciate that they've been on this journey with Clayton for 18 years, so it's pretty cool."

Sailor Moon Museum will finally make its outside-Japan debut
After traveling to four cities in Japan, the exhibit is ready to head out and meet the international Sailor Moon fan community. Earlier this year, Sailor Moon fans in the U.S. and U.K. got a special treat as the live-action stage musical, Sailor Moon The Super Live, traveled overseas for a series of performances in London and across America. Unfortunately, both tours have now finished, and it doesn't look like they'll be doing encore laps either, as the producers have announced that both casts are headed home to Japan for a run at the Sunshine Theater in Tokyo from October 9 to 13. There's even a bit of international prestige attached to them now, as they're being billed as 'Team US' and 'Team UK' in promotions, and their respective posters show the Sailor Senshi standing in front of glittery rainbow recreations of the New York and London skylines. But it's not all bad news for the outside-Japan fan community, because while the Sailor Moon musical is going back to the series' home country, the Sailor Moon Museum will be going overseas. Construction crews won't be having to break down and reassemble an entire building, however. The Sailor Moon Museum is actually a traveling exhibition displaying artwork and artifacts chronicling over 30 years of Sailor Moon history, with artifacts from the manga, anime, and live-action versions of the story. After starting in Tokyo, the Sailor Moon Museum then moved to Fukuoka, Osaka, and Nagoya. As the video here shows, it's a very impressive collection, but it's never been displayed outside Japan before. The Sailor Moon Museum is slated to make its overseas debut this autumn.
