SK Hynix unveils 321-layer UFS 4.1 that is faster, thinner and more efficient than the previous gen

GSM Arena22-05-2025
Memory maker SK hynix has announced the world's first 321-layer UFS 4.1 TLC NAND flash for smartphones. It's faster, more efficient and thinner to boot – perfect for the next generation of phones that will focus on slim builds and AI tools, says the company.
Compared to the previous generation (which used a 238-layer design) from 2022, these new storage chips have 15% higher random read and 40% higher random write speeds. For sequential reads, they max out the interface at 4.3GB/s.
On top of that, the NAND package is 0.85mm thick, down from 1mm. It doesn't sound like much, but every little bit helps if phones like the Galaxy S25 Edge become popular.
Recent trends aside, the new 321-layer UFS 4.1 design is 7% more power efficient than the previous generation – less heat and more performance are always on trend.
SK hynix says that the sequential read speed will improve on-device AI performance (since it will speed up loading the model to RAM), while the improved random performance will boost multitasking.
The company will produce storage in two capacities – 512GB and 1TB. That's right, there isn't going to be a 256GB variant, so this will be something to look out for when choosing your next phone (like how 128GB models use UFS 3.1 now).
That is a problem for next year, though – SK hynix says that it expects to win orders from smartphone makers this year and to start shipping in volume in the first three months of next year.
It's not just smartphones, though, the company is also working on 321-layer designs for SSDs for consumers and data centers.

So, if you don't feel like waiting, this $220 discount is already a solid it doesn't have the biggest battery or the longest battery life, the Galaxy S25 Edge is still quite attractive. Packing a large 6.7-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and an impressive 200MP main camera in an ultra-slim titanium body, this bad boy is meant to turn heads. The display gets incredibly bright, eliminating any issues with outdoor visibility. In fact, our tests showed it's a bit brighter than the Galaxy S25+, and it's also a bit more color-accurate. Discover more about display quality in our Galaxy S25 Edge review. In case you're wondering, this Samsung phone is also quite capable on the camera front. Aside from its 200MP main camera, it features a 12MP ultra-wide on the rear and takes pretty good-looking photos with superb detail and vibrant colors. That said, since it lacks a dedicated telephoto sensor, you won't get the best results when zooming beyond 4x. But that's not all! The S25 Edge packs none other than the Snapdragon 8 Elite inside its 5.8mm-thin body. The flagship SoC ensures solid performance across the board, but it doesn't outperform the Galaxy S25+ or the S25 Ultra in terms of raw horsepower. So, if you've been planning to get the Galaxy S25 Edge this summer but don't feel like waiting for Prime Day to kick off, now might be a great time to grab the ~$1,220 variant for just under $1,000. Warning: Thanks to AI you must use "phishing-resistant" passkeys to replace vulnerable passwords

Google and Microsoft have been warning users to stop using passwords to protect their accounts and use passkeys instead. What's a passkey, you ask? It is a digital credential that allows you entry into an app or website without typing in a username and password. Instead, you use the same methods that you employ to unlock your device. For example, with a passkey you might use: Biometrics: Fingerprint or facial recognition. Examples include Face ID, Touch ID, Android Fingerprint/Face Unlock, and Windows Hello. PIN/Pattern: This would use the same method you use to unlock your phone with a PIN code or a pattern. Leading American identity and access management (IAM) company Okta says that it has seen threat actors use vO, an AI tool, to develop phishing sites that impersonate legitimate sign-in web pages. Okta says that threat actors are now able to use AI to create a "functional phishing site" from a simple text prompt. "Vercel's is an AI-powered tool that allows users to create web interfaces using natural language prompts. Okta has observed this technology being used to build replicas of the legitimate sign-in pages of multiple brands, including an Okta customer." -Okta Okta Threat Intelligence watched in real time as threat actors used the Vercel platform to host multiple phishing sites that pretended to be legitimate websites for well-known brands such as Microsoft 365 and some cryptocurrency firms. Using AI to create these bogus websites means that the old red flags, such as spelling and grammatical mistakes, can no longer be used to warn you of a phishing attack. Even two-factor authentication (2FA) can't be counted on to protect you. The best defense is to add passkeys to any account where it is an option and, if possible, eliminate the use of passwords for those accounts that allow you to do so. If you must use a password on an account, make it unique, long, and back it up with non-SMS 2FA. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!
