1 dead after a fire in southwest Saskatoon on Saturday
One person died in a fire in the 600 block of Avenue N South in Saskatoon on Saturday morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department said.
The department reported that three fire engines, a rescue unit, one ladder truck and the battalion chief were dispatched to a fire in the area just after 9 a.m. on Saturday.
At 9:28 a.m., fire crews inside the building found the person and removed them. The fire was brought under control 15 minutes later.
The department has not identified the person, who has now passed away.
A fire investigation is now planned, and the department's fire investigator will coordinate with the Saskatoon Police Service.
The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jurors are set to start deliberating Monday in Sean 'Diddy' Combs ' sex trafficking case, weighing charges that could put the hip-hop mogul in prison for life. After receiving legal instructions from federal Judge Arun Subramanian, the jury of eight men and four women will head behind closed doors to deliberate. They'll sift through seven weeks of sometimes graphic and emotional testimony about the rap, fashion and reality TV impresario 's propensity for violence and his sexual predilections, including drug-fueled sex marathons dubbed ' freak-offs ' or 'hotel nights.' Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking — relating to two of his ex-girlfriends — and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution for allegedly arranging to fly sex workers across state lines. In closing arguments last week, federal prosecutors and Combs' defense team took their last shots at convincing jurors to convict or acquit the Grammy Award-winning founder of Bad Boy Records. 'The defendant used power, violence and fear to get what he wanted,' Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik said. 'He thought that his fame, wealth and power put him above the law.' Defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo countered, 'This isn't about crime. It's about money." He noted that one of Combs' accusers in the criminal case also sued him in civil court. In all, 34 witnesses testified, headlined by Combs' former girlfriends Cassie — the R&B singer born Casandra Ventura — and ' Jane,' who testified under a pseudonym. Both women said he often was violent toward them and forced them into hundreds of sexual encounters with paid male sex workers. Jurors also saw now-infamous security camera video of Combs beating, kicking and dragging Cassie at a Los Angeles hotel in 2016 and clips from videos of sexual encounters. Combs chose not to testify, and his lawyers didn't call any witnesses in their defense case. His attorneys elected instead to challenge the accusers' credibility during lengthy cross-examination questioning. The defense has acknowledged that Combs veered into violence, but his lawyers maintain that the sex acts were consensual. They contend that prosecutors are intruding in Combs' personal life and that he's done nothing to warrant the charges against him.

City of Ottawa fires lawyer accused of vandalizing Holocaust monument
The City of Ottawa has fired one of its lawyers after he was charged earlier this month with vandalizing the National Holocaust Monument, sources have confirmed to Radio-Canada. On Friday afternoon, Ottawa police announced a 46-year-old man had been charged with mischief to a war memorial, mischief exceeding $5,000 and harassment by threatening conduct. In a post Saturday on social media, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said he was "very disturbed" to learn the man arrested was an on-leave city employee. Neither police nor Sutcliffe named the man, but on Sunday Radio-Canada confirmed that he is Iain Aspenlieder, a lawyer who'd worked for the city. In a statement to Radio-Canada, interim city solicitor Stuart Huxley wrote that the man charged "was on leave at the time of the incident and is no longer employed by the city." "The recent act affecting the National Holocaust Monument was deplorable and is counter to the values we seek to uphold in our community," Huxley wrote. "We extend our deepest sympathies to members of our community impacted by this disgraceful act." Huxley's statement also did not identify the employee. The mayor's office did not identify him either but did tell Radio-Canada that he had been fired. Vandalism was a 'vile thing' The National Holocaust Monument was found defaced with red paint on the morning of June 9. The words "feed me" were painted in capital letters, alongside large paint splashes. The slogan appeared to be a reference to Gaza, which the United Nations had described as the "hungriest place on Earth" the preceding Friday. The news that the accused vandal was on the city payroll is alarming, said Richard Marceau, vice-president of external affairs and general counsel for the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. Marceau told Radio-Canada that he was informed of the employee's identity during a weekend phone call with Sutcliffe. "To learn that it was an employee of the City of Ottawa who was charged with vandalizing the National Holocaust Monument was shocking," he told Radio-Canada. "No one, and especially if you're working for the public, should be doing this type of vile thing." None of the charges against Aspenlieder have been proven in court. He has appeared on the list, which documents public sector employees with salaries of over $100,000, every year since 2016. The law society's website does not say when he was suspended. Gilles LeVasseur, a business and law professor at the University of Ottawa, said the city can't control the actions of its employees outside of the workplace, but people expect the institution to take appropriate action. "The city has to showcase that they did their due diligence. They actually did proceed properly as soon as they found out the issues and then they acted upon it," he said. Numerous local and national officials have decried the vandalism as an act of antisemitism. Ottawa Centre MP Yasir Naqvi said it was "disgraceful," while Iddo Moed, Israel's ambassador to Canada, called it "pure hate against Jews." Coun. Ariel Troster, who is Jewish, wrote in a social media post that she was "devastated." Lawrence Greenspon, a prominent Ottawa defence lawyer and co-chair of the National Holocaust Monument Committee, told CBC after the vandalism occurred that Hamas, not Israel, was at fault for the crisis in Gaza. A solemn vigil was held at the monument one week after the vandalism. Many in Ottawa's Jewish community attended, as well as Christian groups and a Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg elder.

Officials investigating after Smith County hit-and-run leaves bicyclist dead
SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KETK)– Texas Highway Patrol is investigating after a hit-and-run left a bicyclist dead on Thursday in Smith County. According to DPS, during the early morning hours on Highway 64 near Big Oak Bay Road there was a bicyclist that was struck by an unknown vehicle and the vehicle did not stop. The rider was found dead and the department is investigating this case as a fatal hit-and-run.
