Exclusive: Maingear just dropped a monster RTX 5090 gaming laptop with up to 192GB RAM

Tom's Guide11-06-2025
Maingear just revealed its new 18-inch gaming laptop equipped with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 GPU, and it can come with a staggering 192GB of RAM.
The Ultima 18 is Maingear's most powerful laptop to date, made in collaboration with manufacturer Clevo. Aimed at power users, this desktop replacement boasts an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 and an 18-inch 4K (3840 x 2400) display with a 200Hz display.
It's clearly a beast, but the real kicker is that it can be outfitted with up to 192GB of DDR5 RAM and 4x M.2 NVMe SSDs. With the power it packs under the hood, the Ultima 18 is set to cruise through load times and crush multitasking for both productivity and gaming.
The Ultima 18 is available at Maingear's official store starting at $3,599, both in pre-configured and customizable models. It's already giving best gaming laptop vibes, so let's dive into the details.
We've seen some powerful RTX 5090 gaming rigs so far, including the $6,700 MSI Titan 18 HX, but Maingear's new Ultima 18 gaming laptop takes it up a notch with its customizable specs.

On paper, this is one of the most powerful laptops I've seen, and at its highest configuration, it's sure to cost a pretty penny. However, as with the Maingear ML-16, the Ultima 18 can be customized to the user's liking. So, of course, if you don't need anywhere near 192GB of DDR5 RAM, you can shave off some memory.
Otherwise, there are a few fixtures that still make it a powerful desktop replacement. That includes the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX CPU, plenty of useful ports that include dual Thunderbolt 5 slots, a 98Wh battery to give its internals enough juice and even the latest Wi-Fi 7 connectivity.

It also comes equipped with a massive 18-inch 4K display with a 200Hz refresh rate and a response time of less than 7ms. Many newly released gaming laptops offer displays with up to 240Hz and sub-3ms response rates, like the Alienware 16 Area-51 and Asus ROG Strix Scar 18, but the Ultima 18's 4K resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio should present gorgeous visuals. Plus, it also supports Nvidia G-Sync to manage screen tearing.
Judging from its size (to be confirmed) and weight (8.8 pounds), this is a laptop you'll want planted on your desk rather than open up at a café. But the Ultima 18 is built to be a desktop replacement.
'Ultima 18 isn't just a laptop, it's a no-compromise desktop-class gaming rig that fits in a backpack,' states Wallace Santos, CEO of Maingear. 'We've engineered this notebook to handle the latest AAA games, creative workloads, and AI-driven applications with headroom to spare. From the raw horsepower to the fine details, this system embodies everything our gamers expect from a premium Maingear gaming system.'
The amount of RAM and storage it can pack is what makes this a beast. It supports modern dual-channel DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen 5 SSDs, with the highest configuration allowing for 4x 48GB memory along with 1x Gen 5x4 and 3x Gen 4x4 SSDs.
As for what else it comes equipped with, the Ultima 18 features a customizable per-key RGB keyboard with a dedicated Copilot key. There are also five speakers with two drivers, two tweeters and a subwoofer that's powered by a Sound Blaster Studio Pro 2 audio system, along with a 5MP Windows Hello camera.
Maingear also states the Ultima 18 is free of bloatware (hoorah!) and its Control Center, where users can swap performance modes, customize per-key RGB lighting, adjust fan profiles and assign macros.
There are some powerful gaming laptops out there, but Maingear's Ultima 18 looks to bring the heat. We'll see how this monster performs once we get our hands on it, but in the meantime, check out how this RTX 5090 Corsair gaming PC measures up.

Micron Increased QLC SSD Performance With Its Adaptive Write Technology

Writing SSDs are the primary storage technology for PCs, industry applications and data centers. In data centers that means they are where data frequently accessed is stored. This is because the provide useable amounts of storage capacity and better performance than alternative technologies for the price. The companies making SSDs have slowed in the introduction of more layers as the cost impact of added layers counts have declined. As a consequence, NAND flash companies are finding ways of increasing the cell density in the layers and particularly by increasing the number of bits stored per cell. However using higher bit per cell technology such as quad-level cells or QLC come with performance and endurance trade-offs. Micron announced its 2600 QLC NVMe SSD for PCs and client devices recently. The product uses Micron's 9th-generation QLC NAND and it features the companies Adaptive Write Technology, AWT. The company improved the performance of this SSD from other QLC SSDs by using multiple bits per cell technology. The 9th-generation product has a 276-layers and its six-plane architecture and string stacking allows higher degrees of parallelism and increases read and write commands issued to the NAND simultaneously to improve performance. Performance is up to 3.6 GB/s. The image below shows the various sizes of this M.2 SSD. Micron 2600 SSD Family The Micron 2600 NVMe SSD is now shipping to OEMs globally in 22x30mm, 22x42mm, and 22x80mm form factors, with capacities ranging from 512GB to 2TB. These form factors, capacity options and a single-sided design makes this product useful for handhelds, ultra-thin laptops and workstations. SSDs built with only QLC NAND are naturally slower than SLC or TLC NAND, particularly with large file transfers. The Micron AWT uses a multi-tiered single-level cell, SLC, tri-level cell, TLC and QLC dynamic caching architecture to improve sequential write speeds. Improved write performance provides up to four times faster sequential write speeds while continuously writing up to 800GB of data to a 2TB SSD. Micron's tech brief on AWT says that its continuously adjusts among different NAND modes based on the volume of written data, the SSD capacity, how the SSD is used and other factors. Using the SLC optimizes for speed, TLC provides a balance between speed and capacity and QLC is optimized for maximum capacity. AWT manages traffic on the SSD by controlling which of these modes is used to enable performance benefits from SLC and TLC modes with the native capacity advantage of the QLC mode. An illustration of how this is done is shown in the figure below. Micron Adaptive Writing Technology AWT seeks to store data initially on SLC and TLC cells and migrate that data to the QLC cells, freeing up the faster cells for new data. This is particularly useful in large file writes. By writing data initially on the SLC and TLC cells performance is much better than if the data were written directly to the QLC cells. Micron says that its AWT drives are particularly good for frequent and large file transfers such as loading or reloading an operating system, transferring large files or installing large software packages. Fast SSD write speeds are also important for those who work with high-resolution video editing or other content creation tasks. Because of better performance with large file transfers, gaming and software development can also benefit from using these SSDs. Micron uses SLC and TLC combined with QLC flash and its adaptive write technology to increase the performance of its QLC 2600 M.2 SSD.

Yes, someone called this $649-over-MSRP RTX 5090 a ‘deal' — here are the Prime Day GPUs that aren't a scam

Let's be honest: Prime Day graphics card deals in the U.S. this year have been… a journey. I've been refreshing tabs like it's my full-time job, hoping for real discounts — and while the U.K. is living the dream with proper savings on RTX 50-series and AMD GPUs, over here in the States, things have gotten a little unhinged. Case in point: people are hyping up a '$1,000 off' RTX 5090 deal… which still costs $2,649. That's almost $700 above MSRP. I genuinely hope you weren't mid-sip, because yeah — it's that bad. Let's get something straight: a price drop down to MSRP is not a deal. Neither is shaving a few bucks off a price that's already been scalped into another dimension. That said, not all hope is lost. I've dug through the chaos to find the best Prime Day GPU deals that actually make sense — including some MSRP-level pricing on the latest cards, and actual discounts if you're shopping in the U.K. So, come with me. Let's skip the overpriced nonsense and track down the graphics cards actually worth buying on Prime Day. If you've got the money for it, the RTX 5090 is the best GPU you can buy right now — no workload is safe from this tearing through it at max speed and the gaming performance is simply unmatched. Been saving and have the flexibility to go $649 over MSRP? Don't let me stop you! Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The PNY RTX 5090 overclockable GPU is a true triple-fan monster that is capable of 4K gaming with every setting turned up to max without breaking a sweat. You can snag $1,000 off it right now, but that price is still very high. But enough showing off about the U.K. — let's try and find my friends in the States a little something. Here are 3 tips for your GPU-buying mission: Got all that? Good! Rather than go immediately for the first thing you see a big red sale sticker on (that's not actually a sale), go for these instead. At $30 over MSRP, this is a stellar budget pick for your gaming PC. I've been testing the Intel Arc B580 recently (review to come), and you can get some impressive frame rates at 1080p and 1440p out of this, alongside that 12GB of video memory for plenty of headroom. This falls into that $50 area of acceptable price increases, and you're getting a rather impressive GPU here with 16GB of video memory and all of AMD's upcoming FSR 4 tech that is really taking the fight to Nvidia's DLSS. Well, well well! A 16GB version of the 5060 Ti at MSRP. This is going to get snapped up quick, so be speedy about grabbing this — definitely an encouraging sign of normalizing prices. My main gripe with the RTX 5070 was the fact it was never available at retail price. Well, Best Buy has shocked me with this MSRP beast of a buy. Snag it while you can. I know, I know. At $80 over MSRP, we're creeping into overpriced territory here. But for what I've been able to crack out of the RTX 5070 Ti, this is the lowest price I can find on my favorite GPU. The PNY RTX 5090 overclockable GPU is a true triple-fan monster that is capable of 4K gaming with every setting turned up to max without breaking a sweat. You can snag $1,000 off it right now, but that price is still very high. This is a sizable discount on a Skytech Rampage gaming PC packing a speedy liquid-cooled Intel Core i7 14700F CPU, a powerful Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti GPU, 32GB of DDR5 RAM and 1TB of SSD storage. I've checked for GPU stock over the course of this entire year, and one thing has become abundantly clear — scalping is not really a thing in Britain. That's not to say it doesn't exist. There are still plenty of cards that are being sold for £30-50 more. But stocking issues don't seem to be plaguing the U.K. as much, and because of that, retailers are selling some models at (or even below) recommended retail price (RRP). This is for the model with 16GB of video memory (the right one to buy), and scalpers be damned you can get it for £2 below RRP! That's over £30 below RRP for the RTX 5070. Given my main gripe with this was the price to performance, this certainly makes it a much more tempting card to get. So the RTX 5070 Ti (my personal favorite of the bunch) just dropped an extra £50 below retail price! Now this is a surprise! Even the RTX 5080 is £30 below RRP too.
