‘Marvel Tokon' Puts Marvel Back in Its Best Gaming Home

Gizmodo06-06-2025
Before the likes of Insomniac Games and Square Enix got their hands on Marvel, the publisher's superheroes inhabited many a genre. But they were most at home in the fighting space—X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, and of course its many, many crossovers with Capcom, which famously include the vs. Capcom series, are fondly remembered and define Marvel's video game presence.
Since 2017's Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, and with the growing popularity of cinematic action-adventure titles, no one knew if Marvel would ever return to the fighting space. Then came PlayStation's recent State of Play stream, which concluded with the reveal of a wholly new title: Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, courtesy of Arc System Works, the Japanese studio best known for BlazBlue and several Dragon Ball fighting titles. The 2026-bound game has caught attention online thanks to its art style and the pedigree of its developer. Oh, and it's a 4v4 tag team fighter, the very same thing which defined Marvel vs. Capcom. (Save for that series being 3v3.)
A behind-the-scenes video for Marvel Tōkon shows this wasn't just a happy accident. Marvel Games' Michael Francisco explicitly stated PlayStation came to them with a desire to 'bring Marvel back to the forefront of the tag-team fighting genre,' a tacit admission that Infinite came and went faster than expected. The game reportedly missed its sales targets after less than a year of release, and launched to decent, but not glowing, reviews. A particular critque was aimed at its roster; previous entries got to have big, then-out there choices like Nova, MODOK, and Silver Samurai. Infinte was not so lucky, and coming out at the height of the MCU, it primarily featured characters Marvel had the rights to, which famously meant the loss of a bunch of series staples, including no Doctor Doom or X-Men of any kind.
Since then, things have worked in Marvel's favor (read: Disney bought all of Fox) that it's been less restrictive about who's in their big video games. Blade, the Fantastic Four, and various X-Men are all over Marvel Rivals and Midnight Suns when they wouldn't have been just a decade earlier. That freedom will be a big help for Tōkon; rosters are a huge draw of fighting games, and Arc System Works showed it's got the juice right away with its opening lineup including Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), Storm, and Doctor Doom. There's likely some intentional cross-mixing here with NetEase's future Rivals additions—sooner or later, Kamala and Robbie will be in the game, I'm certain—but it also doesn't hurt that several characters will use this game to make their debut in the genre. Fighting games are big and flashy as hell, and one way to get people interested would be showing how someone like Miles Morales or the Vision translates to a genre we've never seen them inhabit before.
Also working in Tōkon's favor is how it'll run unopposed in the licensed fighting game space for a while, at least when it comes to its direct competitor. After Injustice 2 in 2017, NetherRealm has kept its focus on Mortal Kombat, likely in part because it didn't know if it'd even get to to keep making Injustice. Now that it's closed the book on Mortal Kombat 1, a third Injustice is probably around the corner eventually. But making games takes time, and the studio's next project is likely a year or two away from a reveal, much less release. Until then, Arc System Works will keep on showing off its roster, gameplay mechanics, and art design to an audience more than eager to play with a shiny new Marvel thing.
With the existence of Marvel Tōkon, a popular joke floating around is how put out Capcom might feel about all this. The Resident Evil publisher has had plenty of hits in recent years that it might be willing to let Marvel vs. Capcom hang on the shelf indefinitely, but it might also renew the developer's desire to get the franchise back on track. A collection of remastered games from 2024 might've helped get the ball rolling on a potential revival, and last year, Capcom producer Shuhei Mastumoto underlined that both companies would be keen to bring MvC back. Having a classic fighting series stand alongside a fresh new one would definitely be a boon to Marvel and their respective developers. We won't know until we know, but regardless of how things shake out, lovers of the fighting game space will be more than satiated.

GODZILLA MINUS ONE Sequel Gearing Up for Filming, Koichi and Noriko Might Return — GeekTyrant

Godzilla Minus One isn't done stomping through theaters as a sequel to the critically acclaimed monster film is reportedly gearing up to shoot, and there's strong reason to believe that two major characters from the first film will return. The scoop comes from the website yamakazimovie-extra, which recently launched a casting call for background actors for a new Toho production helmed by director Takashi Yamazaki. He directed Godzilla Minus One , so we know this sequel is going to be just as great as the first film. The project is listed under the working title Masterpiece Monster Movie (tentative title), and it's already in the production phase. Filming is scheduled to begin on August 30 and will run into September in Tsukubamirai City, Ibaraki Prefecture, just outside of Tokyo. The casting call is looking for people aged 18 to 70 to portray 'townspeople, people fleeing, etc.' Digging even deeper, kaiju sleuth Kaiju No. 14 uncovered something pretty exciting. By poking around in the source code of the casting site, they found the names Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe, who played Koichi and Noriko in the first film. If that holds true, the sequel might pick up right where the first left off, continuing their emotionally charged storyline. While the official casting description keeps things vague, it does tease 'a cast of some of Japan's most impressive actors' and 'an all-star cast representing Japan,' so the studio is definitely aiming high. Godzilla Minus One was a standout hit, not just for its jaw-dropping kaiju destruction but for its grounded, strong human story. The film centered on Koichi, a kamikaze pilot battling PTSD while trying to rebuild his life in post-war Japan — until Godzilla arrives to ruin everything. There's no official title or release date yet for the sequel, but with production underway and potential character returns, this could be another exciting chapter in Toho's Godzilla legacy.

Octopath Traveler 0 Isn't Just a Prequel, It's a Whole New Approach

The Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase on Thursday showed trailers for some titles already announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, and revealed a few new titles as well. The biggest of those debut games is the third game in the Octopath Traveler series, Octopath Traveler 0. As the "0" implies, this game is a prequel to the first Octopath Traveler game, released on the original Switch in 2019. This turn-based RPG makes a big change to the series by allowing players to make their own protagonist instead of picking a character to play as. As the hero, players will have to rebuild their hometown and fight powerful enemies with the help of more than 30 recruitable characters. The Octopath Traveler series is a turn-based RPG, with the key feature of having eight playable characters. Each character starts from a different part of the world of Osterra and has their own unique job with abilities, and their story arc plays out and eventually meets up with the other heroes. Another trademark of the franchise is its HD-2D graphics and the Break and Boost battle system. In battles, players have their own Boost Points that can be used to quickly Break a character, so they can become unable to fight or can be saved to unleash more damage on enemies who get broken via regular attacks. The result is a turn-based RPG that has surprisingly fast combat. This new entry in the series isn't the only prequel for the franchise. In 2022, Square Enix released a free-to-play gacha game for Android and iOS called Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. That game was a direct prequel to the first Octopath game, so it's unclear how Octopath Travel 0 will fit into the timeline. Octopath Traveler 0 will come out on Dec. 4 for the Switch and Switch 2.

GuliKit's new budget-friendly controller can wake the Switch 2

GuliKit is following the release of its $49.99 Elves 2 Pro controller last May with a slightly cheaper alternative that brings a feature that's still somewhat rare amongst third-party gamepads: remotely waking the Switch 2. The new GuliKit Elves 2 sacrifices some of the Pro's more premium features like advanced haptics, but for $29.99 — available now in translucent black or coral red — it could be a budget-friendly alternative to the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. The Elves 2 could also appeal to gamers who prefer a symmetrical joystick layout similar to what the PlayStation's controllers use, or who still have a soft spot for the Sega Saturn gamepad. It's compatible with the original versions of the Switch, the Switch 2, as well as Windows, Android, and iOS devices. In addition to being able to wake the Switch 2, the Elves 2 has a six-axis gyroscope for motion controls like Nintendo's new Pro controller, but lacks an NFC chip for scanning Amiibos, and the dedicated chat button found on the Joy-Con 2. GuliKit says the Elves 2's battery life is rated at up to 20 hours matching the Elves 2 Pro, but other premium features missing on the cheaper alternative include button remapping, adjustable joystick sensitivity, and the ability to record and replay up to 10 minutes of button presses.
