Watch: A City Surrounded by Wildfires

Turkey evacuated more than 3,500 people on Saturday and Sunday from areas surrounding the major industrial city of Bursa in northwestern Turkey, where firefighters are still battling two blazes that have been burning for over 24 hours. One firefighter died of a heart attack while working to extinguish the flames on Saturday night, and three people were killed on Sunday in a collision involving a tanker truck used in firefighting efforts, according to Bursa's provincial authorities. In the rural province of Karabük in northern Turkey, firefighters have been trying for five days to put out a blaze in a region where forests cover 72% of the land, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,800 residents. According to several Turkish media outlets, the flames stretched for tens of kilometers over the weekend in this province, where the rugged terrain has made firefighting efforts even more difficult. Amid a heatwave and widespread drought affecting large parts of the country, Turkish authorities have once again urged caution, warning that the risk of wildfires will remain high until October. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that over 3,000 fires have been extinguished across Turkey since the beginning of the summer. Watch the attached video for more.

Firefighters struggle to contain wildfires in heatwave-struck Turkey and Cyprus

Firefighters battled multiple wildfires across Turkey and Cyprus on Thursday that have scorched swathes of land, forced the evacuation of towns and villages and killed 10 firefighters in central Turkey amid a searing Mediterranean heat wave. At least six separate wildfires were burning across Turkey, and Turkish Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli warned that strong winds and blazing heat were creating extremely dangerous conditions. Late on Wednesday, Yumakli said 10 firefighters were killed while battling a fire in the central Eskisehir province, adding that 14 others were injured. Fanned by strong winds, the fire later spread to another central province, Afyonkarahisar. In the northwestern province of Bilecik, fires raged for a fourth straight day, as firefighters struggled to contain them. Residents were evacuated from fire-threatened areas of all three provinces, though some residents were later allowed to return to areas in Bilecik that were declared safe.
