Brendan Rodgers reveals the financial sacrifice Kieran Tierney made to seal return to Celtic
It's like he has never been away.
That was Brendan Rodgers ' verdict as Kieran Tierney pulled back on the Hoops.
More than six years after his final game away to Aberdeen, Tierney made his second debut in Lisbon.
The defender slotted into a makeshift backline which featured Auston Trusty plus youngsters Colby Donovan and Ben McPherson in a 3-2 closed-doors defeat to Estrela da Amadora.
It was only a 45-minute cameo for the returning hero but Rodgers revealed that was always the plan as the club's international stars returned to action.
He said: 'Yeah, 45. The likes of those other guys as well. It's the first minutes of pre-season so really good to get them on the field.
'It was like Kieran had never been away really. So we know his strengths, we know his qualities and we know he's going to be a big plus.
'I think those guys who came in are a week or so behind physically.
'In that space, you're maybe 10 sessions short of the other players. But that will come, that will take time.
'But you can see from the 45 that he's still in a good place and building fitness which is what pre-season is all about.'
It's believed Tierney turned down lucrative offers from Europe's elite – including Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen and Sevilla – to seal an emotional return to his boyhood club.
Rodgers said: 'In isolation, Kieran coming back is brilliant for the team.
'Make no doubt about it, Kieran has sacrificed to come back here in a financial way because he really wanted to come back.
'But to have that player of the quality and experience that he has now, it's going to be really big for us.
'We want to make strides in European football so to bring that level of playerin will certainly help us to do that.
'I think it tells you everything about what he missed and that feeling that he missed when he left.
'I know the clubs involved because I was part of the process in bringing him back so I know where he could have gone.
'But this always felt the right place for him when we spoke months ago. I'm really happy for him.
'He's not even at his peak age yet, he's still got a lot of years left in him and hopefully we'll have them here at Celtic which I know he's really excited about.'
Rodgers has always had a close relationship with the left-back, stretching back to his all-conquering first spell at Parkhead.
After rubber-stamping a five-year deal to re-sign the £25million star on a free transfer, Rodgers kept in regular contact as Tierney wound down his career at Arsenal last term.
The pair even met last month in Majorca for acoffee. Rodgers revealed: 'I've been in contact with him throughout the months.
'When I knew he was going out there for a few days before meeting up with Scotland, we arranged to meet up.
'I tend to do that. I met with Callum (McGregor) as well. It's nice to reassure him.
'I know what that feeling's like having been somewhere and coming back and the wonder of what it might be like and feel like.
'But it's not really until you're back here that you really sense it. That's probably what it's like for him. It's probably a little bit strange initially but once he gets to Celtic Park, he will feel really at home again.'
While Tierney's blockbuster homecoming is a statement of intent from Celtic, Rodgers knows he'll have to manage the 28-year-old's minutes carefully.
The Scotland star has endured an injury-plagued few seasons and Rodgers made it clear he won't be relied upon every week as Celts seek a deputy left-back before the transfer window shuts.
He added: 'There are certain players that will break. We had to look at that because it has to be more than the emotional side.
'The last few years, he's been unfortunate as well with some of the injuries he has picked up.
'We feel with the management, with him and with how we work, we can keep him fit for as long as we possibly can.
'He doesn't need to be available for every single game. To have a successful season, we need to have a really good squad that we can rotate and that includes him.
'It's just great to have him back. He's on his way through the gears and we know a fully-fit Kieran is a massive boost.'

Premiership trio Kilmarnock, Livingston and Falkirk all made it through to the second round of the Premier Sports Cup with comfortable home victories on Saturday. Motherwell and Hearts had already booked their places in Sunday's draw along with European qualifiers Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibs and Dundee United, meaning there were nine spaces still up for grabs going into the final weekend of group stage fixtures. Dunfermline still have a chance of qualifying as a best placed runner-up but will rely on Saints failing to beat Ayr, who are all but through as long as they do not lose heavily in Paisley. Falkirk sealed top spot in Group A by defeating Spartans 4-0 at home through goals from Dylan Tait, Scott Arfield and a Calvin Miller brace to leave manager John McGlynn in a positive frame of mind ahead of the start of the club's first Premiership season since 2009-10. "The entertainment value is going to be through the roof here," McGlynn predicted. "That's why we've got 5700 season ticket holders - they like what they see. We're now maybe the underdog in most games. I don't think we'll come up against oppositon in the Premiership that will sit so defensively as Spartans." "My one frustration is there was a little bit of slackness in the last 15 minutes of the game. I know we end up down to 10 men through injury, but it's trying to sustain the levels we've found throughout the game. But it's a work in progress and we'll continue to try and make that better." Livi struck four times in the first half as a 6-0 home win over Kelty Hearts helped them finish as one of the three best runners-up. Robbie Muirhead notched a double, while Andrew Winter, debutant Adam Montgomery, Shane Blaney and Stevie May were also on target. Brendan Rodgers explains decision to change full Celtic XI vs Al Ahli
The Parkhead club were beaten 5-1 by Ajax on Thursday evening in their first Como Cup outing. Just 48 hours later, Rodgers' men are back in action, and such limited time between games means he has made several alterations. He told Celtic TV: "We've changed the team. "Obviously, playing Thursday and then playing again tonight, we have to change the team around. Read more: "It's going to be great fitness for the players, and of course, you always want to win. "I think the game the other night was the third of three tough games. We looked a little bit leggy by the end of it, but that's good, that's why you have this period of the season. And that's why you've got to just keep pushing through that. It's the same tonight." Celtic XI to face Al Ahli: Sinisalo, Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Inamura, Bernardo, McCowan, Engels, Forrest, Tilio, Kenny. Subs: Schmeichel, Doohan, Rice, Scales, Nygren, Idah, Yang, Yamada, Osmand, Summers, Maeda, Hatate, McGregor, Murray, Donovan, Ralston, Welsh, Tierney. Craig Gordon reveals extent of ongoing injury after Hearts vs Sunderland testimonial
It was an emotional afternoon at Tynecastle for the Hearts stopper who unfortunately could not feature properly in the match. Sign up to our Hearts newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Craig Gordon has revealed that he will not be fit in time for Hearts' Scottish Premiership opener against Aberdeen next week and will likely miss a decent chunk of the early stages of the new campaign. The 42-year old was honoured at Tynecastle with a testimonial match as the Jambos comfortably saw of English Premier League side Sunderland 3-0. Gordon, the man of the moment, started the game but immediately booted the ball out of play and was subbed off for Zander Clark. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After the match, he revealed the extent of his ongoing injury problem, saying: 'I was desperate to try and play longer in the game, but it became too difficult. The medical team didn't want me to do it. It was too dangerous for them to allow me to play any longer than that, so it became the decision that I would start the game, but I have to come off.' Craig Gordon to miss Hearts vs Aberdeen Scottish Premiership opener and more He continued: 'It's more than a few weeks away, so it's not anything that's that close at the moment, but I need to keep working away. Everything this week was geared towards this game, but now it's finished. 'I'll get back into the rehab this week and keep pushing to see how quickly I can get back. There's no real time limit on it. It's very difficult to say how long I'll be out for, but I'll just get back in the gym and work as hard as I can to make that as short a time as possible. 'I had a disc problem in my neck and it's caused a nerve problem down my arm. I'm not in any pain. The nerve causes a bit of tingling down my arm and it's caused a little bit of weakness in my arm. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Basically, if I can get rid of the weakness and get the strength back, then I'm good to go. Everything else feels really good. I can do everything else in training, but the strength just isn't there at the moment to be able to deal with a full game. 'That's the focus over the next few weeks, to try and build that up. It's not going to be straightforward, but it's something that I'm working on. It's just a rehab. For me, it's about trying to get back as quickly as possible, get myself out on the training pitch and join in with the boys and start trying to push to get back in the team.' Asked if it could require surgery, Gordon said: 'I wouldn't have thought so. I've seen the specialists and it doesn't look like it, but it will take a bit of time.' Special afternoon for Hearts' hero Craig Gordon as home and away fans show appreciation Despite not being able to play the way he wanted to, Gordon was still full of appreciation for the almost 18,000 supporters that showed up at Tynecastle. Both sets of fans let him know just how much they appreciated his contribution to their clubs. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Today has been brilliant,' said Gordon. 'Right from the very beginning, I was here three or four hours kick-off and seeing the lounges, seeing as many people as I could. 'I was out in the plaza for a bit with all the activities going on out there, signing autographs, taking pictures and just trying to see as many of the fans as I could. Thank everybody for coming. It's been a huge turnout. 'One of the best friendly attendances or testimonial attendances I can ever remember at Hearts. That is very just shows what the Hearts fans can do. We get semi-finals, finals, they turn up their numbers, they sell out their allocation and today they've proved that to me once again by turning up huge numbers for this. How special a fan they really are. 'I've had messages from other players that I've played with this morning wishing me all the best and former coaches. All those things, it's been a crazy day. There's been so much. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We're going home for a rest now but the amount of messages from everybody, fans, former teammates, coaches, it's been totally overwhelming. It's been a fantastic day, one I'll never forget. I mean everybody's just wishing me well and hoping that the day goes well. Asking if I was playing, everybody wanting to know how I was getting on with the injury.'
