Girl, 9, drowns in busy pool full of adults as child found her 'lying on bottom'

Ava Rose McCourt, 9, was praised as a child who "loved life and enjoyed singing, laughing and giving hugs" following her tragic death at a pool she was visiting with her dad's partner
A young girl drowned in a busy pool full of adults and children after her dad's partner looked away for "a moment", with another child making the horrific discovery of her 'lying on the bottom' of the pool.
Ava Rose McCourt, 9, disappeared from sight as she swam in a pool at the Clinton Mobile Home Resort in Tiffin, Ohio, on June 28. Her dad's partner, and soon-to-be wife, Christina Bryant told police the girl could not swim and had been using a pool noodle to float. Ms Bryant told officers she turned away for a brief moment and that when she looked back, Ava was missing.

She started to frantically search before another child found her at the "bottom of the pool in the deep end" resulting in a bystander giving her CPR until emergency services arrived, according to a police report. Ava's dad, Jesse McCourt, had been fishing a the trailer park's lake close to the pool at the time of her disappearance.
Ava was rushed to Mercy Tiffin Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the ER. An autopsy will be carried out by the Lucas County Coroner's Office.
Witnesses at the pool said Ava vanished under the water without anyone noticing and had reportedly not splashed or made sounds of distress. One witness claimed it had happened as fast as a person snapping their fingers, MailOnline reported.

Little Ava Rose had been taught how to swim in the days leading up to her death, although she was not able to swim by herself. Officers said the investigation into the death was "over."
In a post thanking people who had donated to their GoFundMe page, Ms Bryan wrote: "Please respect all parties involved. We will have no and I mean no issues over these kind of things. I don't understand how this is our reality right now. We are broken... My fiancé, myself and Ava's bio mom are gonna have some really hard days."
Ava's previous teachers at Krout Elementary School in Tiffin shared their condolences. Lori Harp said: "Ava was such a sweet girl with the biggest heart. She loved giving me hugs at the end of the day and loved telling me stories when I helped with her class in 2nd grade."
Melissa Cimo, her second grade teacher, said: "I absolutely loved being Ava's 2nd grade teacher and she brought so much joy to me."
Little Ava was buried on July 3 following a funeral at Green Springs, Ohio. Her obituary read: "Ava loved life and enjoyed singing, dancing, laughing and giving hugs. She was a very kind girl and loved to spend time with her family and shopping."

Girl, 13, dies just two weeks after beating cancer when fireworks debris set fire to home in middle of night

A farmhouse fire killed a 13-year-old girl just days after she beat cancer. A teenager's home went up in flames after smoldering debris from Fourth of July fireworks caused the back of the house to catch fire early morning Friday. 6 6 6 Merely weeks ago, Jerilynn Brown had won her two-year fight with bone cancer. "She just rang the bell, and a month later, here we are, and I'm talking about my baby girl," Jerry, her father, told KMBC. 'To see a young girl who just beat have it end like this,' Independence Fire Chief Jimmy Walker said. "We are all very upset about this as well." Brown's mother, Liz, is currently in the hospital "fighting for her life due to injuries sustained in the fire," according to the Missouri family's GoFundMe. "Her strength and spirit touched everyone who knew her," the fundraiser said. "To have her taken so suddenly after all she had endured is beyond heartbreaking." Another victim, 52-year-old Marc Anthony Young Sr. also died due to the fire. According to reports, he suffered burns on 96% of his body before he died in the hospital almost three days after the tragedy. "He was loved by so many. He never missed a day of work. He wanted better for us all," his GoFundMe said. Two rushed to hospital after golf course fireworks display goes terrifyingly wrong near Taylor Swift's Cape Cod home Officials said that farmhouse had no working smoke detectors at the time of the fire. "This is a great opportunity to not only educate people on general fireworks safety, but you want to make sure that everyone has working smoke detectors in their homes," Walker said. "Hours can elapse while a fire smolders... We always have to worry about smoldering fires and the fact that they can go undiscovered for a number of hours and eventually can become out of hand quickly." Brown's father said that she had made "every nurse a present" to thank them before she left the hospital in late June. From the families' GoFundMes: Marc Anthony Young Sr., a 52-year-old, was also killed during the blaze. His GoFundMe, written by his child, read: "I'm starting this to help Me and Jordan lay our dad to rest peacefully and respectfully. He was a victim of the house fire on July 4, 2025 in Buckner Mo today he passed away after fighting for his life almost 3 days. I don't even know where to start he was loved by so many. He never missed a day of work. He wanted better for us all. He's a father, brother ,Uncle, Grandpa. He has 2 grandchildren 3 kids 2 sons and 1 daughter. He loved music and dancing (70-90s r&b , soul, country, rap) was definitely a good soul. Could make friends with literally anyone. Life of the party and very blunt in the most respectful way." From Jerilynn Brown's family: "In the early morning of July 4th, tragedy struck the lives of Jerry Brown and Liz Stephens in the most unimaginable way. A devastating house fire destroyed their home, taking with it everything they owned—and most heartbreakingly, their 13-year-old daughter, Jerrilynn Brown. "Jerrilynn was a bright, brave, and beautiful soul who had just overcome a long battle with cancer only two weeks prior. Her strength and spirit touched everyone who knew her. To have her taken so suddenly after all she had endured is beyond heartbreaking. "In addition to the loss of their beloved daughter and home, Liz is currently in the hospital, fighting for her life due to injuries sustained in the fire. As Jerry stays by her side, they are navigating unbearable grief and overwhelming uncertainty. "We are raising funds to help cover the cost of Jerrilynn's funeral, provide essential support for Liz's ongoing medical care, and assist Jerry and Liz in beginning to rebuild their lives—replacing clothing, personal items, and basic needs that were all lost in the fire. "No amount can heal this pain, but your support—whether through a donation, a share, or a prayer—can help bring a glimmer of hope to this devastated family. "Please consider helping in any way you can. Every dollar and every kind word means the world right now. Thank you for your love and support." Source: GoFundMe, GoFundMe 'Every nurse and doctor signed this heart she made," he said. "She made it with her love while she was fighting cancer because she is a great person.' The fundraiser said that the blaze took not only their daughter but "everything they owned." 'It just crushes my heart that this family is probably never going to have another Independence Day that they'll enjoy,' Battalion Chief Eric Michel told KSHB. A firefighter was also hospitalized after being injured in the fire, but was later released, according to the outlet. "I can't say for sure that a smoke detector would've saved lives in this instance," Walker said. "But what I can say is that it wouldn't hurt." 6 6 6

'Our son, 9, died of brain cancer - now our daughter is fighting to live'

Craig Evison and Victoria Morrison tragically lost their nine-year-old son, Kyle, in 2020 and are now fighting for their two-year-old daughter, Ruby-Rose, who could just have months to live Two heartbroken parents who say they were trolled as their young son died of an incurable brain tumour are facing more heartbreak, with their daughter's heart described as a "ticking time bomb". Craig Evison and Victoria Morrison have heartlessly been trolled once more as their two-year-old daughter Ruby-Rose battles against the odds to survive. The young girl has Megdel Syndrome, which impacts the body's nervous system, and the family were told she may not live past her third birthday. The grieving parents are still coming to terms with the death of their 'happy', 'very smart' and 'loving' son Kyle in 2020, who bravely battled a brain tumour for a year. ‌ ‌ Before his death a group of family and friends came together to try and raise funds so the nine-year-old could participate in a medical trial in New York, but the Covid-19 pandemic prevented any possible treatment. With around £100,000 raised, the parents now hope to use the money for Kyle's young sister. As well as paying for medical equipment, they hope to use it to make memories with Ruby, such as take her to Disney in Florida. But when they tried to access the money, charity Gold Geese said they could not release the funds because the donations were made for Kyle when he was a cancer patient and can now only be spent on trials for another child in a "similar" situation to him. The parents have since revealed that they have been subject to online abuse following confusion as to why they were requesting Kyle's donation pot. Craig, 39, told MailOnline: "I don't think the general public understanding how disheartening, and financially draining having a terminally ill child is. We are still recovering from Kyle all these years later. If he needed or wanted anything he got it, because we knew the end result but regardless, we wanted the little life he had left to be the best." ‌ Victoria added: "Kyle's money is his legacy, as well as doing things with Ruby and our other son that we couldn't do with Kyle because of Covid. It was absolutely heartbreaking because I couldn't even take Kyle to the local park just to do something together. It was the most horrible year of our lives." Kyle's family were even sent awful messages from trolls while the young boy was dying, with one cruel person messaging Victoria to say they couldn't "wait to smoke on his ashes". Another stranger also demanded they tell Kyle about his condition, despite the family wanting to keep the information from him so he wouldn't be scared. "The abuse we received, and the things said about him and Vicky was horrible, it was disgusting," Craig said. ‌ A High Court judge will now decide whether the money raised for Kyle can be released to the parents and used for Ruby. Gold Geese argue that the money should only be used for children with cancer, although Craig and Victoria believe Ruby's condition is 'similar' as the disease impacts her nervous system similarly to her late brother. Craig told The Sun: "We couldn't predict what was going to happen, we are humans. Kyle sadly passed. His sister Ruby-Rose is in an extremely rare and a very similar situation. If she makes it another [month], she has outlived the hospital's expectancy. We are just trying to have that chance to make these memories while there's still time and we physically can." ‌ The parents say the £100,000 would go towards paying for Ruby's specialist equipment, clothing, food and physiotherapy. They have set up a GoFundMe page - under the name "Ruby-Rose's Making Memories Fund", in a desperate attempt to raise more funds should they not be successful with their case in the High Court. Explaining Ruby's condition, Craig said: "Its like your heart only has so many beats. Hers is already a ticking time bomb. [It impacts] her liver, her kidneys, she's also deaf. She struggles with basic mobility functions already. She can't sit up unaided herself. She can't eat normally, she can't maintain body weight. She struggled to get over the 8kg point, she should be a lot heavier." He added: "I have a saying of its bad enough its happened once with Kyle, but going through it a second time is absolutely dreadful. Parents shouldn't bury their children, your kids should bury you in a sense. Its very hard." Deputy Master Marc Glover will deliver his judgement in the High Court at a later date.

Missing paddleboarder found dead as murder investigation launched

Authorities found Sunshine "Sunny" Stewart dead in "unusual circumstances" after the women's rights advocate had been reported missing the day previous. A woman who vanished while paddleboarding has been found dead as a murder investigation is launched. One day after she was reported missing, Sunshine "Sunny" Stewart, who had "an adventurous spirit without fear", was discovered lifeless on Crawford Pond in Union, Maine. Police believe Sunshine, a campaigner for women's rights, was murdered and are now appealing for information, reports the Mirror. ‌ Although the death has led to fear and discomfort, officers stress there is no wider threat to the public despite no arrests having been made. Detectives have sealed off part of a campsite adjacent to the lake where the body was found as they probe the death. ‌ Paying tribute to Sunshine, her longime friend, Stacey Yandell, said: "She rebuilt her own house including the slate roof and siding. She was a strong, self-made woman. She could do it all. She could pick up on any skill or trade... She had such a strong personality. She radiated positivity and love. She was like a magnet. People were attracted to her. She was just a light that lit up the room. People were attracted to her because of that personality." Sunshine, who never married or had any children, lived in Tenants Harbor, Maine, which is around 30 minutes from the lake. The 48-year-old woman was a competent paddleboarder, her friends said. Sunshine's body was found under "unusual circumstances," police previously said. In a fresh statement, the force has now updated the community, confirming the death is being treated as murder. Officers have asked residents to remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behaviour. More than $19,000 (£14,000) has been raised on a GoFundMe appeal, and the money will be used for Sunshine's funeral. The page reads: "Today is a sombre day for our family and friends. We've unexpectedly lost the light in our lives that was Sunny." ‌ Michael Taylor, a friend who now lives in Oregon, told Bangor Daily News: "She carried this adventurous spirit without fear. She never hesitated when facing a challenge." Michael also said he remembers Sunshine, a former carpenter, for her passion for the environment and her green lifestyle. Sunshine, who leaves behind a sister, a brother, and nephews, had gone out paddleboarding by herself at 6pm last Wednesday at the campsite in Union, police say. It is understood she died within the following four hours. Anyone who may have seen anything there between 6pm and 10pm is encouraged to contact police. The paddleboarder's body was discovered the following day after a large-scale search, which involved foot patrol and drones. Her cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.
