‘First Night With The Duke' Has Fun With A Fantasy One Night Stand

Forbes13-06-2025
First Night With The Duke is a lighthearted k-drama romance about an unhappy modern-day woman who wakes up in her favorite novel and spends an unexpected night with a prince. It's not a fairy tale ending. At least not right away. When he assumes they will marry, she tries to escape. Is marrying a handsome prince such a bad idea? Yes and no. It's not how the story is supposed to go.
Seohyun plays K, a young woman who retreats from the real world by reading a romantic historical novel. Her real life can't compare to the novel, so she stops paying attention to real life. She's on leave from her job and the bills are piling up. None of that is as interesting as the romance between the novel's poor orphan Eun-Jae and the handsome prince Yi Beon.
Then one day K falls into the novel. It's an improvement. In the novel world she's Cha Sun-Chaek, a side character without too much to do except enjoy her fictional family's wealth. Then the plot goes sideways. The handsome but short-tempered prince, Yi Beon, played by Taecyeon, doesn't meet the female lead that he must fall in love with. At least according to the novel. Instead he saves a very drunken Sun-chaek, who promptly spends the night with him. One night is all it takes for him to propose. It's not just that she seduced him. He's also intrigued by how much she seems to know about the inner workings of his mind. As a faithful reader she read his thoughts on the printed page.
K/Sun-chaek knows that the prince is supposed to meet Jo Eun-ae, played by Kwon Han-sol, a character she genuinely likes. She loves the novel and doesn't want it to change. She's also afraid that if she becomes the prince's fiancée, she might be targeted by the cruel noblewoman Do Hwa-seon, played by Ji Hye-won (Hierarchy). Hwa-seon wants to marry the prince and will seek to eliminate any rivals. Sun-chaek tries to run but the prince is determined to find her and get her to accept his proposal.
Acting in a fantasy rom-com like this must be a lot of fun and Seohyun and Taecyeon play their roles to great comic effect. Both actors have demonstrated their comedy skills before, Seohyun memorably in Jinxed At First and Taecyeon in Vincenzo, Seohyun, a member of Girls Generation, can also be seen in the dramas such as Private Lives and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, while Taecyeon, a member of the k-pop group 2PM, appeared in the dramas Heartbeat and Save Me. First Night With The Duke also stars Seo Bum-june (Hierarchy), playing Jung Su-gyeom, an officer who is Yi Beon's only friend.
A note to viewers who like historical dramas for the costumes, the art production in this drama is lovely and the hanboks are ornately embroidered. The novel's fictional world is suitably embellished with richly patterned silks, colorful ornaments, flowers and decor.
First Night With The Duke is directed by Lee Woong-hee, who directed My Perfect Stranger. The story is based on the webnovel "Namjuui Cheotnalbameul Gajeobeoryeodda' by Hwang Do-tol (published on Naver).

Five Attorneys Discuss Law And Fine Dining In ‘Law And The City'

'Law In The City' is a legal drama starring Lee Jong-suk and Moon Ga-young. Being an attorney in real life is not as glamorous as it is in TV dramas. That's the advice lawyer Ahn Ju-Hyeong gives a new attorney in the k-drama Law In The City. He sees the hapless newcomer trying a dramatic court move that he must have seen on TV. It's overdramatic and pointless. Ju-hyeong should know how unexciting a day in court can be. Ju-hyeong (Lee Jong-suk) has been an associate attorney for almost a decade. What he's learned over the years is that clients can't be trusted. They lie a lot which makes it hard to defend them. He's beyond disillusioned. Still, he's a good worker, meticulous and dedicated. The brightest spot in his day is having lunch with other lawyers who work in the Seokjo-dong district of Seoul. There's talkative Chang-won, played by Kang You-seok; his kind but always late co-worker Moon-jung, plyed by Ryu Hye-young; and the group's capitalist cheerleader Sang-ki, played by Im Seong-jae. Sang-ki runs a restaurant blog called Lawyer's Table. Ju-hyeong's friends tease him about the succession of blind dates he goes on. They wonder why he bothers since he never likes any of the candidates. At least they have each other. These friends meet to eat but also to complain about what's wrong in their lives. Between mountains of cases, they don't really have time to make any significant changes. When another friend stops working in the neighborhood they welcome a new attorney into the fold, the bright and optimistic Kang Hee-ji, played by Moon Ga-young. Hopefully she will fit in. There's only one problem. Hee-ji and Ju-hyeong have met. Also, she's a lot less jaded than they are. Word of warning: don't watch this drama hungry. Since the lawyers meet to try the city's best restaurant, there are plenty of close-ups of their meals and everything looks delicious. Stock up with snacks before tuning in. Law In the City is Lee Jong-suk's first drama in three years. He starred in the 2022 prison drama Big Mouth and before that he appeared in Romance Is A Bonus Book in 2019. Moon Ga-young earned acclaim earlier this year for playing a former gamer in My Dearest Nemesis. Before that she appeared in The Interest of Love, Delightfully Deceitful and True Beauty. Kang You-seok can be seen in Resident Playbook and When Life Gives You Tangerines. Ryu appeared in Gangnam B-Side and can be seen this year in Nice Guy. Baeksang Award-winning actress Yum Hye-ran also plays an important role as Kim Hyung-min, a building owner. Law In The City is directed by Park Seung-woo, who directed Adamas, Kairos and the fantasy drama W: Two Worlds Apart, which also starred Lee Jong-suk. The drama airs on

The Four Proposed Or Potential ‘Squid Game' Spinoffs On Netflix

Squid Game While Squid Game is over on Netflix after the release of season 3, there is a very real possibility that no, it's not over at all. Nothing is official at this point, but there are an increasing number of ideas or proposed ideas or rumors about how Netflix will continue the series from here, something it no doubt wants to do with the first season still holding its all-time viewership record and season 3 breaking other records with its release. By my count, there are at least four different Squid Game spin-offs that could potentially manifest in the coming years, albeit one seems closer than others. We'll start with the most detailed. Squid Game 1) Hwang Dong-hyuk, the original Squid Game creator and master of the current three seasons, went into detail with EW about a potential spin-off he had in mind, which would actually serve as a prequel: "I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun [Lee Jung-jae] looks around for the recruiters," Hwang said. "There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park [Oh Dal-su] or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future." That would be a somewhat out-there idea as it would be a Squid Game show without an actual game, presumably, given its timeline. But if Hwang has an idea, Netflix is likely to try to cultivate that. Squid Game 2) This one's short, but in the same interview, while Hwang has expressed exhaustion about working on the series (including a number of stories that involve him losing teeth due to stress), he says that he is 'not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never." Spinoffs or sequels, presumably, could be more than just his above proposal, especially a sequel that would take place after the events of the last game. 3) Squid Game America has been this nebulous concept for a while now, a spinoff of the series, not a remake, with David Fincher's name being attached for several years now. The conversation has been resparked by the finale of Squid Game season 3, which showed Cate Blanchett as an American recruiter, and while Hwang says it wasn't directly meant to lead into an American version, rumors have now started swirling at this Fincher version may be spinning up after all, though nothing official from Netflix. Squid Game 4) The Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hun, recently commented about the idea of a spinoff for his character in an interview with THR: 'Director Hwang and I have been joking about a Front Man spin-off since the beginning. We both thought that the Front Man or the recruiter could be interesting for more story, because we haven't really explored these characters in their entirety yet. Their backstory is still vague, and their character is still a little murky. To look at the Front Man with a full character study would be a very fun thing to do. So, as for your question — of course I'd be willing to star in it. The character has already been built and designed, and I'm very compelled by him. Just as the fans are curious to know more about him, I am too. That's a story I'd be very willing to tell.' The concept of a Front Man story would leave a lot of options open. We now know he was a competitor and winner of a previous game, so there could be a prequel there. There could be a focus on him during Hwang's 'interim' show. And he is one of the few characters who survives the season 3 finale, so he could return for a sequel show or season. Lots of choices, should any manifest. Do you want to see more Squid Game? NEWS OF THE WEEK: BTS reveal 2026 comeback plans after completing military service

The seven-piece K-pop group reunited for their first collective Weverse livestream in almost three years on Tuesday and announced their plans to return to the limelight in 2026 with new music. Sitting on a couch, the Permission to Dance hitmakers said in a group statement, "We'll be releasing a new BTS album in the spring of next year. Starting in July, all seven of us will begin working closely together on new music. Since it will be a group album, it will reflect each member's thoughts and ideas. We're approaching the album with the same mindset we had when we first started."
