Labuan boosts cashless society and internet safety at Borneo Flora Festival
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) spearheaded the launch, reinforcing efforts to build a digitally inclusive and secure society.
Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), officiated the event.
MCMC Federal Territory director Faisal Hamdi Mohammed Ghouth outlined the initiatives, which align with the Smart Labuan programme and the National Online Safety Framework (NOSF).
'The Cashless Society Initiative aims to increase public trust in digital payments, especially among businesses and retailers,' he said.
Backed by financial institutions and digital service providers, the initiative supports the Financial Sector Blueprint 2022–2026, targeting 400 cashless transactions per capita by 2026.
The Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) focuses on combating cyber threats, including scams, cyberbullying, and illegal content.
'This campaign strengthens Malaysia's cybersecurity framework by raising public awareness,' Faisal added. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: A special meeting was held to tackle telecommunications and internet coverage issues on Malaysian highways, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The discussion involved Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM). The meeting was prompted by frequent complaints from highway users about dropped calls and poor connectivity. Nanta stated, 'To date, approximately 50 kilometres of highways have been identified as not receiving telecommunications coverage, including in several sections of the PLUS Expressway, West Coast Expressway (WCE) and East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2).' Key outcomes from the meeting include the formation of a Special LLM-MCMC Task Force. This team will coordinate an action plan, identify critical drop call zones, and assess the need for additional telecom infrastructure. Highway concessionaires will also be engaged to implement both short and long-term solutions. Nanta emphasized the urgency of the matter, saying, 'This issue cannot be taken lightly. In an all-digital world, access to the internet and telecommunications network is no longer a luxury, but a basic necessity, including when on the highway.' Additionally, regional LLM and state MCMC teams are conducting on-site inspections to evaluate power supply facilities for infrastructure upgrades. Nanta also proposed MCMC's direct involvement in resolving frequency disruptions and supporting the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system. He reaffirmed the government's commitment, stating, 'Our commitment is clear, not only to build roads, but also to ensure that the people are always connected smoothly and safely.' – Bernama

She highlighted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's pivotal role in mediating a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, showcasing Malaysia's diplomatic leadership. 'This achievement underscores Malaysia's dedication to maintaining Southeast Asia as a peaceful and neutral region, which is vital for trade and innovation,' Teo said during her speech at the Malaysia-China Tech & Trade Cooperation Exchange Conference 2025. She emphasised that stability and technological progress go hand in hand for shared prosperity. Malaysia continues to prioritise a secure digital ecosystem under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) enforces technical standards to ensure safety, interoperability, and reliability in digital services. 'These measures protect consumers and align our infrastructure with global benchmarks,' Teo added. The conference, hosted by Ramssol Group Bhd with Equinix and Tencent Cloud, introduced advanced AI and cloud solutions to Malaysian businesses. JENDELA Phase 2 starts September with hybrid telecom approach
KUALA LUMPUR: The second phase of Malaysia's National Digital Network (JENDELA) will start in September, adopting a hybrid approach to speed up nationwide connectivity, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced. Nearly 3,000 sites will be upgraded under Phase 2, moving away from traditional tower construction. 'We are considering hybrid solutions, like 30-metre monopoles, instead of full-sized towers where feasible. This will accelerate deployment,' Fahmi said during a Dewan Rakyat session. The minister was responding to Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng, who raised concerns over poor 4G and 5G coverage in rural schools. Fahmi confirmed that 4G coverage in Julau's populated areas has reached 58.28 per cent, with 43 new telecom towers and 44 upgraded transmitter stations completed as of June 30. Fibre-optic access has also been extended to 1,391 premises. However, 5G rollout in Julau is still under review, with priority given to urban and industrial zones. 'Rural areas, including Julau, will receive 5G in stages based on infrastructure readiness,' he added. Sarawak's SMART 600 initiative is complementing federal efforts, with 29 new towers already operational and 15 under construction. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has partnered with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) to boost connectivity in the state. Additionally, 12 Point of Presence (PoP) broadband hubs in Julau now offer high-speed internet, with 1,225 subscription ports supporting speeds up to 1Gbps. – Bernama
