'Work 10 Hours A Day, Exhausted Like A Dog': Chinese Delivery Man Breaks Down In Viral Video

NDTV6 days ago
A Chinese delivery executive burst into tears in the middle of his shift and recorded a video to detail his struggle and one regret: dropping out of school at an early age. Dressed in his yellow uniform, the man shed light on the mental and physical strain he endured daily as part of the gig economy.
He said he worked 10-hour shifts without rest, feeling "exhausted like a dog," and still struggling to make ends meet. Despite my teacher's warning me against dropping out of school, he said, "I did so and now I realise the importance of their advice".
"And now? I deliver food for over 10 hours a day, exhausted like a dog. I don't dare slack off even for a second, because the moment I do, life punishes me with an empty stomach. How could I not feel anxious?" he said.
The man said he felt overwhelmed by the job and the guilt of not being able to provide for his parents or live a life of his own choosing.
"I can't give my parents the life they deserve, I can't even live the life the way I want either. It breaks my heart. But who can I even talk to about it?" he added.
"The man, who says he never went to university, opens up about the brutal reality of his daily life, delivering food for more than ten hours a day, without rest, security, or long-term stability," read the caption of the video posted to Instagram.

Thousands of viewers expressed sympathy and concern for the delivery executive.
A user wrote, "Oh brother, don't cry, even people who graduated struggling nowadays, don't worry."
"Being born to parents who can give you opportunities is such a blessing many don't understand," said another.
"I think there should be something like a second chance for everyone. They will get basic necessities while learning/getting degrees, no matter how old they are," read another comment.
Last year, a 55-year-old food deliveryman in China died while napping on his electric bike after working an 18-hour shift. The incident occurred in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, in eastern China.

Real bonds or reel friends? Youngsters reassess online friendships

Patna: In an increasingly interconnected world, the nature of friendship is being reshaped by social media and rapid technological advancement. From the first point of contact to how bonds are maintained across distances, digital platforms have redefined friendships, offering both convenience and complexity. This Friendship Day, young people are reflecting on what it truly means to be a "friend" in the digital era. While online platforms offer multiple avenues for communication, there is broad agreement that in-person interaction remains unmatched. Many young people acknowledge that packed schedules, geographical distance, and a lack of common free time often push them towards digital connections. Ayush Anand, a private sector employee in Patna, relies primarily on Instagram to keep in touch with friends. "I can connect there by sharing memes and reels. Without speaking, one can still feel connected," he he prefers meeting in person to create lasting memories, Ayush also maintains longstanding online friendships. "There are many online friends I've never met in person, but we've been connected for the past eight to nine years. We were all added to a cricket group on an instant messaging app. There were about 250 members, but a few of us became real friends," he said.A recurring concern among the youth is the uncertainty over the authenticity of online personas. Many question how one can truly know someone without meeting them face-to-face. Yet, paradoxically, some find comfort in online friendships, citing a lower risk of disappointment due to the limited emotional investment at the outset. Satyam Kumar, a resident of Nehru Nagar, prefers the same instant messaging platform for its group chat feature. "Friends share memes and reels and that starts conversations without needing to talk constantly," he said. Though he has numerous online acquaintances, he considers those connections relatively shallow. "Real closeness still needs real-world interaction," he added. Dr Niska Sinha, a senior psychiatrist at IGIMS, Patna, describes today's digital friendships as characterised by an "easy connect, easy disconnect" dynamic. "For younger children, what they see as friendship is often an addiction to online engagement," she Sinha acknowledged the positives of digital interaction, such as keeping in touch with distant friends, building communities for those who feel isolated, and connecting individuals with shared interests. However, she warned that these interactions can lack emotional depth. "The absence of non-verbal cues and emotional nuance online can hinder true understanding. Over-reliance on digital communication may paradoxically heighten feelings of loneliness," she advises young people to use digital platforms as a supplement — not a substitute — for real-life interactions. "Don't hesitate to take breaks and invest time in nurturing friendships offline," she added. Chinese diver survives 5 days trapped in underwater cave, rescued after final signal

A Chinese diver from Furong Town in Xiangxi, Hunan province, miraculously survived after spending five days trapped inside an underwater cave. A Chinese diver survived five days in an underwater cave by finding an air pocket and signalling rescuers with a flashlight as oxygen ran critically low.(Representational image/Unsplash) As reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the man, known only as Wang and believed to be in his 40s, disappeared on July 19 while diving in a local river with a friend. (Also read: China's first robot joins PhD programme in drama and film to study traditional opera) The river, known for its depth and complex cave networks, features an underwater cave entrance around nine metres below the surface. Wang vanished just five minutes into the dive, prompting his friend to raise the alarm. Search teams race against time Local police swiftly launched a rescue mission and requested assistance from the Xiangxi Shuguang Rescue Team as well as cave-diving specialists from Baise, a city in the Guangxi autonomous region. Despite two deep dives by Baise's special police cave team, initial efforts yielded no signs of Wang. During one dive, rescuers thought they heard a faint knocking sound from within the cave. Surface teams were ordered to cut their engine noise to listen more closely, but the sound did not reoccur. Divers eventually descended to a depth of 130 metres without success. A desperate signal leads to breakthrough On their ascent, at around the 100-metre mark, rescuers finally caught sight of Wang. Tian Yanglin, captain of the Xiangxi Shuguang Rescue Team, told the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald, as cited by SCMP, that Wang had initially seen the divers swim past him from above but was unable to make contact. As his oxygen level dropped to just four per cent, he made a final effort by jumping into the water from a pocket of trapped air and waving a charged flashlight. 'That moment was his last chance,' Tian said. Survival in extreme conditions Wang survived in a hollow air-filled section of the cave. Trapped and disoriented, he lost all sense of time and endured by eating raw fish. Miraculously, he was in good physical condition when rescued and managed to walk unaided to the ambulance. His first words to rescuers, after days of unimaginable isolation and stress, were simply: 'Do you have a cigarette?'
