James Gunn Responds to SUPERMAN's Controversial Origin Change After Fan Backlash — GeekTyrant

Geek Tyrant16-07-2025
James Gunn's Superman has been praised for staying true to the heart of the character, but one big twist has fans divided, and that it that Jor-El's motives aren't as noble as we're used to.
In the film, Lex Luthor uncovers a holographic message from Jor-El and Lara-El that reveals a shocking revelation, Kal-El wasn't just sent to Earth as a beacon of hope.
According to the message, Jor-El intended for his son to eventually subjugate the planet and its people. Clark had no idea this was the case as the full message was damaged. This is a departure from the classic origin, where Jor-El's mission is to save his son, not conquer worlds.
The change sparked plenty of debate online, and Gunn recently addressed the controversy during an interview with IGN, assuring fans that the twist doesn't betray Superman's core values:
"I'm a huge Superman fan, so first of all I had to trust myself that I was going to honor the pieces of Superman that we needed to keep the same. And also allow myself to make changes where changes might work and wouldn't go against the integrity of who the character is.
'And so I think that was [...] simply dealing with allowing ourselves to change part of the story in a way that was interesting for the DCU, but that wasn't [something] that went against who Superman was. And has been something that's been played with in the comics before."
This isn't the first time DC has explored morally gray Kryptonian origins, but seeing it on the big screen was enough to ignite heated discussion among longtime fans.
One of the most surprising elements of the film is Jor-El himself, played by Guardians of the Galaxy star Bradley Cooper in a secret cameo. Gunn explained why Cooper was the right fit for the role once made iconic by Marlon Brando and later Russell Crowe:
"I needed somebody who could play Jor-El… who had the stature of what we imagine that character being. Somebody who could walk in the footsteps of Marlon Brando."
Whether you love or hate this bold twist, Gunn clearly stands by his vision, confident that the essence of Superman remains intact. So what do you think? Did this origin shake-up add depth to the story or cross the line?

Jurassic World Rebirth devours the competition at weekend box office

The summer tentpole films are rolling out, and as expected, Jurassic World Rebirth had a massive opening over the holiday weekend. The film opened to $91.5 million at the box office, more than three times the amount the runner-up, F1: The Movie, made the same weekend. It's also nearly double F1's opening (the racing film opened to $57 million the week before). Over the course of five days, Jurassic World Rebirth has racked up a respectable $147,304,630, more than F1 has made in its two weeks in theaters. Jurassic is the only debut on the box office charts, and it's off to a good start. However, its five-day total is comparable to what Lilo & Stitch made in its first weekend ($146,016,175; now sitting at the number seven spot, the film has grossed $972,720,147 worldwide and counting). However, Variety notes that Jurassic's numbers are down for the dino franchise. The initial reboot, 2015's Jurassic World, opened to $208 million; 2018's Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom opened to $148 million; and 2022's Jurassic World Dominion opened to $145 million. Those films also all had significantly higher five-day totals than Rebirth, though the downward trend for each suggests that people simply aren't as excited about the prospect of a Jurassic World anymore—perhaps the suspension of disbelief as to why people keep bringing their kids around raging dinosaurs has worn a bit thin. We'll see how Rebirth holds up when Superman flies into theaters this coming weekend. The other notable new entry on last weekend's domestic box office chart is the restored, remastered, and re-released This Is Spinal Tap, which sits at number 10 having made $931,737 in its re-opening weekend. The success has spurred some additional dates tacked on to the limited engagement, with new showtimes on July 7, 8, and 9. In a statement (via Deadline), Bleecker Street Distribution President Kyle Davies said, 'We are thrilled with these early results of our re-release of [Rob Reiner's] original This Is Spinal Tap. While showtimes were limited this weekend, and the initial engagement carries into Monday, we experienced sell-out shows across the country, demonstrating that interest in the world of Spinal Tap still 'goes to 11.' Glad fans and newcomers alike got a taste of these musical legends as we head into the release of Spinal Tap II later this year.' You can check out the full top 10, courtesy Box Office Mojo, below. ‘Peacemaker' Came to Comic-Con to Tease the End of Its Own Universe

The most in-your-face explanation for what's going on with Peacemaker in the new DCU can be found outside of San Diego Comic-Con. Simply put—as soon as you walk in past the HBO Max activation marquee for the Peacemaker 'Peacefest' in the Gaslamp District, you see a sign that reads, 'Relax, it's a state of emergency; you're fucked', dude.' io9 was invited to scope out the space, which allowed for some rocking fun as you walk in through a Quantum Portal into the 'altered dimension' of the Peacemaker universe. Hmm, we suspect Lex Luthor's pocket dimension, and that crack Clark and Mr. Terrific noticed at the end of Superman, might have something to do with this. The timed experience gives you a chance to look at some of the props for the series, which returns August 21 on HBO Max. One of the major things we noticed right away was the giant Mighty Crabjoys poster adorning one of Peacemaker's helmet walls, so we at least get the sense that Superman might not be the only person in their fan club. Which really, lucky for Peacemaker, in case he needs help from Big Red whenever Rick Flagg Sr. finally gets around to revenge. Peacefest also invited con attendees to get their rock show on to the show's theme song with a live band, while stations offered the usual photo-ops, drinks, and some Mortal Kombat stations to celebrate Peacemaker's addition to the roster for Mortal Kombat 1. One of the signs our Peacemaker friends might be in danger was also literally this TV under a 'Lost and Found' sign with an arrow pointing to the show playing on a real fuzzy and deteriorating VHS tape. It was, however, the closing song that gave way to some really distressing spoiler-ish answers. As the show ended, the band left, but Peacemaker sent a message to GTFO while another flashed across his face: 'Warning: Alternate Dimension Collapsing.' We know season 2 is going to be dealing with bridging the gap between the old DCU and DC Studios' post-Superman, canon, but this makes it feel like stakes are going to be very dire as Peacemaker tries to make it over to the new normal in one piece… especially as we know there's going to be some Peacemaker vs. Peacemaker shenanigans as well. We'll find out more at the San Diego Comic-Con panel later this week! Check out the gallery below for more hints and a look inside Peacefest. Stay tuned here at io9 for more SDCC '25 and Peacemaker coverage. Want more io9 news? 71-Year-Old Jockey Perry Ouzts Approaching New Record

71-Year-Old Jockey Perry Ouzts Approaching New Record originally appeared on Paulick Report. "Ironman" jockey Perry Ouzts, 71, will start a new record for starts in a Thoroughbred horse race in this Saturday's fifth race at Belterra Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. The veteran jockey will enter the starting gate for a 53,579th time, eclipsing the previous record set by retired California-based rider Russell Baze. At this writing, Ouzts sports a record of 53,570 starts– 7,514 wins – 7,013 seconds – 6,694 thirds, for earnings of $53,055,913. The next active rider is Hall of Famer John Velazquez with 37,363 mounts and 6,703 is also the record holder as the oldest jockey to win a race in North America — a feat he accomplished last summer. Ouzts has spent most of his career riding in Northern Kentucky and Ohio. Though he has never won a graded stakes race, he was the subject of an award-winning 2015 documentary "Ironman Perry Ouzts," produced by the Hennegan ranks fifth all-time in wins, trailing only Russell Baze (12,842 wins), Laffit Pincay Jr. (9,530), William Shoemaker (8,833), and Pat Day (8,803).Ouzts told John Engelhardt that loyalty has been a key factor in his success. He credits the support of trainers W.J. Danner, Larry Holt, Joe Woodard, Bill Connelly, Matt Kordenbrock, Barb Riley and Larry Smith for the many winners they have put him up on. He has also had the same agent, Jamie Fowler, for 38 years. Fowler contracted throat cancer in February of 2023 and has undergone 50 radiation treatments, several surgeries, and 10 months of physical therapy. This week, Fowler was declared cancer-free. According to Ouzts: 'I asked if he could still do the job from home when it was discovered, and with texting, video replays and other on-line features, he hasn't missed a beat.' He has won 35 meet titles at River Downs/Belterra Park, 13 titles at the now defunct, Beulah Park and 2 titles at Turfway Park. He won the last race at River Downs and the first race there under its new name Belterra Park. He was the first jockey to win a stakes race at 70 years old. His richest races won were the $200,000 Cradle Stakes (2007), the $100,000 Queen City Oaks (1988) and the $100,000 Green Carpet Stakes (this season). He won four races on a horse named Oats N' Ouzts. He and his wife, Toni have two sons – Kyle (35) and Tyler (32). This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Jul 24, 2025, where it first appeared.
