Sampdoria avoid relegation despite abandonment

BBC News22-06-2025
Sampdoria avoided a first relegation to the third tier of Italian football despite their Serie B relegation play-off against Salernitana being abandoned after 65 minutes. The former Serie A champions were leading 2-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate when players were ordered off the field because of unrest from Salernitana supporters in the stands.Anger began early on in the match when Gian Marco Ferrari thought he had given Salernitana the lead midway through the first half, only for his goal to be ruled out for handball.Four minutes later Massimo Coda scored for Sampdoria before Giuseppe Sibilli made it 4-0 on aggregate just after the break. The home fans in Salerno immediately turned on their team following the second goal, with relegation to Serie C looking all but certain.Flares, firecrackers and chairs were thrown on to the field and the game was halted numerous times before the players were taken off the field with 65 minutes on the clock. With players of both sides in the dressing room, riot police tried to restore order to the situation.Referee Daniele Doveri attempted to get the game restarted 10 minutes later but objects began to rain down once again and the match was abandoned.Salernitana only needed an aggregate draw to stay up because of their higher placing in the table. The second leg of the play-off, which was originally scheduled for Friday, took place on Sunday following a severe food poisoning outbreak in the Salernitana camp.A formal request to reschedule the match was accepted after 21 of their travelling party became ill following last week's 2-0 first-leg defeat.

England's Lionesses get hero's welcome as they land back in UK after Euros glory

The Lionesses landed back in England this afternoon to an amazing welcome. The plane carrying the team arrived at Southend airport in Essex. The FA tried to keep the airport they were arriving in secret, for security reasons, but hundreds of fans managed to find out and arrived to cheer their heroes. Some waited for over two hours in the warm sun waiting for the flight to arrive from Zurich. Many brought St George flags which they draped over the fences outside the tiny private jet terminal. FA staff also attached several of their own flags to welcome the team home. Chloe Richardson, 19, from Basildon said: 'I saw on a local website that the England plane was coming in and I rushed here from home. 'They have done so well. They've made the nation proud. We are so pleased they came back to Southend.' The only hotel next to the airport, the Holiday Inn, put up St George flags on their windows of the restaurant which the players could clearly see when they landed. Several supporters sat in the bar supping beers as they followed the Titan Air flight on tracking apps. The champions then headed off to a reception at 10 Downing Street. Tomorrow will see a victory parade through central London. Today was certainly a far cry from the last time I went to an airport to cover the arrival of an England team. It was 35 years ago way back in 1990. Hundreds of thousands of people descended on Luton airport to welcome the men's team return from the Italia '90 tournament. It was a vastly different era - Paul Gascoigne was wearing a pair of fake breasts. Gazza was in his element in scenes that just wouldn't happen today. In 1990 England fans had been starved of success; they celebrated like they won the World Cup when they got knocked out in the semi-finals on penalties by Germany. Last night's Lionesses of course showed great composure and won their big match on penalties. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Footballer's 14-month old son dies after short illness as club cancel pre-season training camp

Serie B footballer Matthias Verreth has returned to his home country of Belgium following the tragic death of his one-year-old son. After suffering relegation from the Italian second tier with Brescia last season, Verreth signed a three-year deal with Bari earlier this month. The 27-year-old had began pre-season preparations with his new club when tragedy struck. On Sunday, Verreth's 14-month-old son Elliot Charles died following a short-illness. The child had reportedly been hospitalised days earlier after suffering with virus-like symptoms. Bari's pre-season training camp was subsequently cancelled and Verreth was driven to the airport by club president Luigi De Laurentiis to travel back to Belgium, where he joined his partner and their three-year-old daughter in mourning. In a statement on the club's website, Bari expressed their condolences. It read: 'We are speechless and deeply shocked. We express our deepest condolences to Matthias Verreth and his family in one of the most terrible moments one can experience. 'President Luigi De Laurentiis, the technical staff, the entire team, the management and the red and white collaborators stand with Matthias and his family in one of the most terrible moments that a parent and a human being can experience. 'We ask all the fans to join Matthias in spirit and emotion, to his wife, to their firstborn daughter and to all their loved ones in this time of terrible grief.' A Belgian youth international, Verreth began his playing career in the Netherlands as part of PSV's famed youth academy. After spending more than a decade at the Eindhoven club and making a single Eredivisie appearance for the first team, the winger departed in 2019 to join Belgian side Waasland-Beveren. In 2022 Verreth joined Dutch second-tier side Willem II and in his second season at the Koning Stadion helped lead the club back to the top flight as champions.

He was reportedly admitted to hospital with virus-like symptoms two days before his death. After hearing the news, the 27-year-old was driven to Fiumicino airport by Bari president Luigi De Laurentiis on Sunday afternoon. Verreth's wife Séli Muyabo was back home in Belgium with the couple's three-year-old daughter. Bari expressed their sympathies in a touching tribute on the club's website. It read: "We are speechless and deeply shocked. We express our deepest condolences to Matthias Verreth and his family in one of the most terrible moments one can experience. "We ask all the fans to join Matthias in spirit and emotion, to his wife, to their firstborn daughter and to all their loved ones in this time of terrible grief.' Verreth spent 12 years in PSV's youth academy and also played for club's reserves, making one appearance for the first team in 2018. He then made 30 appearances for Belgian side Waasland-Beveren, in-between a season-long loan move to Kolding. In 2022, the winger moved back to the Netherlands for two years, first joining FC Eindhoven on a six month loan before signing a two-year deal at Willem II. His first move to Italy came with Serie B side Brescia in 2024, before joining Bari on a three-year-deal this month.
