Footballer's 14-month old son dies after short illness as club cancel pre-season training camp

Daily Mail16 hours ago
Serie B footballer Matthias Verreth has returned to his home country of Belgium following the tragic death of his one-year-old son.
After suffering relegation from the Italian second tier with Brescia last season, Verreth signed a three-year deal with Bari earlier this month.
The 27-year-old had began pre-season preparations with his new club when tragedy struck.
On Sunday, Verreth's 14-month-old son Elliot Charles died following a short-illness.
The child had reportedly been hospitalised days earlier after suffering with virus-like symptoms.
Bari's pre-season training camp was subsequently cancelled and Verreth was driven to the airport by club president Luigi De Laurentiis to travel back to Belgium, where he joined his partner and their three-year-old daughter in mourning.
In a statement on the club's website, Bari expressed their condolences.
It read: 'We are speechless and deeply shocked. We express our deepest condolences to Matthias Verreth and his family in one of the most terrible moments one can experience.
'President Luigi De Laurentiis, the technical staff, the entire team, the management and the red and white collaborators stand with Matthias and his family in one of the most terrible moments that a parent and a human being can experience.
'We ask all the fans to join Matthias in spirit and emotion, to his wife, to their firstborn daughter and to all their loved ones in this time of terrible grief.'
A Belgian youth international, Verreth began his playing career in the Netherlands as part of PSV's famed youth academy.
After spending more than a decade at the Eindhoven club and making a single Eredivisie appearance for the first team, the winger departed in 2019 to join Belgian side Waasland-Beveren.
In 2022 Verreth joined Dutch second-tier side Willem II and in his second season at the Koning Stadion helped lead the club back to the top flight as champions.

Hannah Hampton reveals inspirational grandfather passed away two days before Euro 2025

England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton paid an emotional tribute to her late grandfather after revealing he passed away two days before the start of Euro 2025. Hampton was the hero of England's shootout victory over Spain in Sunday's final as she saved two penalties to set up Chloe Kelly to seal glory for the Lionesses. The 24-year-old started for England at the first time at a major tournament after replacing Mary Earps between the posts but was a revelation as the Lionesses defended their title. Hampton wore 'Grandma' printed on her England shirt during the tournament and she said he had been one of her biggest supporters on her journey. Hampton posted on Instagram: "Dear Grandpa. Two days before the biggest tournament of my life, you left. It still doesn't feel real. 'I kept thinking when I'd call nannie I'd hear your voice again - one of your jokes, or one of those little comments you'd make that somehow said everything without saying much at all. "You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like. "You were always there: watching, encouraging, teaching. You taught me so much, not just about football, but about life. About staying grounded, working hard, being resilient and doing things the right way. "I miss our chats. I miss you saying, 'only us athletes understand' - always with a little smirk like you were in on something special. And you were. You got it. You understood what this meant to me. You understood what it took. "It breaks my heart that you didn't get to see me walk out for our country at my first major tournament. "Something you dreamed of for me, something we talked about so many times. I wanted to see your face or hear your voice after the game calling back home. I wanted to share that with you. "But I know, deep down, you were still there. I felt you with me. In the tunnel. On the pitch. In the tough moments. I heard you in my head when I needed strength. I hope I made you proud, Grandpa. "I carried you through every minute, and I always will. I did it. We did it." England head coach Sarina Wiegman called for further investment in women's football to ensure the country remains a "trailblazer" as her side celebrated their Euro 2025 success at a "very, very special" reception at 10 Downing Street on Monday evening. A homecoming open-top bus parade follows in central London on Tuesday, where there will be a procession along The Mall and the celebration will finish with a staged ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. England's Euro 2025 final victory over Spain was watched by combined a peak TV audience of 16.2m across the BBC and ITV, making the Lionesses' win the most watched moment of 2025. Chloe Kelly scored the decisive penalty in the shootout against Spain as Hampton made two saves to secure back-to-back European titles for England. The final attracted an average TV audience of 12m across both BBC and ITV. The BBC said a peak audience of 12.2m watched England make history across its platforms, including a peak of 11.6m on BBC One - representing a 59 per cent share of all TV audiences on Sunday evening. It was the most-watched moment on TV this year, with ITV recording a peak of 4.2m viewers during the final. ITV attracted an audience of 10.2m for England's semi-final win over Italy, which was the channel's biggest audience for 2025. There was a peak audience of 17.4m when the Lionesses won the previous Euros in 2022, which saw England win a major men's or women's tournament for the first time since 1966 by beating Germany in extra time at Wembley.

Man City star Jack Grealish 'targeted by surprise Premier League rival' after falling out-of-favour under Pep Guardiola

Manchester City star Jack Grealish could be set for a switch to a Premier League rival, according to a report. Grealish's time with City looks set to come to an end this summer after he was left out of their 27-man Club World Cup squad last month. His omission followed a frustrating season in which he made just seven Premier League starts. Pep Guardiola has hinted that leaving City could be Grealish's best chance to revive his career and rediscover the form he showed at Aston Villa. And now, Everton are keen to take the 29-year-old on loan ahead of entering a new era at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, according to the Independent. The Toffees' chances of landing the forward are believed to be boosted by his desire to remain in the north. Grealish became a father last September following the birth of his daughter with long-term partner Sasha Attwood, and is now seeking greater stability. A move to Everton would allow him to stay in Cheshire while offering a fresh footballing opportunity, despite having two years left on his £300,000-a-week deal at the Etihad. David Moyes is prepared to build his team around Grealish and offer him the creative freedom he's lacked since his £100m move to City in 2021. The England international has scored 17 goals and registered 23 assists in 157 appearances for City, and played a key role in their treble-winning season. Earlier this month, Grealish was spotted at Oasis' concert in Manchester and said: 'You know what? I love City more than anything,' the England international told a fan. 'And do you know what I love more than anything? City fans. They're the best fans in the world.' Asked about Grealish's omission from the Club World Cup earlier this summer, City boss Guardiola said: 'He had a conversation with the club and they decided it was best. 'Jack is an exceptional player. The only reason why he didn't play last season is of course my decisions. 'We decide that he has to play. The club was honest, he was honest. 'We decide that the best thing is to stay (behind) and have a place that he can feel like he can come back to be the player like he was in the year of the Treble or all his career in Aston Villa. 'Without him it would have been more difficult in the year of the Treble. 'The fact is in the last two seasons he didn't play much minutes. He has to come back to play and have the butterflies in his stomach that he can play every three days, every three days and show again the quality he has.'
