Thieves steal cellphones from waiting passengers at CTA Sox–35th station, police warns

Chicago police are warning riders to be aware of their surroundings after two reported cellphone thefts at a CTA station on the city's South Side
The robberies happened last month at the Sox-35th Red Line station in the Armour Square neighborhood.
Police said on June 24 and 25, during the 11 a.m. hour, two suspects approached the victims and took their cellphones from their hands as they were waiting for the train to arrive.
Police released photos of the alleged suspects, who are described as Black men. One wore a dark Chicago Bulls hooded sweater and blue jeans, and the other wore a black knit hat and a white T-shirt.
Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to contact Public Transportation Detectives at 312-745-4447 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com, using reference numbers JJ307247 and JJ308247.

The Chevy driver, a 37-year-old woman, and the passenger, a 35-year-old woman, refused medical treatment at the scene. Citations are pending. Investigation into the crash remains ongoing by the Major Accidents Investigation Unit.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 57 are closed after a person was fatally hit by a vehicle early Sunday morning in the south suburbs. The crash happened shortly after 4 a.m. near Vollmer Road in Country Club Hills. A preliminary investigation by Illinois State Police indicated a crash occurred, and an occupant from one of the vehicles exited their car and was struck by a passing vehicle. One person was pronounced dead. The identity of the victim was not released. Another person was taken to an area hospital. I-57 southbound is closed at I-80. The I-80 ramp to I-57 southbound is also closed. Investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

An Illinois landlord convicted of fatally stabbing a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy and severely wounding his mother in a hate crime has died in custody, just months after he was sentenced to 53 years in prison. Joseph Czuba was convicted in February of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and two counts of a hate crime for the October 2023 attack that sent shock waves through the nation. It took place just a week after Hamas's deadly Oct. 7 attack into Israel.
