PENAMPANG: History was made when the first Unduk Ngadau, the late Yong Mee Lan, was honoured with a commemorative stamp, an esteemed recognition now available at post offices across Sabah. The tribute, celebrating her contribution as the first native Sino-Kadazan Unduk Ngadau, marked 65 years since she paved the way for generations of harvest queens. It also highlighted another historical milestone for Sabah, as the Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant remained the longest-running competition in Malaysia since its inception in 1960. Hulk Hogan, icon in professional wrestling, dies at age 71
Published on: Friday, July 25, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 25, 2025 By: AP Text Size: FLORIDA: Hulk Hogan, a mustachioed, headscarf-wearing icon in professional wrestling who turned the sport into a massive business and cultural touchstone, died Thursday at 71, Florida police said. Hogan was pronounced dead at a hospital after authorities in Clearwater responded to a morning call about a cardiac arrest, police said. 'There were no signs of foul play or suspicious activity,' Maj. Nate Burnside told reporters. Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, was perhaps the biggest star in WWE's long history. He was the main draw for the first WrestleMania in 1985 and was a fixture for years, facing everyone from Andre The Giant and Randy Savage to The Rock and even company chairman Vince McMahon. He won at least six WWE championships and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. 'One of pop culture's most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan's family, friends, and fans,' WWE said. 'Hulkamania,' as the energy he created was called, started running wild in the mid-1980s and pushed professional wrestling into the mainstream. He was a flag-waving American hero with the horseshoe mustache, red and yellow gear and massive arms he called his '24-inch pythons.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah to boost creative sector as new economic driver
Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 Text Size: Nizam and Fahmi with the fund recipients and others. - Pic by CMD KOTA KINABALU: The State Government is committed to strengthening Sabah's creative industry as a new economic driver and a platform to share Borneo's cultural narratives nationally and abroad. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan focuses on building a digital and knowledge-based economy, including creative content. He noted that efforts are underway to upgrade creative facilities and support training centres and content incubators in Keningau, Sandakan, and here in collaboration with federal agencies such as the National Film Development Corporation (Finas). Speaking at the Creative Content Fund (DKK) acceptance letter handover ceremony on Tuesday, Hajiji said the fund plays a vital role in helping local creators produce Sabah-identity content that highlights folklore, history, and indigenous languages. His speech was delivered by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, here. Hajiji said the DKK provides opportunities for Sabahans to tell their stories through films, documentaries, and television programmes, making use of the state's rich cultural diversity and natural beauty. He also praised young Sabahan talents for gaining recognition through platforms such as the Sabah Film Lab, Mini Film Fest, and Kota Kinabalu International Film Festival, and encouraged more youth, especially from rural areas, to explore creative storytelling. Also present was Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
