Gold hits record, dollar drops as tariff fears dampen sentiment

Iraqi News21-04-2025
Hong Kong – Gold prices hit a fresh record Monday while the dollar weakened further and stocks were mixed amid worries about Donald Trump's tariff blitz and bubbling row with the Federal Reserve.
With several markets still closed for the Easter holiday, business was limited ahead of a week that will see the release of key data that should give an insight into the impact of the US president's trade war.
Several nations have moved to cut a deal with Washington to stem the worst of the White House's levies, with Japan the highest profile economy.
However, China warned governments on Monday not to seek an agreement that compromised Beijing's interests.
While the rest of the world has been slapped with a blanket 10 percent tariff, China faces levies of up to 145 percent on many products. Beijing has responded with duties of 125 percent on US goods.
'Appeasement will not bring peace, and compromise will not be respected,' a commerce ministry spokesperson said in a statement.
'To seek one's own temporary selfish interests at the expense of others' interests is to seek the skin of a tiger,' Beijing said.
That approach, it warned, 'will ultimately fail on both ends and harm others'.
The remarks come after Trump said Thursday that the United States was in talks with China on tariffs, adding that he was confident the world's largest economies could make a deal to end the bitter trade war.
'Yeah, we're talking to China,' he said. 'I would say they have reached out a number of times.'
'I think we're going to make a very good deal with China.'
Concerns about the global economic outlook pushed safe haven assets higher, with gold hitting a new record high above $3,384.
The precious metal was also helped by a weaker dollar, which has also been hit by worries about Trump's standoff with Fed boss Jerome Powell.
The president raised worries about the bank's independence when he last week lashed Powell for warning that the tariffs were 'highly likely to generate at least a temporary rise in inflation' and suggested interest rate cuts were unlikely.
Trump later called on him to slash borrowing costs and added: 'If I want him out, he'll be out of there real fast, believe me.'
Powell has said he had no plans to step down early, adding that he considered the bank's independence over monetary policy to be a 'matter of law'.
The dollar fell against its main peers, with the yen and euro among the best performers.
French Finance Minister Eric Lombard said: 'Donald Trump has hurt the credibility of the dollar with his aggressive moves on tariffs — for a long time.'
If Powell is pushed out 'this credibility will be harmed even more, with developments in the bond market', he told La Tribune Dimanche newspaper.
Chicago Fed boss Austan Goolsbee on Sunday told CBS's Face The Nation: 'There's virtual unanimity among economists that monetary independence from political interference — that the Fed or any central bank be able to do the job that it needs to do — is really important.'
Stocks had a mixed start to the week, with Tokyo weighed by the stronger yen and Taipei also in negative territory. But Shanghai, Seoul, Singapore, Manila and Jakarta rose.
Oil prices dropped on demand fears as worries about the global economy swirl.
Traders are keeping tabs on the release of key April manufacturing data around the world this week, hoping for an idea about the early impact of Trump's tariffs.
'One thing that's absolutely clear — and no longer debatable — is that the reputational hit to the US brand is real, and it's not fading quietly into the next news cycle,' said Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management.
'It's sticking. Investors, allies, and even central banks are starting to bake in the idea that American policymaking, both fiscal and monetary, is now a geopolitical variable — not a given,' he added.

France's Sanofi helps Iraq develop pharmaceutical industry

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Health mentioned on Sunday that the agreement with Sanofi, a French pharmaceutical and healthcare company, represents an essential step toward strengthening Iraq's pharmaceutical industry. During his participation in a scientific workshop on biosimilar medicines and intellectual property, Deputy Health Minister Hani al-Oqabi explained that the agreement reached with Sanofi is not limited to the pharmaceutical industry but includes other important areas, according to the state-run news agency (INA). Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has lately been focusing on developing collaboration with international enterprises and seeking investments to build industries in Iraq, according to al-Oqabi. The prime minister's advisor on industry and private sector development, Hammoudi al-Lami, revealed earlier that AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company based in Cambridge, is thinking of building a pharmaceutical facility in Iraq. In a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), al-Lami explained that Arab and foreign companies are eager to set up businesses in the Iraqi market. The Iraqi official indicated that the US multinational healthcare company Baxter, as well as businesses in the Gulf States, had also expressed a desire to become part of the Iraqi market. The Iraqi Ministry of Health revealed in late April that it signed an agreement with European companies to establish an insulin production plant in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh. According to INA, the agreement was signed with a Polish firm, one of the top four producers of insulin worldwide, and a German corporation. The idea to produce insulin in Iraq that meets all European requirements was sparked by the Iraqi government's support for pharmaceutical and health industry initiatives. The steps align with the objectives outlined in the Iraqi government's agenda, which emphasizes the development of the country's health sector.

Construction Starts at 1,000 MW Solar Power Project in Basra

By John Lee. The Iraqi Prime Minister has laid the foundation stone for the Shams Al-Basra solar power station, a landmark renewable energy project in Basra with a total generation capacity of 1,000 megawatts. Speaking at the inauguration, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani highlighted the strategic importance of the project in supporting Iraq's power generation capacity and advancing the country's clean energy goals. He pledged full government support to ensure its timely completion. The solar project forms part of a broader agreement between Iraq's Ministry of Oil and French energy giant TotalEnergies. It will be built over 9,000 dunams [900 hectares; 2,224 acres] of land and comprise 2 million solar panels divided into four units, each generating 250 MW. The facility will also include: A 132 kV transmission network spanning 180 km; A newly built 132 kV substation; Upgrades to two existing ministry-owned secondary substations. The first 250 MW unit is scheduled to come online by the end of this year. Under the contract, TotalEnergies will operate and maintain the plant for 25 years. The project is expected to deliver environmental benefits by reducing air pollution, lowering reliance on fossil fuels, and cutting carbon emissions. It will supply power to three secondary substations across the region. (Source: PMO)

Asian markets turn lower as trade war rally fades

Hong Kong – Asian stocks fell Friday as their latest rally ran out of legs, with sentiment weighed by strong US jobs data that saw investors row back their expectations for interest rate cuts. With Japan's trade deal with Washington out of the way for now, attention was also turning to European Union attempts to reach an agreement to pare down Donald Trump's threatened tariffs before next Friday's deadline. Equities have enjoyed a strong run-up for much of July on expectations governments will hammer out pacts, pushing some markets past or close to record highs. However, while Wall Street hit new records Thursday — S&P 500 chalked up its 10th in 19 sessions — another round of strong jobs data suggested the Federal Reserve might have to wait longer than hoped to cut borrowing costs. The 217,000 initial claims for unemployment benefits in the week to July 19 was the lowest since mid-April and suggested the labour market remains tight. The figures followed forecast-topping non-farm payrolls in June and come as inflation shows signs of picking up as Trump's tariffs begin to bite. Traders are now betting on 42 basis points of rate cuts by the end of the year, according to Bloomberg News. That's down from more than 50 previously. Meanwhile, a manufacturing survey showed US business confidence deteriorated in July for the second successive month, with companies worried about tariffs and cuts to federal spending. Trump continued to press Fed chief Jerome Powell to slash interest rates during a visit to its headquarters on Thursday, where they bickered over its renovation cost. The president, who wants to oust Powell over his refusal to cut, took a fresh dig during the trip, telling reporters: 'As good as we're doing, we'd do better if we had lower interest rates.' Trump's anger at the Fed and his calls for officials to lower rates has raised concerns about the independence of the central bank. 'While unlikely to yield anything concrete, the optics of a president storming the temple of monetary orthodoxy is enough to put Powell watchers on edge,' said SPI Asset Management's Stephen Innes. 'The risk isn't immediate policy change — it's longer-term erosion of independence, and the signal that Powell may not be sitting as comfortably as markets assume.' Trade hopes remain elevated, with Brussels and Washington appearing close to a deal that would halve Trump's threatened 30 percent levy, with a European Commission spokesman saying he believed an agreement was 'within reach'. The bloc, however, is still forging ahead with contingency plans in case talks fail, with member states approving a 93-billion-euro ($109-billion) package of counter-tariffs. With few positive catalysts to drive buying, Asian markets turned lower heading into the weekend. Tokyo dipped after putting on around five percent in the previous two days, while Hong Kong retreated following five days of gains. There were also losses in Shanghai, Sydney, Singapore, Manila and Jakarta. Seoul and Wellington edged up. The dollar extended gains against its peers as investors pared their rate forecasts. – Key figures at around 0230 GMT – Tokyo – Nikkei 225: DOWN 0.6 percent at 41,570.24 (break) Hong Kong – Hang Seng Index: DOWN 0.7 percent at 25,487.95 Shanghai – Composite: DOWN 0.2 percent at 3,597.77 Dollar/yen: UP at 147.40 yen from 146.94 yen on Thursday Euro/dollar: DOWN at $1.1742 from $1.1756 Pound/dollar: DOWN at $1.3498 from $1.3507 Euro/pound: DOWN at 86.99 pence from 87.01 pence West Texas Intermediate: UP 0.6 percent at $66.43 per barrel Brent North Sea Crude: UP 0.6 percent at $69.61 per barrel New York – Dow: DOWN 0.7 percent at 44,693.91 (close) London – FTSE 100: UP 0.9 percent at 9,138.37 (close)
