Ex-Red Sox Executive Breaks Silence on 'Bold' Trade of $313 Million Superstar

Ex-Red Sox Executive Breaks Silence on 'Bold' Trade of $313 Million Superstar

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
The Chicago Cubs have seized a top spot in the National League and are preparing to fortify their roster ahead of a push for the World Series.
But the front office is no stranger to the other side of things, having been a stark deadline seller in recent years in attempts to rebuild after winning the World Series. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer reflected on that recent history by highlighting the role of his former colleague Craig Breslow, who is now the chief baseball officer of the Boston Red Sox.
"He was a big part of the decision to trade away our core World Series guys," Hoyer explained, per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. "It was time to reset and bring in new talent and put the organization in a different direction. He saw that as the right thing to do at the time."
Apparently, that lesson stuck with Breslow. As the Red Sox publicly butted heads with franchise slugger Rafael Devers earlier this season, Breslow opted to trade him away to the San Francisco Giants.

Now, Hoyer has shared his reaction to the most shocking trade in recent Major League Baseball memory by praising Breslow's willingness to make it.
"He's been bold with the (Garrett) Crochet deal, and obviously with the Devers deal, I loved the conviction he showed on that deal," Hoyer said, according to McCaffrey. "When I see other executives make decisions like that, I have so much respect because I know what goes into it from a personal standpoint."
Though Red Sox fans might have been disappointed by the move, Hoyer is in a better position than most to understand the potential benefits of trading away a player in the midst of a $313 million contract like Devers. He is one of a number of ex-Red Sox executives who have gone on to run front offices of their own, including Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington. The Cubs have been embroiled in a four-year playoff drought since making their own sales, but those decisions seem to be paying off this season.
As the Cubs look to transition their strong start into a deep playoff run, fans won't need to worry about Hoyer offloading any superstars this time around. But his praise for the Devers deal should be a reminder that tough roster decisions are never too far away.

A look at where FIU is expected to finish in conference in Willie Simmons' first season

Lindy's magazine predicts FIU will finish in last place this year in Conference USA's 12-team football standings. Athlon is a bit kinder to FIU, picking the Panthers ninth. Willie Simmons, FIU's new coach, doesn't agree with either prognostication. 'I think we're going to surprise people this year,' Simmons said on Tuesday at C-USA's Media Day in Frisco, Texas. The outside pessimism regarding FIU is understandable considering the fact that the Panthers have suffered through five straight losing seasons. Over the past four years, the Panthers are 9-32 overall and 3-24 in league play. In addition, FIU lost most of its top players from last season, including wide receivers Eric Rivers and Dean Patterson, who both transferred to Georgia Tech after combining for 112 catches in 2024. In fact, only four FIU starters return from last season: quarterback Keyone Jenkins; left guard Jaheim Buchanon; defensive end Keegan Davis; and cornerback Brian Blades II. Lindy's magazine doesn't have any FIU player listed as a preseason first-team All-C-USA selection. Jenkins, Buchanon and punter Trey Wilhoit are on the second team. In addition, Jenkins is named as the 'best scrambler' in the league. Athlon's – again – holds FIU in a bit higher regard. For example, Buchanon, Blades and kick returner C'Quan Jnopierre made their first-team list. Also, ex-Miami Edison and current FIU running back Sterling Joseph was named as the league's eighth-best freshman recruit. FIU's recruiting class overall was ranked fifth in the conference. Meanwhile, with FIU's players set to report on Monday and its first fall practice of the year scheduled for July 31, Simmons used the word 'excited' or 'exciting' four times in his first 20 seconds on the Media Day stage in Frisco. 'We've had an amazing seven-plus months with these guys, building the roster and putting the coaching staff together,' Simmons said. 'We're excited to get to work next week.' Simmons also admitted that FIU's resources aren't the biggest. But he's not fazed by what FIU may lack. 'Being at low-resource institutions before, you learn the value of efficiency and how to maximize your time,' Simmons said. 'We don't have unlimited resources. That means everyone doing extra work, being unselfish, and that's a quality that breeds success. 'Whether it was at Prairie View, FAMU, even Duke last year or now at FIU – when you don't have the most, you have to make the most of what you do have.'

Yankees Pushed to Cut Ties With Spencer Jones in Puzzling Deadline Move

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees are reportedly looking for a third baseman at the trade deadline, but they also need pitching help. The ideal fit for the Yankees at third base might be Eugenio Suárez, but he may not be cheap. The Yankees' farm system has players that could intrigue the Arizona Diamondbacks, or any team the Yankees are trying to trade with. However, the question will be which prospects the team is willing to give up. FanSided's Stephen Parello surprisingly urged the Yankees to trade away Spencer Jones to acquire a player who can help them win the World Series this year. Jones has been playing great since being called up to Triple-A, and has the potential to be a superstar. TAMPA, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 28: Spencer Jones #78 of the New York Yankees takes the field for the first inning during a spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays at George M. Steinbrenner Field... TAMPA, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 28: Spencer Jones #78 of the New York Yankees takes the field for the first inning during a spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on February 28, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. MoreJones is slashing .408/.470/.901 with 10 home runs in 17 games in Triple-A. He has seemingly figured things out at the plate, but Parello noted one concern that should have the Yankees ready to sell high on Jones. "There's one huge red flag, however: the swing-and-miss," wrote Parello. "With Somerset, Jones was going down on strikes 33.7% of the time. In his short stint in Scranton, that number has come down a hair, but still resides at an unacceptable 29.4%. Big league pitchers will feast on a hitter with that many holes in his swing, so until Jones can figure that out (which is questionable), his tremendous gifts are likely neutralized in the bigs, regardless of his current hot streak." Jones is the Yankees' No. 3 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He was the No. 84 prospect in all of baseball last year. If the Yankees think that his hot streak is nothing more than just that, then trading him for a bat like Suárez in a potential deal that includes Merrill Kelly or Zac Gallen would be wise.
