The UAE's Emirates ID might be changing soon – here's how

Time Out Dubai03-06-2025

That little Emirates ID card you carry around in your wallet? It might be on its way out – or at least, headed for a serious digital upgrade.
Known for being one step above the rest, the UAE has futuristic plans to phase out the need to physically present your Emirates ID when accessing key services.
Instead, biometric tech like facial recognition and digital verification through your phone will do all the work.
The new system – spearheaded by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) – is expected to roll out within the next year. And it could be a game-changer for everything from hospital visits to hotel check-ins.
The new e-Emirates ID system
Currently, despite all the tech advances in the UAE, you still need to flash your original Emirates ID card to do quite a few things – like open a bank account, check into a hotel, or access healthcare. But not for long.
Enter: the upgraded e-Emirates ID system.
How will it work?
The ICP is expanding the use of digital Emirates IDs via the UAEPASS app – a government-backed platform that already allows users to request digital versions of official documents. The next step? Making facial recognition and biometric authentication the norm.
Instead of handing over a card, you'll soon be able to verify your identity just by looking at a screen. The plan is to integrate this across a wide range of sectors – think banking, healthcare, telecoms and hospitality.

Wait, haven't we seen this before?
Sort of. The UAE introduced facial recognition services through the UAEPASS app back in 2021, during GITEX. Since then, the tech has slowly been rolled out across select services. But now, the ICP wants to take things further, encouraging partners across industries to adopt the new system and make it universal.
Minister of State for FNC Affairs, Abdul Rahman Al Owais, confirmed that e-Emirates IDs are already in use for several services. The focus now is on speeding up adoption, ironing out challenges and expanding digital identity use across all key sectors.
What about privacy?
Naturally, when biometric data is involved, people want to know how their information is being protected. The ICP says it's following strict laws and data protection standards to ensure trust and security for all users.
So while you may be trading your card for a camera scan, your personal data should still be safe and sound.
This could be the beginning of the end for physical Emirates IDs – at least when it comes to using them for everyday services. The transition won't happen overnight, but it's well underway.
So, if you haven't downloaded the UAEPASS app yet, now might be a good time.

Report: Trump's new searchable 'national citizenship system'

The Trump administration has quietly assembled a new searchable database of U.S. citizens. The program is designed help state election officials cross-check voter registrants across the country to ensure only U.S. citizens are able to cast ballots. It's an initiative that follows Elon Musk's DOGE efforts to gain access to Social Security Administration and other agency data. And it's likely to be opposed by Democrats and also others concerned that American voters' data could be breached or compromised. The administration speedily constructed the system in just a matter of months after Trump issued an executive order directing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to create a system to ensure only citizens vote in elections. State officials should 'access to appropriate systems for verifying the citizenship or immigration status of individuals registering to vote,' the order states. It goes on to say that they should gain access without having to pay a fee. A detailed report on the new system by National Public Radio calls it a 'sea change' in existing policy to provide a roster of U.S. citizens, and a previously 'third rail' policy move that the nation has eschewed in the past. Experts questioned the accuracy of a system assembled so quickly with little public notice, and warn about the impact on voter registration depending on how it is used and maintained. One, University of Virginia School of Law professor Danielle Citron, called the effort to aggregate the massive trove of data a 'hair on fire' moment. The move comes as President Donald Trump has made repeated references to illegal immigrants voting, although detailed looks at the issue have found it to be exceedingly rare. An audit of Georgia's 8.2 million voter roles found 20 noncitizens registered to vote, with 9 actually casting a ballot. A look at Iowa's 2.3 million rolls found 87 times when individuals cast a ballot and then later self-reported they were non-citizens. Trump has long described a deliberate Democratic conspiracy to try to get illegal immigrants to vote, as he did in the ABC presidential debate. 'And a lot of these illegal immigrants coming in, they're trying to get them to vote. They can't even speak English, they don't know even know what country they're in practically, and these people are trying to get them to vote, and that's why they're allowing them to come into our country,' Trump said. It was not immediately clear which states planned to use the new database. Details of the database come after the Supreme Court issued a bombshell ruling on Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship , provoking angry arguments from dueling justices. DOGE's moves to gain access to sensitive data drew litigation, but the Supreme Court in June ruled it could have access to agency data. Trump has repeatedly called the 2020 election rigged despite losing by more than 7 million votes to Joe Biden. He did so again Friday in the Oval Office in response to a softball question when he said: 'That election was rigged and stolen, and we can't allow that to happen.' The new effort expands on the existing Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements to check on the status of legal residents. But election officials who also sometimes used it complained it was unwieldy. A May announcement by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services stated that the system had been updated 'to ensure a single, reliable source for verifying immigration status and U.S. citizenship nationwide. State and local authorities can input Social Security numbers to help verify U.S. citizenship and prevent aliens from voting in American elections. The 1993 National Voter Registration Act, known as the motor voter law, prohibited states from requiring proof of citizenship, amid fears that it would disenfranchise voters who couldn't locate a passport or Social Security card. Instead, voter registration applications allow voters to attest to their citizenship, although states can comb rolls to try to ferret out people who shouldn't be on them. There have since been legislative efforts to try to add such a requirement prior to Trump's order on 'Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.' The Daily Mail has reached out to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for comment.

Genesis plans hybrid onslaught in ongoing quest to beat BMW and Mercedes

Genesis – the luxury arm of Hyundai – will launch a series of hybrids designed to bolster its position in the premium new-car market. It will allow the maker to launch all-new, multi-fuel models, as well as reintroduce cars that have been killed off by increasingly stringent emissions regulations. While the maker hasn't officially confirmed which models are in line for hybrid drive, UK brand director Jonny Miller told us the company would not retrofit petrol engines to dedicated EVs that currently sit on the E-GMP platform – 'of which we have one, in our range', he said. This rules out the GV60, but leaves the newly-facelifted GV70 SUV and G80 saloon as possible candidates for this new range of electrically-assisted combustion engines. Advertisement - Article continues below It's not clear what form the hybrid tech will take, but the brand's positioning in the market and Miller's comments about how any implementation would have to 'aid performance', would suggest a plug-in (PHEV) setup is likely. The UK boss refused to write anything off, however, insisting 'if [Genesis has] the technology within the [Hyundai] Group' that anything is possible. Miller hinted that as a collective, Hyundai and Genesis were also working on a range-extender (REx) setup, with the tech proving particularly popular in Asian markets. Volkswagen has recently hinted at plans to bring REx models to Europe, potentially allowing ageing ICE cars – models that would otherwise be axed due to emissions legislation – a stay of execution. Miller also said the move could allow Genesis to 'bring back models that were previously offered with a petrol engine' – cars such as the GV80, and possibly even the G70 and G70 Shooting Brake. It may also present the maker with an opportunity to finally sell the GV80 Coupe here; UK buyers have so far been denied the BMW X6 rival due to limited powertrain choice, and the manufacturer's need to meet ZEV Mandate targets. We could see the first hybrid-powered Genesis variants as soon as this year, alongside the first of the firm's hot Magma cars, based on Hyundai's N and Kia's flagship GT models. Miller said Magma will be the 'pinnacle of the range' and 'only available with that top spec, top engine'. Fancy a Genesis on your driveway? One of the world's best airlines reveals plans to launch ‘game-changer' new economy seats

ONE of the best airlines in the world has revealed plans to upgrade their economy seats to be some of the best in the industry. Emirates was named as the fourth best airline in the world by this year's Skytrax Awards, dubbed the "Oscars of Aviation". 3 Emirates is planning to make its economy seats even better Credit: Alamy It also won the Best Premium Economy Class Airline seat. as well as named the best family-friendly airline in the Middle East. And while it's First Class was also named best in the Middle East, the airline is about to make economy travel even better. Emirates has said it is rolling out a "game-changer" new economy seat. The airline's president Sir Tim Clark told Executive Traveller: "If you've got people sitting in a very tight cabin for 16-17 hours, we've got to do better than we're doing at the moment." He previously said: "We did a lot of work in the Nineties, reshaping the seat, redesigning the ergonomics, the architecture of the seat, and everything else made them much more comfortable. 'But after that we stopped. We concentrated on the premium products.' But rather than make seats wider, they could work on making them taller instead. He explained: "If you put four or five inches on the height of the seats, what could you play with if you did that? "I've been told the cabin crew can't see to the back, but (planes) have cameras everywhere now. The A380 is full of cameras.' An upgraded economy cabin for Emirates is still in the pipeline, with no confirmed images or rollout date. Inside Emirates premium economy cabin The Sun's Head of Travel Lisa Minot recently flew in economy with Emirates. She explained: "Even in economy it's easy to see how Emirates is in a different league to other long haul airlines. "Launching their first London flights back in 1991, the next year they were the first ever airline to install in flight entertainment screens in all seats across every class. "And as the first airline to order the game-changing Airbus A380 and I was among the first to travel on the two-deck leviathan capable of holding up to 615 passengers. 3 The airline could make the seats even taller rather than wider Credit: Alamy "The inflight catering always feels generous compared to other airlines and while the seats may not be any more generous than our flag-carrier, the plush padding make it much more comfortable over a long flight. "And unlike the service I've received on some American airlines over the years, the Emirates crew have been faultless on every trip I've been on." Or if you fancy a splurge, the Sun's Assistant Travel Editor Sophie Swietochowski recently tried out Emirate's business class. She explained: "The lavish experience begins before you even step foot in the airport with a free 'chauffeur' service. "If you're travelling solo, you can opt for a window seat which comes in single rows while couples can opt for the duo seats in the middle. "While the amount of personal space was the main benefit of flying upper, the reclining seat turning into flat bed meant I managed to get some proper kip on a long-haul flight."
