SCCC, Guizhou explore potential for collaboration

Kota Kinabalu: The potential for collaboration between natural resource laden Sabah and Guizhou is vast, particularly in areas such as resource integration, industry synergy, technological complementarity, and talent exchange. This promising outlook was the focus of discussions during a grand dinner reception hosted by the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) to welcome a visiting delegation from Guizhou Province, China recently. The delegation was led by Liu Baochang, Deputy Director of the Guizhou Foreign Affairs Office. Both sides reached a mutual agreement to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade and culture, thereby laying a solid foundation for future partnerships. In his welcoming speech, Datuk Frankie Liew, President of the SCCC, highlighted the event as a celebration of the treasured and respectful friendship between Sabah and Guizhou. To commemorate the occasion, the Chamber invited several honorary advisors to join the dinner and engage in meaningful dialogue. Among these distinguished guests were Tan Sri T.C. Goh and his spouse, Prof. Dato Sri Wilson Yong Tung Yung, Datuk Aloysius Tan, and Prof. Datuk Foo NK. The Guizhou delegation comprised senior officials and business representatives, including Guo Bi, Director of the Liaison Department at the Guizhou Federation of Industry and Commerce; Xu Yuan Qiu, Senior Officer of the Coordination Division at the Guizhou Foreign Affairs Office; Zhang Hai, Senior Officer from the Department of Open Economy Development at the Guizhou Department of Commerce; as well as Li Yu Shan and Guo Yu Tong from Duobei Ancient Tea Development Co., Ltd. Throughout the evening, both SCCC representatives and the Guizhou delegation engaged in in-depth discussions focused on their respective industrial strengths, cooperation opportunities, and future exchange directions. They recognized Sabah as a key gateway in East Malaysia endowed with rich natural resources and unique geographical advantages, while Guizhou demonstrated strong capabilities in sectors such as big data, eco-agriculture, and cultural tourism. Notable SCCC members present included Brett Chua, Datuk Jonathan Koh JP, Datuk Simon Teoh, Chiew Heng Hock, Tan Siew Ling, and others, all contributing to a vibrant atmosphere of collaboration. Datuk Frankie Liew emphasized that the meeting strengthened mutual understanding and trust, while also establishing a strong foundation for high-level and broad-based collaboration moving forward. Such missteps he said have eroded public trust. Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said while it does not support 'topple Anwar' movement, the Unity government must shoulder blame for failure to meet public expectations, leading to growing dissatisfaction. 'Anwar (Prime Minister) must demonstrate a firm commitment to practical reforms, rather than resorting to excessive 'performative politics' to please the public,' Vice President David Ong said in a statement. David said over the past year, Anwar's government has faced widespread criticism for controversies such as the delayed appointment of the Chief Justice. Such missteps he said have eroded public trust. 'The core responsibility of a leader is to resolve livelihood issues, not to create unnecessary political spectacles.' Regarding calls for Anwar to step down, David said it must be pursued through legitimate democratic mechanisms. 'Former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir remarked that a prime minister stepping down after losing public trust is a normal occurrence. 'However, we in LDP emphasise that Malaysia's 16th General Election is due by Feb 2028, it is better to let the people make their final judgment at the ballot box. 'We (LDP) criticise the Unity government's weak handling of economic and cost-of-living issues, noting that increased taxation, rising prices and stagnant wages have placed heavy burden on the people,' he said. David said Anwar had made repeated campaign promises to reduce fuel prices, review highway tolls and deliver justice in the Teoh Beng Hock case, but there has been little visible progress, leaving voters disappointed. He said since taking office, Anwar has shown 'more theatrics than tangible results.' 'The nation urgently needs structural reforms and pragmatic economic policies, rather than political shows and empty slogans,' he said.
