Anwar partly to blame for public anger: LDP

Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said while it does not support 'topple Anwar' movement, the Unity government must shoulder blame for failure to meet public expectations, leading to growing dissatisfaction. 'Anwar (Prime Minister) must demonstrate a firm commitment to practical reforms, rather than resorting to excessive 'performative politics' to please the public,' Vice President David Ong said in a statement. David said over the past year, Anwar's government has faced widespread criticism for controversies such as the delayed appointment of the Chief Justice. Such missteps he said have eroded public trust. 'The core responsibility of a leader is to resolve livelihood issues, not to create unnecessary political spectacles.' Regarding calls for Anwar to step down, David said it must be pursued through legitimate democratic mechanisms. 'Former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir remarked that a prime minister stepping down after losing public trust is a normal occurrence. 'However, we in LDP emphasise that Malaysia's 16th General Election is due by Feb 2028, it is better to let the people make their final judgment at the ballot box. 'We (LDP) criticise the Unity government's weak handling of economic and cost-of-living issues, noting that increased taxation, rising prices and stagnant wages have placed heavy burden on the people,' he said. David said Anwar had made repeated campaign promises to reduce fuel prices, review highway tolls and deliver justice in the Teoh Beng Hock case, but there has been little visible progress, leaving voters disappointed. He said since taking office, Anwar has shown 'more theatrics than tangible results.' 'The nation urgently needs structural reforms and pragmatic economic policies, rather than political shows and empty slogans,' he said. 'In the first season of 2025, Kampung Jawi-Jawi recorded a 21pc yield increase, rising from 3.79 MT/Ha to 4.59 MT/Ha and this directly improved farmer income and strengthened Sabah's domestic rice production. 'Now expanded to 10 locations across Kota Belud, the programme engages over 80 active farmers, combining modern practices, training, financial support and mechanisation to transform traditional farming and uplift rural livelihoods. 'As the government's strategic partner in food security, Bernas is not just managing rice imports but also helping transform the local paddy industry through innovation, investment, and close engagement with farming communities,' he said. 'Food security begins with awareness. When people understand what goes into producing a bowl of rice, they will value it more and that creates national resilience.' Visitors to the Bernas booth can look forward to a variety of fun and engaging activities for all ages, including a unique Rice Sensory Experience that highlights the beauty and diversity of Malaysian rice varieties, and a 'Guess the Weight of Rice' contest, where two lucky winners will receive a year's supply of rice. Trump orders nuclear submarine deployment in standoff with Russia
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines Friday in an extraordinary escalation of what had been an online war of words with a Russian official over Ukraine and tariffs. Trump and Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia's security council, have been sparring on social media for days. Trump's post on his Truth Social platform abruptly took that spat into the very real – and rarely publicised – sphere of nuclear forces. "Based on the highly provocative statements," Trump said he had "ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that." "Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances," the 79-year-old Republican posted. The nuclear sabre rattling came against the backdrop of a deadline set by Trump for the end of next week for Russia to take steps to ending the Ukraine war or face unspecified new sanctions. Despite the pressure from Washington, Russia's onslaught against its pro-Western neighbor continues to unfold at full-bore. An AFP analysis Friday showed that Russian forces had fired a record number of drones at Ukraine in July. Russian attacks have killed hundreds of Ukrainian civilians since June. A combined missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early Thursday killed 31 people, including five children, said rescuers. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire, said Friday that he wants peace but that his demands for ending his nearly three-and-a-half year invasion were "unchanged." Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join Nato. Trump did not say in his post whether he meant nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed submarines. He also did not elaborate on the deployment locations, which are kept secret by the US military. The United States and Russia control the vast majority of the world's nuclear weaponry, and Washington keeps nuclear-armed submarines on permanent patrol as part of its so-called nuclear triad of land, sea and air-launched weapons. Trump also did not refer specifically to what Medvedev had said to prompt his order. Medvedev had criticised Trump on his Telegram account Thursday and alluded to the "fabled 'Dead Hand'" – a reference to a highly secret automated system put in place during the Cold War to control the country's nuclear weapons. This came after Trump had lashed out at what he called the "dead economies" of Russia and India. Medvedev had also harshly criticized Trump's threat of new sanctions against Russia over Moscow's continuing invasion of Ukraine. Accusing Trump of "playing the ultimatum game," he posted Monday on X that Trump "should remember" that Russia is a formidable force. Trump responded by calling Medvedev "the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President." Medvedev should "watch his words," Trump posted at midnight in Washington on Wednesday. "He's entering very dangerous territory!" Medvedev is currently deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council and a vocal proponent of Putin's war in Ukraine – and generally antagonistic to relations with the West. He served as president between 2008-2012, effectively acting as a placeholder for Putin, who was able to circumvent constitutional term limits and remain in de facto power. The one-time reformer has rebranded over the years as an avid online troller, touting often extreme versions of official Kremlin nationalist messaging. His influence within the Russian political system remains limited. In Kyiv, residents held a day of mourning for the 31 killed on Thursday, most of whom were in a nine-storey apartment block torn open by a missile. Rescue workers pulled bodies from the debris Friday. Iryna Drozd, a 28-year-old mother of three, was laying flowers at the site to commemorate the five children killed. The youngest, whose body was found early Friday, was two years old. "These are flowers because children died. We brought flowers because we have children. Our children live across the street from here," she told AFP. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said only Putin could end the war and renewed his call for a meeting between the two leaders.

It is not a weakness, rather it is a uniqueness that we should be proud of and safeguard,' he said when launching the National Month, Sabah Day and Fly the Flag Campaign 2025 at The Magellan Sutera Resort, here, Friday. The Chief Minister said every individual is responsible for making places like schools, workplaces, business premises, places of worship and digital platforms to strengthen understanding, rather than sowing division. On the progress of Sabah's development, he said the achievements of the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 as of May 2025 showed encouraging success, with an average implementation rate reaching 94 per cent of the 467 initiatives planned. 'Among sectors that continue to be prioritised are agriculture, industry and tourism, along with efforts to enhance human capital, the peoples' wellbeing, infrastructure networks and environmental sustainability,' he said. Hajiji said various forms of assistance have also been provided to the people, including access to education and introducing the Sabah People's Protection Insurance Scheme that offers comprehensive benefits to citizens. He also urged all segments of society to fly the Jalur Gemilang everywhere, as a symbol of loyalty and love for the nation. 'Today's launch is not just a symbolic event, but a call for us to understand the true meaning of independence - not just freedom from colonisation, but also freedom from poverty and division,' he said. The National Day and Sabah Day celebration, held every August, is a historic moment that reminds the people of the struggle of their forefathers in defending the homeland and the dignity of the nation. 'As Malaysians in Sabah, we have a great responsibility to safeguard the blessings of independence and continue this legacy of struggle,' said Hajiji.
