Kate Martin and Veronica Burton help the Valkyries hold off the Mystics 68-67
WASHINGTON (AP) — Kate Martin scored 14 points, Veronica Burton had 10 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds, and the Golden State Valkyries held off the Washington Mystics 68-67 on Thursday night. Temi Fagbenle put Golden State ahead 66-65 with 5:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Valkyries didn't make their next field goal until Janelle Salaun's layup with a minute left to cap the scoring. After a missed 3-pointer by the Mystics with 37 seconds left, the Valkyries worked the clock down before calling a timeout with 3 seconds left on the shot clock. Salaun missed a shot in the lane and Golden State grabbed the offensive rebound before turning it over to give the Mystics another chance. Brittney Sykes' floater in the lane bounced off the rim as time expired. Sonia Citron, coming off a career-high 28 points on Tuesday against Chicago, scored 16 points for Washington (13-14). Shakira Austin and Kiki Iriafen each added 10 points. Iliana Rupert scored all 11 of her points in the first half and Fagbenle finished with 10 for Golden State (13-13). Tiffany Hayes became the 42nd player in WNBA history to play 10,000 minutes. Golden State made 10 of 14 field goals in the first quarter, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range, to take a 30-20 lead. The Valkyries scored 38 points the rest of the way. Washington went on a 14-2 run spanning halftime to get within 46-41 on Sykes' 3-pointer from the top of the key. With another action-packed month of MMA in the books, MMA Junkie looks at the best knockouts from July 2025: Here are the five nominees, listed in chronological order, and winner of MMA Junkie's Knockout of the Month award for July. At the bottom of the post, let us know if we got it right by voting for your choice. Nominee: Gustavo Oliveira def. Anas Azizoun at 2025 PFL Europe 2 Gustavo Oliveira put his name on the map with PFL courtesy of a knockout for the ages. Oliveira (11-2) created a highlight moment that will forever be replayed throughout his career. Oliveira smashed Anas Azizoun with a spinning back elbow out of nowhere at 3:25 of Round 1 of the bantamweight bout. Azizoun (5-2) went out immediately and crashed to the canvas. Nominee: Islam Dulatov def. Adam Fugitt at UFC 318 German fighter-turned-YouTube star Islam Dulatov finally made his promotional debut and did not disappoint against Adam Fugitt. Dulatov (12-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) connected with a check left hook that floored Fugitt (10-5 MMA, 2-3 UFC) before he finished him off with follow-up punches. The stoppage came at the 4:06 mark of Round 1 of their welterweight bout. Nominee: Bogdan Guskov def. Nikita Krylov at UFC on ABC 9 Bogdan Guskov continued his rise in the light heavyweight division when be blasted through divisional mainstay Nikita Krylov inside the opening round. The opening minutes were measured as both men relied on their technique as their guide. However, a slow leg kick from Krylov (30-11 MMA, 11-9 UFC) was his undoing. Guskov (18-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) countered beautifully with a massive punch that sat Krylov down. Follow-up punches bounced Krylov's head off the canvas. Nominee: Loai Abushaar def. Edmund Kwan at LFA 213 Loai Abushaar landed as clean a knee knockout as you'll ever see against Edmund Kwan in their lightweight bout. Less than a minute into the opening round, Abushaar (5-1) timed the absolute perfect stepping right knee that landed clean to the chin of Kwan (4-1), instantly putting him out cold with a hard fall to the canvas. The winner: Muslim Salikhov def. Carlos Leal at UFC on ABC 9 "41 years young!" Muslim Salikhov came up big as an underdog against Carlos Leal in their welterweight showdown. Salikhov (22-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) landed a brutal overhand right to take out Leal (22-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at the 0:42 mark of Round 1. Salikhov, who was a 5-1 underdog, has now won three fights in a row. Meet KeAndre Lambert-Smith, the Chargers Hall of Fame Game breakout with an NFL uncle
Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith introduced himself to the NFL world on Thursday night in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. Lambert-Smith scored a really nice touchdown during the preseason game for Los Angeles to go along with a beautiful catch from a quarterback Trey Lance pass in the first half. If you're unfamiliar with who Lambert-Smith is, he was a fifth-round pick by Los Angeles in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Auburn. He played at Penn State from 2020-2023 before transferring to Auburn for his last college season. His uncle actually played in the NFL, and you've absolutely heard of him. Lambert-Smith is former Settle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor's nephew. Talk about a football factoid to make you feel old! According to The Athletic's Robert Mays, the Chargers are quite high on the rookie receiver. Chargers fans will want to keep an eye out for Lambert-Smith throughout the rest of the preseason.
