Inter Milan President Beppe Marotta has confirmed that comments by Lautaro Martinez were aimed at Hakan Calhanoglu.

Lautaro Martinez did not mince words with his words after today's Club World Cup loss to Fluminense.
The Inter Milan captain insisted that 'anyone who wants to leave, should leave' in his comments after the match.
This may partly have been a reaction to the result. Clearly, Inter were frustrated after a surprise exit from the Club World Cup.
However, at the same time, it was hard not to read between the lines of the Nerazzurri captain's outburst.
First of all, coach Simone Inzaghi left Inter at the start of this month. He did so to chase big money at Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.
Then, in the last few weeks, Hakan Calhanoglu has been at the centre of transfer rumours. There are some reports that the Turkish international is pushing for a transfer to Galatasaray.

After the comments by Martinez, Inter President Marotta said that 'these are the words of a captain.'

'There are some suppositions, and some truths that I'm underlining.'
'It's something I always say,' the Nerazzurri President continued. 'That when a player no longer wants to be somewhere, it's right for them to go.'
'To date, no one has expressed such a desire.'
Marotta admitted that 'I imagine [Martinez] was talking about Calhanoglu.'
The Inter President then said that the club 'will talk with [Calhanoglu] and find the best possible resolution.'
Marotta added that Martinez's words 'are something the club shares, in a winning spirit that can take us far.'
Meanwhile, Marotta added that Inter 'must always thank' Calhanoglu for what he has contributed.

'Today, the transfer window officially opens. And we have to have strong positions.'
The Inter President made clear that Calhanoglu 'hasn't expressed anything to us at the moment.'
'But we're ready to listen to him. And to all the other players.'
'For now no one's said that they want to leave,' said Marotta.

Report – Negotiations Between Atletico Madrid & Inter Milan For Italy Midfielder On Stand-By Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan star Davide Frattesi opened talks over a potential transfer around a month ago. Per Sky Sport via FCInterNews, Los Rojiblancos have already established contact with the ex-Sassuolo ace. Advertisement However, negotiations have stalled as the Nerazzurri headed to the United States for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Meanwhile, Davide Frattesi didn't play in the tournament due to another fitness setback. With Inter now back in Europe, talks could resume in the coming weeks. (Photo by) Frattesi's exit looked like a done deal in January before Simone Inzaghi pulled the plug on talks with Roma. However, the ex-Inter manager continued to use the 25-year-old as a bit-part player in his system. Therefore, everyone expected Frattesi to leave San Siro in the summer, only for Inzaghi to depart first. Cristian Chivu's appointment should've handed the midfielder a lifeline. Yet, Atletico Madrid's interest seems genuine, and Frattesi may not stay immune to Diego Simeone's call.

Perhaps deploying their maverick in a free role is best for Manchester City

One feature of the Club World Cup from a Manchester City point of view was seeing Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki play their first games for the club. Although Pep Guardiola's side went out of the tournament at the round of 16 stage with a 4-3 defeat to Al Hilal, all three players showed glimpses of their quality in the United States. But in the case of Rayan Cherki, as of right now, it isn't immediately clear where he will play for City. But watching his performance against Al Hilal, perhaps playing in a free role is the ideal role for Cherki. Manchester City may get the best out of Rayan Cherki by letting him roam. Against Al Hilal, Rayan Cherki came on at the beginning of extra time. The French international came on against a tiring Al Hilal defence. But he quickly made an impact on the match. He set up Phil Foden's goal to make it 3-all with a sublime assist. The ball he provided for Foden perfectly encapsulated what Cherki adds to City's play. He can pick out a defence-splitting ball with ease, and he figures to be an important weapon for Manchester City. But his assist wasn't the only piece of his play to catch the eye in Orlando. Advertisement The role Rayan Cherki played stood out. He played a free role and drifted where he saw fit. He dropped deep to pick up possession, and Cherki also popped up in dangerous areas in the final third. It was only a cameo appearance, but it perhaps provided a glimpse of where Cherki will be best utilised by Pep Guardiola. It will be interesting to see how Rayan Cherki is deployed by Pep Guardiola. Outside of his tremendous technical and dribbling ability, Rayan Cherki is a versatile player. He can play as a number 10 or on either wing. The French international can play any of those roles in devastating fashion. But the idea of him playing in a similar role to that of Kevin De Bruyne is potentially the one that will suit him the most. Cherki could pick his spots and get into the most dangerous attacking areas for his team. His eye for a pass, especially from deep in midfield, makes a free role for Cherki a mouth-watering prospect. The idea of him and Phil Foden alternating roles on the pitch may be the dream scenario. But in the case of Rayan Cherki alone, playing a free role may bring out the best in him as a City player. Rayan Cherki showed glimpses of what he will add to the Manchester City squad in the United States. But looking ahead, perhaps if he is unleashed to drift all over the pitch that will see him quickly become a dangerous weapon for Pep Guardiola's side.

NHL Players Can Officially Play In 2026 Olympics. What About 2030?

The IIHF, NHL and NHLPA all signed an agreement to officially allow NHL players to participate in the 2026 Olympics – and potentially the 2030 edition. Representatives of the three parties, including NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and IIHF president Luc Tardif, met on Wednesday at the International Olympic Committee headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, to finalize the agreement. Advertisement The NHL and NHLPA previously agreed with the IIHF on major principles allowing NHL players to participate in February 2024. At the time, details still needed to be figured out, but the deal's now done for the first NHL participation in the Olympics since 2014 in Sochi, Russia. 'This is a tremendous day for international ice hockey and for fans across the globe,' Tardif said in a statement. 'At the initiative of the IIHF, we have worked collaboratively with NHL and NHLPA in close collaboration with the IOC and Milano Cortina Organizing Committee to make this a reality. Bringing the best players in the world back to the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 is a major step forward for our sport.' Men's hockey games will take place on NHL-sized ice on two rinks in Milan from Feb. 11, 2026, to Feb. 22. The 12 national men's teams announced the first six players joining the roster in June. Advertisement The NHL and NHLPA already announced a 2028 World Cup of Hockey, meaning we could see best-on-best men's hockey action every two years for the foreseeable future. It would be a big change from the past decade, which only featured the 2016 World Cup and then 2025 4 Nations Face-Off. The Graeme Roustan Show: Luc Tardif The Graeme Roustan Show: Luc Tardif The IIHF's president talks about working through difficult situations, the hardships in Ukraine and his relationship with the NHL. 'Best-on-best international tournaments like the Olympics provide the opportunity to create extraordinary moments for our players and fans alike,' NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh, said in a statement. 'The return to the Olympics marks a monumental moment for hockey and we thank our partners – the NHL, IOC and IIHF – for this collaborative process. The skill and passion on display in Milano Cortina will build off the excitement of the 4 Nations Face-Off and continue our game's global growth.'
