Shillong: With Meghalaya to host the next National Games, the state govt has launched an ambitious new campaign — Mission Clean Shillong 2027 — aimed at transforming the state capital into one of India's cleanest cities.
The two-year initiative, spearheaded by CM Conrad K Sangma, calls for collective action to achieve 'litter-free streets, pristine waters, and pure air'. The timing of the campaign is crucial, as Shillong is set to host thousands of athletes and tourists for the National Games.
"We have the cleanest river and the cleanest village, why not the cleanest cities too?" the CM asked, framing the mission as a natural extension of Meghalaya's legacy of environmental stewardship.
"A community-first approach unlike previous top-down programmes, the campaign emphasises participatory governance. Localities will lead monthly clean-up drives, receive incentives for waste segregation, and compete for the 'Cleanest Locality' title," an official statement said.
The draft campaign document is open to public feedback until June 25. Citizens, civil society organizations, and local leaders have been invited to contribute suggestions via email, phone, or by visiting the Shillong Municipal Board office.

"Will Never Let...": India Champions On Decision To Withdraw From Pakistan Match

The World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 saw fresh India vs Pakistan drama unfold as the two teams were paired against each other in the semi-final of the competition. As was the Indian side's earlier stance, the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, etc. refused to play against Pakistan in the knockout clash, enabling the opponents to qualify for the final automatically. Though the India Champions' decision cost them a place in the title-decider of the tournament, a member of the team clarified that the players have no regrets as nothing is above the country for them. "We are not playing against Pakistan (in semis). Our country and nation will always be at the top for us, and then anything. India ke liye kuch bhi. We are proud members of the Indian team. We have struggled and worked hard to put the Indian flag on our shirts, and we earned it. We will never let our country down, no matter what. Bharat Mata ki jai," the insider told Times of India on the condition of anonymity. The team insider also said that the stance from the players would've been the same even if the two teams were to square off in the final. "Even if we had entered the final and faced Pakistan, we all would have done the same. We all Indians are on the same page," the insider added. While both teams had shared the points after India's refusal to play, Pakistan Champions will now progress to the finals because of their top place finish, with four wins and nine points. Sporting relations between both nations have once again deteriorated due to a terror attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir earlier in April this year, which was followed by an 'Operation Sindoor' by the Indian Armed Forces in retaliation for the attack. However, things, at least for now, look normal in international cricket, with both teams set to face each other in the Asia Cup in the UAE on September 14, while the Indian women's team will be playing their ICC Women's World Cup clash against the arch-rivals on October 6 in Colombo.

'Don't understand why curator...': Shubman Gill backs coach Gautam Gambhir after pitch drama; provides update on Arshdeep Singh

India captain Shubman Gill backed head coach Gautam Gambhir after his pitch-side spat with The Oval curator ahead of the 5th Test against England. Gill also spoke about team selection, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and India's bowling workload. read more India captain Shubman Gill came out in full support of head coach Gautam Gambhir after a heated exchange between Gambhir and The Oval's chief curator, Lee Fortis. The incident took place during India's practice session on Tuesday, July 29, just before the final Test match against England. Fortis had reportedly asked the Indian coaches to stay at least 2.5 metres away from the pitch area, even though they were wearing joggers. This did not sit well with the Indian camp, and Gambhir was seen visibly angry and scolding Fortis. Gill has now responded to the drama, and has backed Gambhir. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD When asked about the matter in his pre-match press conference, Shubman Gill said the situation was avoidable. 'Coach has every right to look at the wicket. Don't understand why curator won't allow that. As long you are wearing rubber spike or are bare feet (it should not be a problem) ….don't know why he said no. There was no such issue in the last four games,' Gill said. Gill also gave an update on India's team selection, saying that left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has been asked to stay ready for the fifth Test. 'Arshdeep Singh has been asked to get ready but we will take a call on the Playing XI after looking at the pitch, by this evening,' Gill was quoted as saying by the Times of India. Talking about the team's workload, Gill said it has been tough, especially with how much they've had to field. 'It's very difficult when you've fielded for around 160 overs. It's not easy, especially on pitches where fast bowling is used more than spin. Our fast bowlers and team are in a good space. Thankfully, we don't have as many unavailable players as they do…' Gill said. Gill also provided an update on Jasprit Bumrah's availability for the fifth Test. 'We will take a decision tomorrow, wicket looks very green. So let's see,' Gill said. Bumrah had said before the series that he would play just three matches in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. India are trailing 2-1 in the series and will need to win the fifth Test to level it. The match begins on Thursday, July 31, at The Oval in London.
