Behrampore: A woman filed a complaint at Nabagram police station on Thursday alleging repeated rape by
Padma Shri
recipient Swami Pradiptanandaji, also known as Kartik Maharaj, secretary of Bharat Sevashram Sangha in Murshidabad's Beldanga.
Police have launched an investigation into the allegations.
The complainant stated that she had sought a teaching position at Bharat Sevashram Sangha and was accommodated on Chanak Adivasi Balika Vidyapith hostel's fourth floor from Jan 2013, following assurance from Kartik Maharaj that she would be hired. She alleged that he raped her on the vacant floor, promising permanent employment.
In June 2013, the woman said, she got pregnant and was forced to undergo an abortion at private facility in Behrampore.
She claimed head teacher Subhadra Mondal and another colleague were in attendance. She was then asked to vacate the hostel, and was promised that she would get a salary at home. The payments ceased, though she continued visiting the ashram fortnightly until 2019.

The survivor's statement reads: "I telephoned the Maharaj on June 12 and he told me to wait near minority office the next evening. Two persons took me on a four wheeler promising that they will take me to Maharaj and but going some distance they pushed me from the SUV, and warned me not try to contact him anymore."

"I want to unveil the real face of such a Maharaj so that he can't victimise any woman in future," she added.
Responding to the allegations, Kartik Maharaj said: "Time will reveal everything. This is a conspiracy against me to malign my name and fame. There are so many women employed in our ashram and many female disciples. Ask them; everyone will say we respect women like our mothers. You can even contact the complainant's father or family members."
BJP's South Murshidabad district president Malay Mahajan held a press conference supporting the senior monk. "It's a conspiracy against the respected Maharaj following the chief minister's complaint. Her counterparts manufactured this fabricated and false complaint as the Maharaj is good organiser and led a rally of monks against state govt's inability to save Hindus from torture. We condemn this and, if needed, we will start a movement if police harass him in the name of inquiry.
"
CM Mamata Banerjee had last year accused Kartik Maharaj of fanning communal tensions in Beldanga and intimidating voters at polling stations.
Trinamool Congress, in a statement on X, said: "A close ally of @BJP4India, Kartik Maharaj recently awarded the Padma Shri on special recommendation of PM @narendramodi's Govt, stands accused of repeatedly raping a woman inside a school building in Murshidabad. In a country where saints and seers are revered, it is appalling that such individuals are defiling the very sanctity they claim to uphold. We demand a thorough, impartial investigation and the harshest punishment if found guilty.
No political proximity should shield the accused. @NCWIndia must break its silence and take immediate cognizance."

DLSA identifies 1,200 destitute kids to connect them with govt schemes

Ranchi: The district legal services authority (DLSA), Ranchi, has identified around 1,200 destitute children under SAATHI programme for linking them to Aadhaar and subsequently to various social welfare schemes of the state administration, an official said on Saturday. According to the DLSA official, SAATHI — Survey for Aadhar and Access to Tracking and Holistic Inclusion — is being implemented by the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority in the state under the auspices of the National Legal Services Authority. The survey covers minors who are living on streets, slums and railway stations, orphans, abandoned children, those rescued from trafficking, begging and child labour, missing children not restored to families and others. DSLA Ranchi secretary Ravi Kumar Bhaskar said, "The phase for identifying the children from May 26 to June 26 is complete in Ranchi district. We have identified around 1,200 children but if more come up during the process of linking them with Aadhar and covering them under various government schemes, they will also be added." He also said during the identification exercise, sensitization programmes were held from block to the district levels with villagers, sahiyas, mukhiyas local representatives and block development officers taking part in them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo In the next phase of the camps between June 27 and August 5 would be held for providing Aadhaar cards and wherever required, birth certificates would be issued to the children so that they could be linked to welfare schemes. The DLSA would coordinate with women and child development, social welfare and education departments to ensure various govt benefits apart from school admissions and health check-ups. Notably, the state govt is implementing a sponsorship scheme under which a person or institution takes up responsibility for children and Ashram Yojna for providing food and accommodation to them. It also provides Scholarship Yojna for financial aid to the poor and destitute. The DLSA would also conduct community dialogue to reduce stigma against orphans and institutionalized children.

BJP councillors, police clash during march to corporation office over laptop graft allegation

Thiruvananthapuram: The protest march by BJP activists and councillors towards the corporation main office on Saturday turned violent as they clashed with police over allegations of corruption in a laptop distribution initiative run by the civic body. The agitators accused the administration of misappropriating public funds meant to benefit students and demanded a transparent probe. As the march reached the gates of the corporation office around 11.30am, police used water cannons to disperse the crowd. The situation grew tense as some protesters attempted to jump over barricades, prompting further police intervention. The police and the protesters even had a scuffle before the cops forced them to disperse. The protest, which was inaugurated by BJP district president Karamana Jayan, follows dramatic scenes from Thursday's corporation council meeting, which turned chaotic after LDF councillors levelled serious graft charges against two BJP councillors, Punnakkamugal's P V Manju and Pappanamcode's G S Asha Nath. The councillors were accused of illegally diverting Rs 2 lakh collected as user fees by Haritha Karma Sena. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo The council meeting descended into disorder when BJP councillors disrupted proceedings in protest. Some reportedly stormed the mayor's dais and allegedly manhandled deputy mayor P K Raju, resulting in the abrupt suspension of the session. Following the incident, the corporation secretary lodged a formal police complaint. In Saturday's protest, Museum police registered a case against the demonstrators. Defending the protest, BJP leaders claimed the corporation's laptop initiative was mired in corruption and a betrayal of student beneficiaries. The corporation, however, refuted the allegations, calling the protest a politically motivated attempt to divert attention from the corruption charges against BJP members. "We followed proper procedures for procurement and distribution," said a senior official of the corporation. "Let there be a performance audit, but there is no room for such political theatrics and violence," the official added.

AI 171 crash: Advanced DNA profiling helped piece together familial links

Ahmedabad: Four of the 241 victims aboard the ill-fated AI 171 flight were a man, his wife, son and daughter. The forensic experts first relied on the man's paternal uncle to get a sample for the Y-STR (short tandem repeat) test. The relationship, however, did not prove helpful in establishing an identity beyond doubt. So, the experts again reached out to the family to request a sample of the deceased man's mother and performed the X-STR test. "The strategy worked. Through careful kinship analysis using advanced DNA profiling, the team successfully established the man's identity, which proved to be key in identifying three other members of the family," said H P Sanghvi, director of the Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS). The identity of the last unidentified passenger aboard AI 171 was also confirmed on Friday. A team of 40 forensic scientists from the DFS and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) worked tirelessly to establish the identities of 254 of 260 crash victims based on DNA matches, a mammoth task that posed unique challenges. Autosomal (non-sex chromosome) markers were used to narrow down the connection between the victims and the donor. To verify that all four were related to each other, X-STRs were used. With the use of both X-STR and autosomal STR, we could establish the identities," said Prof Shukla. Dr Bhargav Patel, head of the CoE in DNA Forensics at NFSU, said that they have matched the DNA samples of the victims with nephews, cousins, grandparents and maternal or paternal uncles. "In conventional matches, we generally rely on either X-STR, Y-STR or autosomal STR test to establish identities. But in the cases associated with the crash, more than one test was employed in several cases. In some of the cases, even mitochondrial DNA matches were used. While nuclear DNA (with X and Y chromosomes) is inherited from both parents, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is inherited maternally," he said. The X-STR markers are inherited from mother to daughter and son, and from father to daughter, but not from father to son. Likewise, mtDNA is inherited maternally and can be matched with the maternal line. In one of the better-known cases from the airplane crash, the identification of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was carried out using the Y-STR from his nephew on the patrilineal branch. Earlier, his sister and son had provided the samples for the match. Experts said that ensure the quality of DNA samples, they relied primarily on teeth. Their second choice was bones such as the mandible (jaw) and clavicle (collarbone) that sustained severe temperatures. Several of the samples were in highly deteriorated condition, the team managed to match all samples, according to the experts.
