Dick Vitale, fans rip WNBA players for Caitlin Clark All-Star votes
The voting process for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis consisted of three voting components: 50% fan votes, 25% WNBA player votes, and 25% media votes. While Clark received the most fan votes and secured herself as one of the two captains for the event, her fellow peers in the league took a different tone by ranking her as the No. 9 guard.
As a result of the media voting Clark as third in their rankings behind Atlanta's Allisha Gray and New York's Sabrina Ionescu, Clark's total weighted points saw her finish No. 2 overall in the position, behind Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers.
Vitale pointed to the league's apparent "jealousy" of Clark's historic 2024 rookie season and how players should be thankful for her subsequent global fame as it has created a much healthier league in both television ratings and overall popularity.
While the shocking result in the players' vote most likely doesn't even bother the former Hawkeye, it could provide another chip on her shoulder to once again prove to her peers that she is the face of the WNBA.
Although Clark has not played in the past three games due to a left groin injury, her next opportunity to return to the court will be when the Fever host the Las Vegas Aces from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT.

Which means, yes, the Cowboys GM is often on a yacht somewhere off the coast of Greece or something at that critical time on the league calendar. But again ... most Cowboys fans have made their uncomfortably peace with all that. Rather, Stephen Jones in particular loves to talk about running the football side of a Cowboys as a "24/7 business.'' And that brings us to a report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler - and one we find to be troublesome on one of two levels. "So, this is kind of a relaxed situation," Fowler said Saturday morning on SportsCenter. "You know, when I talk to the people involved, they're like, 'Look, it's a lull in the summer right now, not a lot going on. People are on vacation. Team officials were out on the beach somewhere.'' Wait a minute. "People'' - that is, multiple people - from here inside The Star literally told Fowler .... It's not about whether Parsons is going to eventually get a new deal with an average of $40 million annually, which will likely be the highest APY deal ever for a non-quarterback. That's going to happen, hopefully in time for this to not be a problematic distraction over the course of Cowboys training camp, which launches in Oxnard on July 21. No, the problems are this ... One, we frankly have a very difficult time believing that multiple "people involved'' offered this information to Fowler. It doesn't pass the smell test that one person said the "lull/not a lot/beach'' quote. But the odds that multiple "people involved'' told this to the Bristol-based reporter are ... zero. Advertisement And two, even if Fowler is exaggerating and paraphrasing or even slightly misquoting ... but even one Dallas official expressed to him the outrageous idea that the Cowboys front office is taking the summer off, and that such an expression is a reflection of the truth? Detroit All-Star Gleyber Torres exits game at Cleveland after taking elbow to head
Associated Press CLEVELAND (AP) — Detroit All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres left Saturday's game against Cleveland in the middle of the first inning after he took an elbow to the head while sliding into second base. Torres got on base after drawing a walk with one out. On Riley Greene's ground ball, Cleveland second baseman Johnathan Rodriguez flipped the ball out of his glove to Brayan Rocchio. The shortstop though was drawn off the bag as Torres slid short of second base and was belted by Rocchio's glove and elbow as he fell. Torres was on the ground and examined by trainers for a couple minutes before coming out of the game. Javier Baez moved from shortstop to second base while Mark Sweeney came in to play shortstop. Torres is batting .279 and has an on-base streak of 18 games. He was one of the three Detroit players voted as an AL starter for the July 15 All-Star Game in Atlanta, along with outfielders Riley Greene and Báez. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Phillies' Ranger Suárez gets a shorter start as the ace left-hander's workload grows
Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ranger Suarez has piled up enough pitches and innings this season for the reigning NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies to fit the modern definition of a workhorse. On Saturday, it was time for a break. Or at least time to shorten the left-hander's outing against Cincinnati to give him some rest and try to prevent wear and tear on a body that broke down at the end of last season. Suárez was pulled after just five innings and 80 pitches, the fewest of each since his first start of the season in early May. Suárez earned a no-decision but did his part — along with home runs from Alec Bohm, Kyle Schwarber and Edmundo Sosa — to help the Phillies beat the Reds 5-1. Manger Rob Thomson said because of a recent heavy workload, Suárez entered on an 85-pitch limit. Suárez had pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and thrown at least six in all but his first start of the year, when he allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings. Suárez (7-2, 1.99 ERA) has been superb since then. He made six June starts and threw at least 94 pitches in all of them, and he has a 1.22 ERA over his last 11 starts. 'We went into today just trying to pull back a little bit,' Thomson said. 'I don't really concern myself with (velocity) because he pitches and that's what he did today. He threw strikes, first-pitch strikes.' Suárez said he agreed with Thomson's decision to play it safe with his left shoulder and back. Suárez has not allowed more than one earned run since June 7 at Pittsburgh, and he's permitted one or zero earned runs in nine of his 12 starts. Even though he missed April as he recovered from a back injury, Suárez's numbers are strong enough to merit consideration for a second straight All-Star nod. Thomson stumped for his star pitcher — who's eligible for free agency at the end of the season — along with fellow starters Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sanchez to represent the NL on July 15 in Atlanta. He'll find out Sunday if he's on the team. 'When the season starts, one of the goals you have as a player is to go to the All-Star Game,' Suárez said through an interpreter. 'On that end, I'm a little hopeful. If that happens, I'm excited about it. But I think the main thing for us right now is to focus on just finishing the season as healthy as possible.' The Phillies have reason to be cautious with Suárez as they chase their fourth straight playoff berth and first World Series title since 2008. Suárez went 10-2 with a 1.83 ERA in 16 starts last season through June 25 before a bad back stuck him on the injured list and he tailed off with a 2-6 mark and a 6.54 ERA over his last 11 starts. Suárez also missed time with a back injury in 2022. The Phillies need Suárez healthy and at his best in October, even if pitch counts cost him a win in July.
