Detroit All-Star Gleyber Torres exits game at Cleveland after taking elbow to head
CLEVELAND (AP) — Detroit All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres left Saturday's game against Cleveland in the middle of the first inning after he took an elbow to the head while sliding into second base.
Torres got on base after drawing a walk with one out. On Riley Greene's ground ball, Cleveland second baseman Johnathan Rodriguez flipped the ball out of his glove to Brayan Rocchio. The shortstop though was drawn off the bag as Torres slid short of second base and was belted by Rocchio's glove and elbow as he fell.
Torres was on the ground and examined by trainers for a couple minutes before coming out of the game. Javier Baez moved from shortstop to second base while Mark Sweeney came in to play shortstop.
Torres is batting .279 and has an on-base streak of 18 games. He was one of the three Detroit players voted as an AL starter for the July 15 All-Star Game in Atlanta, along with outfielders Riley Greene and Báez.

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche added former Seattle head coach Dave Hakstol to their staff Tuesday as an assistant to boost a power-play unit that struggled in the postseason. Hakstol joins an Avalanche staff under coach Jared Bednar that includes Nolan Pratt, goaltending coach Jussi Parkkila and assistant/video coach Brett Heimlich. The 56-year-old Hakstol will direct a power play that features Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar but scuffled against Dallas in the first round of the playoffs. The team was 3 of 22 on the man advantage in a series that went seven games. Colorado also allowed seven goals in the Stars series while short-handed. After the season, the team parted ways with assistant coach Ray Bennett, who was in charge of the power play. Hakstol served as the first head coach in Kraken history and was in charge from 2021-24. His team made the postseason in 2023 and eliminated the Avalanche in the first round of a series that went seven games. He finished 107-112-27 with Seattle. 'Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and experience behind the bench and will be a great fit on Jared's staff,' Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said in a statement. 'He has an extensive coaching background with a lot of success and will be a valuable addition to our team.' Hakstol also was the head coach in Philadelphia for parts of four seasons and went 134-101-42. Before the NHL, Hakstol spent 11 seasons as the head coach at the University of North Dakota, leading the team to seven Frozen Four appearances. In international competitions, he won a pair of silver medals as an assistant coach with Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship in 2017 and 2019. The 2017 squad featured MacKinnon and the 2019 team had Avalanche goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. 'This is a proud organization with a lot of talented players,' Hakstol said. Oklahoma football announces three players headed to SEC Media Days
Southeastern Conference Football Media Days are the unofficial start of the college football season, and with them just around the corner, next week in Atlanta, preseason prognostications are heating up. Oklahoma is set to go on Wednesday as the last team of the day, following Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi State. Coach Brent Venables will open the proceedings for the Sooners on the dais with a press conference for the league's assembled media. On Tuesday, OU announced which three players would join their coach. Quarterback John Mateer, defensive back Robert Spears-Jennings, and defensive lineman R Mason Thomas will serve as the Sooners' player representatives in Atlanta. Each will make the rounds individually following Venables' remarks on Tuesday. Mateer will likely draw the biggest crowd. The transfer from Washington State holds the key to Oklahoma's offensive turnaround. The Sooners ranked 113th out of 134 teams in FBS in total offense last year. Mateer, meanwhile, led the country in total touchdowns, throwing for 29 and rushing for another 15 with the Cougars. That season made him one of the top recruits in the transfer portal, from which he chose to join former WSU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle back in Norman after Venables hired Arbuckle from Pullman. Thomas, the most established player, was named preseason All-American earlier this summer by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele. His nine sacks led OU and tied him for fifth in the SEC last year, and his 12 1/2 tackles for loss ranked him in a tie for fifth in the conference. Spears-Jennings finished second on the team in tackles last year with 66, five of which came for loss. The Broken Arrow native added two sacks and an interception, as well. SEC Football Media Days begins Monday morning when LSU coach Brian Kelly takes the stage. Oklahoma's football season starts August 30 at home against FCS Illinois State.
