Rainfall warning issued for parts of western Quebec

A rainfall warning has been issued for a wide swath of the Outaouais to the north and west of Gatineau, Que., while thunderstorm watches are in place elsewhere in the region. Bands of heavy rain will begin falling Sunday night and Monday morning, according to the warning issued by Environment Canada just after 1 p.m. on Sunday. Accompanying thunderstorms mean that up to 100 millimetres could come down by Monday afternoon in communities like Cantley, Wakefield, Shawville and Maniwaki, Environment Canada said. The rain could cause flash floods and localized flooding in low-lying areas, Environment Canada said. People should be on the lookout for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Much of the wider Ottawa-Gatineau area, meanwhile, was under a thunderstorm watch as of 1:45 p.m. Sunday. That advisory covers an area stretching from Renfrew in the west to Cornwall in the east, and as far south as the Perth area. It also covers the city of Gatineau and parts of the Outaouais to the northeast. Thunderstorm watches are issued when a severe storm is possible. A warning means one is happening or likely about to happen.

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Montreal area

A person makes their way across a street during heavy rainfall in Montreal, Thursday, June 6, 2024, as a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the region. (Graham Hughes/The Canadian Press) Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Montreal area — warning of strong wind gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour, heavy rain, and even hail — on top of the heat warning in place. The weather agency says the storm could hit Sunday afternoon and evening. Some may lose power as a result. Heavy rain could cause flash flooding and significantly reduce visibility on the road. Falling hail could reach a diameter of almost one centimetre, according to Environment Canada. Nautical activities are discouraged and the agency recommends staying inside if you hear thunder. A heat warning is also in place for the area as the humidex could reach 40 degrees Sunday afternoon.
