SpaDEX mission successfully achieves 2nd docking of satellites

New Delhi: Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on Monday said that the ISRO's SpaDEX mission has successfully achieved second docking of satellites.
In a post on X social media platform, the minister said he is 'glad to inform that the second docking of satellites has been accomplished successfully'. 'As informed earlier, the PSLV-C60 / SPADEX mission was successfully launched on 30 December 2024. Thereafter the satellites were successfully docked for the first time on 16 January 2025 at 06:20 AM and successfully undocked on 13 March 2025 at 09:20 AM,' he mentioned.
The minister further said that further experiments are planned in the next two weeks.
In January, with the successful docking of the satellites of the SpaDEX mission, India became the fourth nation to ace the space docking technology.
ISRO informed the merging of two small spacecraft -- SDX01, the Chaser, and SDX02, the Target -- weighing about 220 kg each. The satellites were part of the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission, which lifted off aboard the PSLV-C60 rocket, from Sriharikota on December 30.
India is now the fourth country, after the US, Russia, and China, to master the docking technology. The docking technology was indigenously developed and has been named the 'Bharatiya Docking System'.
It includes a docking mechanism, a suite of four rendezvous and docking sensors, power transfer technology, indigenous novel autonomous rendezvous and docking strategy, and an inter-satellite communication link (ISL) for autonomous communication between spacecraft, incorporated with inbuilt intelligence to know the states of the other spacecraft, among others.
ISRO believes the SpaDeX mission will help establish India's capability in orbital docking -- a key technology for future human spaceflight and satellite servicing missions.
In addition to joining the elite club of spacefaring nations, docking technology is also key for India's impending space missions including the Moon mission, setting up the Indian space station, and lunar missions like Chandrayaan-4 without the support of GNSS from Earth.

The Axiom Mission-4, which lifted off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on Wednesday noon, marks ISRO's first-ever private spaceflight collaboration, with a total investment of Rs 550 crore. The 14-day mission, spearheaded by Axiom Space and NASA, has a four-member crew – one each from the US, India, Hungary and Poland – and marks the first visit of an Indian to the ISS. 'We sent Gaganyaan-astronaut designate Shukla to the ISS. Since the mission is led by another country, and given their expertise, we're confident that he will return safely. The journey was just a little more than an aircraft travel. But the key question is: what is the scientific output?" he said, while addressing scientists during a virtual event on Thursday. ISRO had shortlisted as many as seven experiments for Group Captain Shukla to conduct in microgravity during his 14-day mission. 'While the AX-4 will certainly boost Shukla's confidence and experience, the real value lies in the seven scientific payloads. The experiments focus on how the muscle system behaves in microgravity, how seeds respond when exposed to such an environment, and how their yield characteristics change when grown back on Earth. These are truly interesting areas of study," he emphasised. The noted rocket scientist had remained stationed in the US until the technical issues delaying AX-4 were resolved, with the SpaceX Falcon 9 finally lifting off on 25 June. The national space agency is also preparing for Chandrayaan-4, which plans to collect and bring back lunar samples. While the proposal has been approved by the Cabinet, work is underway to build the necessary infrastructure for the crucial mission. Earlier this year, ISRO also demonstrated in-space docking and undocking – a crucial capability for Chandrayaan-4, which will require two separate lift-offs. 'Everyone in India knows that Chandrayaan-3 soft-landed on the Moon, but how many of them know that it also helped in discovering minerals, and collected crucial data on the electronic cloud, seismic activity, and thermal profile of lunar soil? This knowledge needs to reach the village level. So, when we undertake Chandrayaan-4, the priority is not just bringing back a 300 kg lunar sample, but doing extensive experiments with it," he said. Highlighting ISRO's major mission targets through 2040 – including the setting up of the Bhartiya Antariksh Station and a crewed mission to the Moon – the space agency chief urged scientists to focus more on developing robust and meaningful science experiments. 'This is not the India of 40 years ago. As space scientists, we must be able to justify the crores of rupees spent on our missions and on sending astronauts to space," Dr V Narayanan continued. 'Why are we setting up a space station? Until we conduct useful, meaningful research, we cannot justify it. A lot of science needs to happen – each experiment must be meticulously planned." New Delhi: The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) announced on Thursday that it has facilitated the transfer of 10 advanced technologies developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to six Indian companies. The tripartite Technology Transfer Agreements (TTAs) were formalised between NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), IN-SPACe, and the six recipient companies during a signing ceremony held at the IN-SPACe headquarters in Ahmedabad. These cutting-edge technologies span a range of applications including satellite launch systems, ground station infrastructure, geospatial tools, and defence-related equipment. The transfer aims to accelerate domestic innovation, reduce reliance on imported systems, and expand commercial opportunities for Indian companies in both the space and non-space sectors. IN-SPACe Chairman Dr Pawan Goenka described the move as a strategic step towards creating a self-sustaining space economy. 'India has a rich R&D heritage in space technology through ISRO, and it's now time for private players to harness and commercialise these technologies. This collaboration will strengthen our space ecosystem through industry-driven innovation,' he said.

Hello, and welcome to the Best of BS Opinion, our daily roundup of the day's opinion page. The Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Scheme, which the government announced earlier this week, is an acceptance of the fact that policymakers must find ways to spark innovation and support it with funding. However, a lot will need to be done considering the scheme may not address key concerns about India's research and development (R&D), posits our first editorial. India spends less than 1 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on R&D, compared to 2.5 per cent for both China and South Korea. It has a vast pool of tech graduates, but many migrate abroad or find employment in skill-mismatched roles. Not surprisingly. India ranks 39th on the Global Innovation Index, which is way below its potential. Meanwhile, the US and Japan have had programmes that, along with research institutions and universities, did 'bluesky' fundamental research across many disciplines. In comparison, India lacks both private corporate funding for R&D, as well as funding for such R&D at the university level. RDI may address some of the concerns about private sector research but India must also need to figure out how to channel funding efficiently into fundamental bluesky research in universities and other research organisations. The rise of artificial intelligence, fake news, and deep-fakes pose a clear and present danger to social order and democratic integrity, notes our second editorial. Tackling it will need a careful balance between regulation and free speech principles. In this context, the Karnataka government's draft Bill that allows for jail of up to seven years for fake news and other problematic content is a symbol of legislative over-reach and likely to have a chilling impact on free expression. Given India's biggest constraint in terms of development is bureaucratic and regulatory capacity, it is unfortunate that an increasing amount of this scarce commodity is diverted to channel, influence or restrict the freedom of expression in the country. Unfortunately, authorities in India at all levels have become far too engaged with imposing restrictions on speech. The Union government, too, has at various points amended the Information Technology Rules to give itself broader powers to restrict online platforms. In such an scenario, India's governments must step back and re-examine their approach. The current account deficit poses little concern amid global volatility, but its financing requires close monitoring, write Dharmakirti Joshi and Adhish Verma. Last financial year, India's current account deficit (CAD) came in at a benign 0.6 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), because both the services trade and secondary income accounts saw a higher surplus. Such low reliance on external financing of CAD is a buffer against volatility in capital flows and attendant currency swings. Meanwhile, S&P Global expects world GDP growth to slow to 2.9 per cent in 2025; this will clearly adversely impact India's exports, even as healthy domestic growth, expected at 6.5 per cent, will support imports. Is that cause for worry for India's current account? Not so much — yet. India's CAD may face marginal pressure this fiscal, but there are no big worries. However, its financing needs monitoring, given volatile foreign capital flows in the light of global uncertainty. However, with comfortable foreign exchange reserves and the expectation of only a marginal rise in CAD, India is in a good position to weather global volatility. The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) recent guidelines which cut provisioning requirement on project finance to one per cent from five per cent have been welcomed by most parties. While the RBI has avoided a short-term slowdown in economic activity, our second columnist Prasanna Tantri questions whether these guidelines are a net positive from a long-term point of view. Unfortunately, he writes, the RBI circular does not distinguish between liquidity shocks and fundamental shocks, allowing lenders to extend the date of commencement of commercial operations (DCCO) without recognising NPAs even when the reason for the delay is not a liquidity shock. Extending the same concessions when the reason for delay lies with management could lead to misuse and be socially harmful. Lenders can be asked to have a policy of identifying liquidity shocks and institute a process where the DCCO is extended only after evidence that the delay is due to such shocks.
