Man says he tied migrant worker to forklift for ‘giggling'
A migrant worker's human rights network based in South Jeolla Province said yesterday the suspect told investigators: 'I told him to teach his colleague well, but he let out a giggle, so I did that.'
The victim, however, said he neither laughed nor understood what the supervisor was saying at the time.
'I didn't know what I did wrong. I was very scared (when I was tied to the forklift),' he was quoted as saying by the group.
The migrant worker, who has been employed at the factory since arriving here under the work permit system in December, initially hesitated to report the abuse out of fear he wouldn't be able to find another job.
He is currently staying at a religious facility with support from civic groups.
South Jeolla province governor Kim Yung-rok said on Saturday that a company with a good working environment has expressed interest in hiring the man.
'We will visit the company to finalise the recruitment,' Kim said.
Following the incident, which sparked national outrage, President Lee Jae-myung condemned the perpetrators and called for a thorough investigation.
Local police have booked the Korean suspect without detention on potential charges, including special confinement and special assault. — The Korea Herald/ANN

SINGAPORE: A domestic helper was sentenced to two years and six months' jail on Wednesday (July 30) for repeatedly abusing her employer's one-year-old son by hitting his head, slapping his face, pulling his hair and pinching his ear. Her acts of abuse came to light on July 23, 2024, when the boy's parents heard him crying. The couple checked footage from a CCTV camera installed in the room and saw her ill-treating their child. A further review of earlier footage revealed additional incriminating acts. Among her many acts of abuse, Talbo used her fist to hit the child's head and slapped his face. She also pulled his hair and pinched his ear. On July 16, Deputy Public Prosecutor Heershan Kaur said the victim's parents confronted Talbo after watching the clips. She denied hitting the victim despite being shown the footage. The police were alerted before she was removed from the household, and she stayed in a temporary shelter pending investigations. The child's father later reviewed the other recordings that showed Talbo ill-treating the victim between March and July 2024. He shared the footage with the authorities. Tribute to brave Thai soldier "Sergeant Toe" who died defending hundreds of fellow soldiers
BANGKOK: In the aftermath of the Thai-Cambodian border clashes between July 24-28, 2025, the Royal Thai Army has honoured the heroic actions of Sergeant Major Thawatchai Busapha (pic) – affectionately known as "Sergeant Toe". Sergeant Toe was a frontline scout who sacrificed his life at the Khao Satta Som military base in Kantharalak District, Si Sa Ket Province, while defending Thai soldiers from intense attacks. According to a heartfelt tribute shared by his fellow soldier, Suttipong Pongwan, Sergeant Toe was the leader of a small group of artillery scouts tasked with identifying targets and adjusting artillery fire. The dangerous job made the scouts prime targets for enemy forces, but it was essential for the safety of their fellow soldiers. Sergeant Toe was stationed at Khao Satta Som, a critical high ground along the border, from where he conducted vital surveillance. On July 24, the first day of the clashes, Sergeant Toe's bravery was on full display as he identified and neutralised threats that could have endangered the lives of hundreds or even thousands of soldiers. His efforts helped prevent tanks from advancing into the area, and the enemy suffered significant losses throughout the day and night. Thailand accuses Cambodia of 'flagrant violation' of truce
BANGKOK: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement condemning Cambodia's violation of the ceasefire agreement, calling on Phnom Penh to immediately cease hostilities and return to full compliance. Details of the ministry's 'Statement on VIolation of the ceasefire agreement by Cambodian forces' are as follows: In the late evening of July 29, 2025, less than 24 hours after a ceasefire agreement was reached between Thailand and Cambodia, Thai military positions in Phu Makua, Si Sa Ket Province, came under attack by small arms fire and grenade assaults launched by Cambodian forces. The attack continued into the morning of July 30, 2025. This represents a flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement which came into place at midnight on July 28, 2025. Such an act of aggression constitutes once again a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement by Cambodian forces and their apparent lack of good faith.
