KwaDukuza waste collection resumes, lifeguards return after strike
During the strike, waste went uncollected and beachgoers were left without lifeguard protection (until Wednesday), despite municipal assurances that critical services would not be impacted.
The strike was led by the South African Municipal Workers Union to demand improved salary conditions and only ended after workers were addressed by Deputy-Minister for Employment and Labour, Jomo Sibiya, in a meeting on Thursday.
More details on the resolution are expected next week.
The strike led to a backlog on some services and waste collection teams will work through the weekend to try and catch up.
On Saturday, teams will focus on clearing refuse in Shakaville and Groutville, including Cranbrook, Mphinyane, and Mnyundwini. Other areas scheduled for service include Gledhow Village, Ntshawini, D-Section, Lindelani, Zamani, Soweto, Mdlebeni, Nyathikazi, KwaTwele, Nonoti, Mbonisweni, Hangoes, Malende, Jobs Farm, Charlottedale and KwaMyeza.
On Sunday, clean-up efforts will continue in Newtown, Rocky Park, Blythedale Beach, Windy Heights, and Glenhills. Teams will also cover Zinkwazi and Darnall, including the Hesto Plant area, and parts of Ntshawini, such as Nhlakanipho Ngema Street, Joyous Guesthouse Road, Gidela, and KwaMadundube.
The municipality has asked residents to store waste safely until collection and to avoid illegal dumping, which causes delays and poses health risks.

The metro is exploring ways to boost the efficiency of teams for streetlight maintenance after Ward 46 residents handed over a petition demanding repairs. According to the petition, only 20% of the ward's streetlights are working, leaving much of the area in darkness at night and raising serious safety concerns. The petition, signed by residents across the ward, calls for urgent intervention and criticises what it describes as 'a lack of basic service delivery', despite residents paying their monthly municipal bills. It also claims that the community has been told that there will be a R35.5-million budget cut for streetlight materials. However, the metro has denied these allegations. In their petition, residents make three key demands: – The creation of an action plan with deadlines for the repair of streetlights in the ward. – The appointment of a dedicated official to be accountable for the repairs. – Regular progress updates via the ward councillor to inform residents. Metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba confirmed that Ward 46 has 1 950 streetlights but added that the number of broken lights changes regularly, and because of this, exact numbers aren't available daily. However, he said the metro is working on a strategy to improve lighting maintenance efforts across the city. 'The Energy and Electricity Business Unit is in the process of exploring ways or options to capacitate internal teams to focus on the maintenance of public lighting infrastructure across the city, including Ward 46,' Bokaba said. He stated that while this long-term plan is being finalised, maintenance work continues to take place daily, and the city is prioritising main roads and newly logged complaints. Bokaba said senior supervisors already form part of maintenance teams, and are responsible for monthly and weekly maintenance planning, and making sure that work is completed in line with national standards and NERSA regulations. 'The metro has created WhatsApp communication portals for ward councillors and residents to receive updates on daily activities, and public lighting schedules will also be made available via these channels.' Addressing concerns over resources, Bokaba said the metro is currently making the best use of available materials, contractors, and technicians to deal with both existing and newly reported faults. 'The city is reconfiguring electricity operations to ensure that maintenance resources – technicians, materials, and specialised equipment – are aligned with the scale of work needed,' he said. This process is expected to improve turnaround times and reduce the likelihood of future backlogs. While the petition raises alarm over the alleged budget cut, Bokaba dismissed the claims. 'The Energy and Electricity Business Unit is not aware of any such budget reduction for materials for the maintenance of public lighting infrastructure.' The petition also highlights growing fears over crime and road safety in unlit areas. In response, Bokaba said the TMPD has increased visibility in areas of concern, and teams are working on strategies to improve service delivery. Although the metro has not formally responded to the petition, Bokaba confirmed that two enquiries have been received on the issue of streetlight repairs in Ward 46, one of which has already been addressed. Eskom to implement nine-hour power outage in parts of Gauteng
Due to planned maintenance, Eskom has scheduled a nine-hour power outage in parts of Soweto, Gauteng. The maintenance is scheduled for Thursday, 7 August, from 9:00 to 18:00. Eskom said there will be an electricity supply disruption in Soweto due to maintenance that will be conducted on the distribution network. The planned power outage is set to affect customers in Doornkop Blocks 5 and 7, Molapo, Moroka, and Rockville on Thursday, 7 August from 9:00 to 18:00 as mentioned above. The interruption of electricity is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,' the power utility said. 'Eskom in Gauteng conducts planned maintenance on the distribution electricity network across the province as part of its maintenance plan. Maintenance needs to be conducted to service the infrastructure to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the electricity supply.' For safety reasons, Eskom advises customers to assume that all electrical appliances remain live throughout the power outage. 'We appreciate your cooperation and apologise for any inconvenience this maintenance may cause,' Eskom said. The power provider also noted that unforeseen circumstances could prevent the scheduled maintenance in Soweto from going ahead as planned. 'Lucia's Kiddos' grows from a few loaves to a lifeline for a community What began with R100 and a few loaves of bread has grown into a lifeline for 83 children, thanks to a domestic worker's vision and a community's compassion. Seven years ago, Lucia Majola from Cottonlands, Verulam, had a dream in which God told her to feed hungry children in her area. 'I asked, 'How will I do that? I am just a domestic worker who also needs help.' The voice in her dream replied, 'Start with the little you have,'' said Majola. The dream stayed with her, but it wasn't until last year, when hardship struck, that her sister reminded her of the dream. She took the plunge and began feeding children who often go hungry over weekends. Today, she feeds 83 children every Saturday and Sunday. 'More children come, and I wish I could feed them all. But I am deeply thankful to everyone who has helped. It means so much to the children and their parents.' Her story inspired Donovan Chisholm, a sales executive at Bidvest McCarthy Toyota Ballito. 'If she could start with R100, so could I,' he said. Chisholm rallied colleagues and formed a group called Making a Difference, encouraging community members to contribute R100, food or time. The initiative grew rapidly, with Ballito families joining in, donating meals, clothes and toys, while bringing joy through dancing, singing and play. 'For those few hours, there's no darkness, just life and light,' said Chisholm. In the past year, the group has served more than 7 000 meals and is now registering as an NPO. Plans are under way to build a shelter to protect children during food distributions. Their latest project, a winter blanket drive led by the Toyota Knights of Bidvest McCarthy Toyota Ballito, has raised over R15 000 worth of blankets, with support from Radio Life & Style, local donors and even international donors. 'One mother told me her daughter had considered ending her life, but after joining the weekend programme, she found hope,' said Chisholm. 'We are just getting started.
