SEC Coach Under Fire for Offseason Golf Habit After Back-to-Back Losing Seasons

SEC Coach Under Fire for Offseason Golf Habit After Back-to-Back Losing Seasons originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
There's an old sentiment in college football that you don't want your coach to be a good golfer. Why? Because if he's good at golf, then he obviously isn't spending enough time in the facilities working, and is likely out on the course more often than he should be.
That's got to be the feeling among Auburn fans this week, with a report from some investigative fans showing that head coach Hugh Freeze has been spending a lot of time on the golf course this summer.
According to the fan, Freeze played 10 rounds in the first 20 days of June.

Had some friends who play in Auburn tell me how much CHF plays, and it has led me to check his GHIN," the poster wrote. "Hugh played golf 10 of the first 20 days this month. I know people that are RETIRED that don't get to play that much, let alone making $7mm a year. Not blaming our struggles on this, but goodness, when you're under .500 here and ranked 47th in recruiting, I have concerns."

That's a fair thing to be concerned about as an Auburn fan. Since joining the Tigers in 2023, Freeze has gone 11-14 in his 25 games, with an 0-1 bowl record.
Things aren't expected to get much better going forward, either. Most sports books have Auburn with a 7.5 win total for 2025, with ESPN's Football Power Index giving the Tigers just a 1.8% chance of winning the SEC.
While it may be a bit crazy for someone to deep dive into the Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN) to sleuth out a handicap, this Auburn fan feels justified in his findings.
"I understand that it is insane behavior for me to have dove into this, and I do not care. When I have friends tell me he is at the course every day as an SEC head football coach, I am going to investigate. Just pretend like you're working harder than you actually are, because I am tired of losing."

Seeing as it is the offsesaon in college football, there are few media availabilities for Freeze to be pressed on this, if any. We'll see if Auburn reporters bring it up come August.

Cowboys Have Rivals On Notice For One Clear Reason

Cowboys Have Rivals On Notice For One Clear Reason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO — Dallas Cowboys fans have begged and pleaded in recent years for their team to make the gamble and go after a big name by trade or through free agency. A year ago, they infamously allowed Derrick Henry to sign with the Baltimore Ravens despite a perfectly clear avenue to pursue him. Advertisement This offseason, they made the necessary moves through free agency and the draft. However, they had not pursued any needle-moving players through those major acquisition periods. That all changed in May when the Cowboys traded for George Pickens, providing a major upgrade at the wide receiver position. This gives Dallas one of the most formidable duos on paper heading into next season. But the Cowboys are not the only ones aware of the enormity of this deal. Their aggressive maneuvering has their most staunch adversaries on notice. 'The spotlight is on him because I've talked with a lot of people around the league, including the NFC East. That Pickens trade has their full attention,' ESPN's Fowler said Saturday. Advertisement 'They believe that really does add a new dimension because he's one of the best contested ball-catchers in the entire league. If he can stay on the upright, keep that maturity sort of in check in a contract year, he'll do big things with CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott.' The duality of Pickens' and Lamb's talents should blend together with brilliance. Lamb's precision as a route runner out of the slot combining with Pickens' downfield presence makes for a tantalizing air-raid punch. But if foes around the NFC East are taking notice, it's because they have done the same things to establish themselves as contenders. The Washington Commanders made trades for Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel at the star of the offseason while the Philadelphia Eagles have stretched their big moves over the last several years. A trade for A.J. Brown a few years back and the signing of Saquon Barkley a year ago made them undeniable in their quest for a title. Advertisement Time will tell if a similar fate awaits the Cowboys. Regardless, the trade for Pickens is reflective of that contending mindset and one that could pay off in a major way. Texas QB Arch Manning, LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier becoming good friends this offseason

In December, Texas quarterback Arch Manning and LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier could be sitting next to each other in New York City waiting to see which name will be called as the winner of the Heisman Trophy. Turns out, they'll already be good friends if that happens. The two Louisiana natives are both from football families. Manning's two uncles and grandfather all played in the NFL. Nussmeier is the son of a longtime college and NFL coach. While they might be rivals in the SEC and for national awards, they two were paired up as roommates at the Manning Passing Academy this year. According to Manning, the two have become close. They even did some marketing for Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers together. 'I love Garrett, he's the man,' Manning said of Nussmeier, per On3. 'He's a coach's kid, so he knows ball. We went to Walmart last night and got food. So he's the man. I'm glad — I'm gonna build a good relationship with him.' According to the LSU signal calling, the feeling is mutual. 'It means a lot to me,' Nussmeier said of Manning's comments, per On3. 'I love Arch. He's a really good player. Want nothing but the best for him. He may say that he looks up to me, but there are definitely parts of me that looks up to him, too. His ability, his swagger, his mindset. It's something that is really fun to watch. He's a really, really good player. … Definitely rooting for him, and I'm very appreciative of him.' Manning and Nussmeier currently hold the first and second best odds to win the Heisman this season and will get compared to each other all season. While they won't meet during the regular season, Texas and LSU could matchup in the SEC championship or College Football Playoff. Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire. Eagles Tight End Explains Reason For Pay Cut

Eagles Tight End Explains Reason For Pay Cut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. At one point this offseason, there was a belief that Philadelphia Eagles standout Dallas Goedert had played his final game with the organization. The former second-round tight end, who carried a cap hit of over $11 million, had struggled with injuries over the last few years. Advertisement The money didn't match the level of production Philly had expected. Despite all the twists and turns this offseason brought, however, Goedert and the team found a way to reach an agreement ... one that keeps him with the Eagles for the 2025 season. As part of the new deal, Goedert took a pay cut to remain with Philly for the final year of his contract. It's a safe bet that 2025 will officially be his final year with the organization now more than ever. But that doesn't mean the veteran is bothered about that reality. He's happy to be a part of the team's push for a repeat championship this season. Advertisement It's a big reason he was willing to take a lesser deal. "When I got drafted a year after they won the Super Bowl, I was able to experience the fun parts of a Super Bowl the year after winning the Super Bowl," Goedert said on ESPN's "NFL Live," as transcribed by Nick Shook. "After we won and the opportunity to run it back again to see the banner drop, it just wouldn't have felt -- it would have felt I was missing on a lot not being there to see all that stuff." Philadelphia has used Goedert, along with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, as an essential piece in its passing offense. The trio has been one of the best in football over the last few years. Advertisement If Goedert can stay healthy, he can make his final year in Philly one for the record books. At the very least, the Eagles should be able to maintain their title as a Super Bowl contender with their star pass catcher.
