What is the Ashoka Senior Fellowship?
Ashoka is the world's largest network of social entrepreneurs, advancing the vision that everyone can be a changemaker. For over four decades, Ashoka has identified and supported leading social innovators whose ideas create system-changing impact. With a presence in over 90 countries, Ashoka Fellows work across sectors to solve some of the world's most pressing challenges. Senior Fellows are seen as role models who bridge sectors and inspire the next generation of leaders. Through its fellowship, collaborative platforms, and youth programs, Ashoka empowers individuals and institutions to drive lasting social change.
Dr. Shruti Nair, Diamond Leader, Ashoka Innovators for the Public, India, shared 'At Ashoka, we believe that in today's rapidly changing world, it's not enough to prepare young people for the jobs that exist — we must empower them to create the solutions the world needs. Mekin's impact through Udhyam has already helped shift the mindset at a huge scale around the importance of young people growing up with an entrepreneurial outlook. He is one of roughly 20 social entrepreneurs elected as Senior Ashoka Fellows in India over the last few decades. We are thrilled to welcome Mekin into the Ashoka community. His values and co-leadership are critical to advancing our shared vision of India as an 'Everyone a Changemaker' society.'
'Given the right environment, anyone can be a changemaker' - Mekin Maheshwari
Mekin Maheshwari, an early Flipkart leader - India's largest homegrown ecommerce brand that rivals Amazon, played diverse and critical roles, including Head of Technology and later Chief People Officer, where he helped shape the company's culture and scale its team of 350,000 employees.Despite his success, he felt unfulfilled and concerned about India's education system lagging behind its economic growth. Realizing that job creation couldn't match population growth, he identified the need for a mindset shift toward self-reliance. Taking a gap year, he traveled across India, meeting social innovators to deeply understand the challenge.
Developing an entrepreneurial mindset builds personal agency and critical life skills, yet remains underutilized—especially for youth in developing economies. Mekin Maheshwari observed that while India has a demographic advantage with 67% of its population in working age, unemployment and lack of opportunities keep low- to middle-income families in cycles of poverty. Notably, this mindset had never been introduced at scale in school systems serving underprivileged communities. To address this, Mekin founded Udhyam with the goal of embedding entrepreneurial thinking into mainstream education. By partnering with public education systems, Udhyam aims to make this approach scalable, relevant, and essential to growing up in India.
Udhyam is not only enabling a shift in young people's mindsets, but also influencing how adults from low- to middle-income communities in India view their futures—moving from job-seeking to job-creating. Through practical skilling and mentoring, the initiative empowers individuals to navigate uncertainty and build livelihoods on their own terms. This approach is helping youth develop agency early in life, while also supporting adults to grow sustainable micro-enterprises. Together, these efforts are building a culture of self-reliance, economic participation, and local problem-solving within communities often excluded from traditional opportunity pathways.
'We believe that every individual has the potential to thrive, if we create enabling environments. This fellowship is not just a personal honour but a recognition of the collective will at Udhyam to reimagine education, livelihoods, and dignity for all,' said Mekin Maheshwari.
This recognition of over 8 years of grassroots work by an ex-corporate leader is rare, most corporate leaders tend to transition into philanthropy or take on advisory roles with think tanks. Through this milestone, Ashoka and Udhyam aim to spark a broader dialogue: What if more corporate leaders brought their scale-oriented thinking to address the root causes of social challenges? Mekin's journey offers a powerful blueprint.

Monsoon session: BJP to raise BBMP split, tunnel road plans in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: BJP has stepped up its opposition to the proposed tunnel road project and the plan to divide BBMP into five municipal corporations. Party MLAs from Bengaluru met in the city Saturday to chalk out a strategy and announced plans to raise both issues in the upcoming legislature session. The meeting was chaired by the opposition leader in the legislative assembly, R Ashoka, and BJP state president BY Vijayendra. Speaking to reporters, Ashoka accused the Congress govt of pursuing the BBMP split for electoral gains. "The division of BBMP is being carried out solely to ensure the Congress party's electoral victory and not for the city's development. We are opposing the plan to divide Bengaluru into five corporations. This is harmful to the interests of the city. In the future, one corporation may end up fighting with another," he said. He added BJP had already approached the judiciary. "Petitions have been filed in both the high court and Supreme Court." So, they are pushing for its division. They have imposed taxes on everything and are hoping to win at least two corporations and showcase it to (Congress MP) Rahul Gandhi," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Ashoka also alleged irregularities in the tunnel road project. "We don't object to the concept of a tunnel road. But they have allowed a dubious company to prepare the DPR. The company was caught copying details from another project and fined Rs 15 lakh. After this, the company should have been blacklisted, not given further responsibility worth Rs 7-8 crore." He warned, "Metro is already being constructed underground in Bengaluru. If a tunnel road is built beneath it, it could compromise safety." Echoing Ashoka's views, Vijayendra said, "Projects like the underground tunnel road and the division of BBMP into five are not in the best interest of the city. Similar experiments in cities like Mumbai have failed. BJP will continue to oppose it." He also highlighted concerns over housing approvals. "Thousands of houses are ready for housewarming, but NOCs have not been issued. We held a detailed discussion on it today," he added.

Walking Plaza Project in Colaba nearing halfway mark

MUMBAI: Colaba is poised to gain a new tourist-friendly attraction as work on the highly anticipated walking plaza by BMC neared 40% completion on Sunday. Located along Captain Prakash Pethe Marg, between Deepak Jog Chowk (Mantralaya) and Bhai Bhandarkar Chowk (Badhwar Park), the 210-metre stretch aims to enhance walkability and promote a greener, more pedestrian-centric environment in the heart of South Mumbai. An artist's impression Under the vision of BJP MLA Rahul Narwekar, the project intends to transform Colaba into a more pedestrian-friendly space. 'With wider footpaths, dedicated green corridors, improved lighting, and organised pedestrian zones, this project will greatly enhance the walking experience for residents, students, and visitors,' said Narwekar. 'We are actively working on this transformation and are committed to ensuring steady progress and long-term benefits for the community.' The walking plaza will feature stamped concrete footpaths and vibrant 3D street art. To enhance the area's visual charm, the stretch will be lined with Ashoka trees and ornamental plants. It will also have a multi-utility corridor dedicated to landscaping and community use. As part of this beautification plan, the boundary wall of Badhwar Park will be refurbished. Directional sign boards will be installed to guide pedestrians. Some of the landmarks along the stretch include Mantraaya, New Administrative Building, Sachivalay Gymkhana, Yashwantrao Chavhan Centre, Machhimar Nagar Jetty, and President Hotel. It was spearheaded by former BJP Corporator Makarand Narwekar, and designed as an immersive public space. With an estimated cost of ₹5 crore, the initiative is being jointly funded by the tourism department and the District Planning and Development Committee(DPDC) and is being implemented by the civic body. Jaydeep More, assistant commissioner (in charge) of A ward said, 'The work is ongoing. Due to rains, it has stopped for some time but 40% of the work is completed.' Once the first phase of the Walking Plaza is completed, the BMC plans to replicate similar pedestrian-friendly initiatives across other parts of Colaba. 'Prioritizing accessibility and smart urban planning, I will continue to drive meaningful changes that enhance the way we experience our city,' Narwekar added.
