Reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh brimming, Nagarjuna Sagar is 95% full

Reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh witnessed robust inflows this monsoon, with combined water storage of all reservoirs — major, medium and minor — reaching 738.76 tmc as against the total capacity of 1,004 tmc, which is 73.56 % on Friday. The Srisailam reservoir on the Krishna river has witnessed significant inflows amid continued rainfall in the upstream regions, prompting steady water releases to maintain reservoir safety and manage power generation. As of 7 P.M. on Friday, the reservoir's water level stood at 268.975 metres (882.50 feet), just below its Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 269.750 metres (885.00 feet). The gross storage currently is 201.58 tmc, with a live storage of 198.16 tmc out of the total live capacity of 212.38 tmc. Similarly, the Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP), also witnessed inflows. The current storage stood at 298.01 tmc as against the gross storage capacity of 312.05 tmc, 95.50%. The water impounded at the Pulichintala project is 40.49 tmc as against the gross capacity of 45.77 tmc. The water is being discharged from the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada. The water stored in the barrage is 3.07 tmc compared to the capacity of 3.07 tmc, which is 100%. Inflows at Srisailam The Srisailam reservoir is witnessing massive inflows following upstream discharges, particularly from the Jurala and Sunkesula projects. The project is receiving an instantaneous inflow of 2,52,560 cusecs, primarily fed by Jurala Project's 1,85,459 cusecs spillway release and an additional 23,607 cusecs overall from Jurala, along with 43,494 cusecs from Sunkesula. There are no current contributions from the Handri or local catchments. The total realised inflow at the reservoir is estimated at 3,17,980 cusecs. To regulate the rising water levels, the outflow has been increased to 3,20,841 cusecs, distributed across various channels. This includes 35,000 cusecs via the Pothireddypadu Head Regulator (PRP), 3,225 cusecs into the HNSS Canal, and 1,600 cusecs through the Mylavaram Canal. No water is currently being lifted via the Muchumarri Lift Irrigation Scheme. Hydropower generation has been stepped up significantly. The Right Power House is discharging 30,277 cusecs, and the Left Power House 35,315 cusecs, totalling 65,592 cusecs for electricity production. To handle the remaining surplus, 2,15,424 cusecs is being released through eight spillway gates, each raised by 10 feet. The PH-2 pump mode remains inactive at this stage, suggesting no immediate reverse pumping operations. Authorities continue to closely monitor the inflows and reservoir safety. With upstream projects contributing large volumes and rainfall forecasted to continue in parts of the catchment, authorities have ensured all safety protocols are in place.
