Jio, Airtel add 99.8% of new telecom subscribers in May as Vi, BSNL lose users: Trai
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel together accounted for over 99.8% of all new telecom subscribers in May, helping India's total telecom subscriber base rise marginally to 120.7 crore, according to the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).
The sector added a total of 43.58 lakh net subscribers in May, with Jio and Airtel contributing a combined 43.51 lakh. The total subscriber base had stood at 120.3 crore in April, according to PTI.
Subscriber gains were largely offset by losses reported by Vodafone Idea (Vi), BSNL, MTNL and Reliance Communications. While Jio added 27 lakh mobile users, taking its total wireless base to 47.51 crore and market share to 40.92%, Airtel added 2.75 lakh new users, growing its mobile base to 39 crore and a 33.61% market share.
By contrast, Vi lost 2.74 lakh subscribers, BSNL 1.35 lakh, MTNL 4.7 lakh and Reliance Communications 30 mobile users.
India's mobile subscriber base grew to 116.84 crore, while landline connections rose by 3.34% to 3.86 crore. In the fixed-line segment, Reliance Jio led with a net addition of 12.76 lakh new subscribers, followed by Airtel with 99,000, Tata Teleservices with 4,890, Vi with 1,795 and STPL with 252. MTNL and BSNL continued to shed customers, losing 66,834 and over 46,000 fixed-line users respectively, the agency reported.

The country's total broadband user base climbed to 97.48 crore in May. Jio dominated the segment with 49.44 crore broadband users, followed by Airtel at 30.2 crore, Vi at 12.66 crore, BSNL at 3.43 crore, and Atria Convergence with 23.2 lakh users.
Trai noted a dip in 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) subscribers from 75 lakh in April to 74 lakh in May, due to Reliance Jio reclassifying over 10 lakh FWA-UBR subscribers under the fixed-line (FTTx) category.

Trump plans executive orders to power AI growth in race with China
The Trump administration is readying a package of executive actions aimed at boosting energy supply to power the U.S. expansion of artificial intelligence, according to four sources familiar with the planning. Top economic rivals U.S. and China are locked in a technological arms race and with it secure an economic and military edge. The huge amount of data processing behind AI requires a rapid increase in power supplies that are straining utilities and grids in many states. The moves under consideration include making it easier for power-generating projects to connect to the grid, and providing federal land on which to build the data centers needed to expand AI technology, according to the sources. The administration will also release an AI action plan and schedule public events to draw public attention to the efforts, according to the sources, who requested anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The White House did not respond to requests for comment. Training large-scale AI models requires a huge amount of electricity, and the industry's growth is driving the first big increase in U.S. power demand in decades. Between 2024 and 2029, U.S. electricity demand is projected to grow at five times the rate predicted in 2022, according to power-sector consultancy Grid Strategies. Meanwhile, power demand from AI data centers could grow more than thirtyfold by 2035, according to a new report by consultancy Deloitte. Building and connecting new power generation to the grid, however, has been a major hurdle because such projects require extensive impact studies that can take years to complete, and existing transmission infrastructure is overwhelmed. Among the ideas under consideration by the administration is to identify more fully developed power projects and move them higher on the waiting list for connection, two of the sources said. Siting data centers has also been challenging because larger facilities require a lot of space and resources, and can face zoning obstacles or public opposition. The executive orders could provide a solution to that by offering land managed by the Defense Department or Interior Department to project developers, the sources said. The administration is also considering streamlining permitting for data centers by creating a nationwide Clean Water Act permit, rather than requiring companies to seek permits on a state-by-state basis, according to one of the sources. In January, Trump hosted top tech CEOs at the White House to highlight the Stargate Project, a multi-billion effort led by ChatGPT's creator OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle to build data centers and create more than 100,000 jobs in the U.S. Trump has prioritized winning the AI race against China and declared on his first day in office a national energy emergency aimed at removing all regulatory obstacles to oil and gas drilling, coal and critical mineral mining, and building new gas and nuclear power plants to bring more energy capacity online. He also ordered his administration in January to produce an AI Action Plan that would make 'America the world capital in artificial intelligence' and reduce regulatory barriers to its rapid expansion. That report, which includes input from the National Security Council, is due by July 23. The White House is considering making July 23 'AI Action Day' to draw attention to the report and demonstrate its commitment to expanding the industry, two of the sources said. Trump is scheduled to speak at an AI and energy event in Pennsylvania on July 15 hosted by Senator Dave McCormick. Amazon earlier this month announced it would invest $20 billion in data centers in two Pennsylvania counties.

Airtel trails Jio in net user additions, Vi loses more
Reliance Jio far outpaced Bharti Airtel on net subscriber additions in May, while state-run BSNL and cash-strapped Vodafone Idea (Vi) continued to lose subscribers, showed data issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Friday. Jio added 2.7 million net subscribers in May, while Airtel added 275,621 wireless subscribers, Trai data showed. In the same period, Vi lost 274,103 subscribers while BSNL's user base fell by 1.35 overall wireless subscribers increased by 2.09 million in May, including 242,152 in rural areas. Total user base stood at 1.16 billion as of May-end. Jio closed the month with a wireless user base of 475 million, followed by Airtel at 390 million, and Vodfone Idea at 204 million. BSNL's wireless user base stood at 90 million. Trai data also showed a fall in 5G fixed-wireless access users to 7.4 million as of May 31, from 7.5 million in April, led by a reclassification of users of FWA-UBR (fixed wireless access unlicensed band radio) as fixed wireline customers. As a result, Jio reported a loss of 286,331 customers in the 5G FWA category, but actually gained 1.03 million customers, as per the reclassified data. Airtel reported a gain of 182,458 5G FWA users. Despite the loss in users, Reliance Jio continued leading the growing 5G FWA segment with 5.85 million, while Bharti Airtel had 1.54 million users as of May 31, Trai data showed. Jio led the market in terms of wireless broadband subscribers with 480.96 million users, with Airtel the second-largest at 292.89 million, followed by Vi at 126.67 terms of active subscribers, both Reliance Jio and Airtel reported a rise in May, while Vi and BSNL saw a decline in subscribers who were active on the date of peak VLR (visitor location register) in May. Reliance Jio had the highest number of active subscribers as against its total wireless subscriber base, at 462 million (97.25% of its total subscribers), followed by Airtel with 386.84 million (99.13% of total subscribers). Vi's active user base fell to 172.87 million (84.56%), and BSNL had the lowest proportion of active subscribers at 57.85 million (63.73%). Active, or visitor location register (VLR) data, put out by Trai every month, indicates the number of mobile users regularly using a mobile network. As of May, Jio continued to lead the Indian market for wireless services with a 40.92% market share, followed by Airtel at 33.61%, Vi at 17.61%, and BSNL at 7.82%. May saw 14.03 million requests for mobile-number portability, increasing the cumulative requests to 1.14 billion in May, since MNP was implemented.

4 AISATS executives seen ‘partying' days after Ahmedabad crash fired
New Delhi: Airport services firm Air India SATS Services (AISATS) Private Limited on Friday said it has taken 'firm disciplinary action' against four executives for hosting a party at its office, days after a video clip of the gathering sparked criticism. AISATS is a joint venture between Tata Group-owned Air India and Singapore's SATS Ltd, a global provider of gateway and food solutions. In India, the company offers a range of airport services, including ground handling and cargo operations. In a statement, AISATS said it stood in solidarity with the families affected by the tragic loss of AI 171 and expressed regret over the lapse in judgment shown in the internal video. 'At AISATS, we stand in solidarity with the families affected by the tragic loss of AI 171 and deeply regret the lapse in judgment reflected in a recent internal video. The behaviour does not align with our values, and firm disciplinary action has been taken against those responsible as we reaffirm our commitment to empathy, professionalism, and accountability,' its spokesperson said. The statement didn't mention when the party took place. The backlash began after a video posted on X on June 20, appeared to show AISATS staff dancing to music during an in-office celebration. Many people criticised the party that appeared to have been hosted just days after the London-bound Air India 171 flight crashed just outside Ahmedabad airport, killing around 260 people. The video sparked outrage on social media, with many users calling the event insensitive and disrespectful to the victims' families still mourning their loss. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is currently investigating the crash of AI-171.
