Many beauty experts say that looking after your face is the number one step when it comes to getting your make-up right.

But the controversial new 'caveman' skincare routine is dividing opinion online with some hailing it as a godsend and others suffering painful infections.
In the age of complicated 10-step routines, this method aims to introduce a more relaxed approach while naturally repairing the skin barrier.
Simply put, the viral regime involves doing absolutely nothing to your skin.
The idea behind the trend is that your skin will naturally reset itself and become healthier.
The extreme practice discourages participants from using any skincare products, wearing makeup, using SPF or even washing their face while taking part in the trend.
TikTok users are taking part in the routine for between seven and 30 days, but the trend has produced some mixed results.
Social media experts at Media Mister weighed in on the trend to weigh up the pros and cons.
The team said: "Sometimes, over-using skincare products can cause more harm than good to your skin, particularly when it comes to harsh exfoliating acids, serums, and cleansers.
"In some cases, cutting out any strong cleansers or exfoliating acids in your routine may prevent the build-up of any dead skin, helping to keep your skin from drying out unnecessarily.
"It is possible that in the TikTok age of skincare 'hacks' and beauty influencers that we are now doing too much to our skin, which makes it more prone to irritation and breakouts. This is what the caveman method aims to prevent."

The experts say that taking a brief break from your skincare routine can be worthwhile if you've been suffering from skin sensitivity. If you regularly struggle with rashes, eczema, and breakouts, then cutting out your skincare products can help you identify the specific source that your skin is reacting to.
It's believed that participating in the trend will allow your skin barrier to naturally repair itself following over-exposure to chemical treatments.
The trend also encourages participants to stop worrying and overworking their skin.
Stress can often exacerbate the risk of breakouts and other skin concerns, which is why the caveman method aims to implement a more relaxed approach to skincare.
However, it's recommended that the caveman method is only used for a short period of time to avoid causing more harm than good to your skin. If you are considering using the caveman method, then a maximum length of seven to ten days would be ideal.
The Media Mister gurus say: "Experts rarely recommend cutting out all forms of skincare entirely, particularly when it comes to washing your face with water and applying SPF.
"If you are following the trend, then ensure that you're still wearing SPF to avoid causing any serious damage to your skin during the warmer weather.
"It's also recommended to continue washing your face with water throughout the trend to prevent the buildup of bacteria and clogged pores, which can make you more prone to breakouts."
However, some TikTok influencers have taken the trend to the extreme, which highlights the many dangers associated with the viral caveman method.
The experts said: "One particular content creator, Tia Zakher, is going viral on the app after viewers noticed that the influencer may have contracted a fungal infection after taking part in the caveman trend.
"Zakher, who has not washed her face with water or used any skincare products for over six weeks, explained that she is participating in the caveman method after her skin's 'shedding cycle was disrupted from years of over-picking and removing texture manually.'
"The influencer explained that what viewers have identified as a fungal infection is actually just layers of dead skin being naturally removed as the skin barrier works to repair itself."
Some have called Zakher's viral videos a hoax but dermatologists have called out Zakher's promotion of the trend, with Dr Jean Chappell explaining in a TikTok that, 'It is a myth to think that your skin will thrive in a state of neglect'.
John Rampton, the Chief Operating Officer at Media Mister, added: "The idea of a skincare reset may be appealing to some during the age of complicated skincare routines.
"However, it's important to note that cutting out all forms of skincare, particularly washing your face with water, puts your skin's health at risk.
"It's incredibly concerning to see how many influencers are promoting the 'caveman' method, especially since the trend consists of not even applying SPF, which is incredibly harmful for your skin. This is why it's so important to do your own research before following a trend just because it's trending on TikTok."

If you've ever wandered into the skincare aisle and found yourself staring blankly at a label that reads 'contains 5% AHA/BHA/PHA' and thought, is this a face serum or a maths problem? I feel you. As a long-time beauty editor, I've spent years trialling every lotion, potion and peel under the sun, and still, the word acid used to send a small chill down my spine. Isn't acid what they used in that scene in Alien when it burned through the floor? Why would I willingly put that on my face? And who decided skincare should sound like chemistry class anyway? We shouldn't need a degree in molecular biology just to get our glow on. Throw in the endless TikTok tutorials, conflicting advice, and terms like 'chemical exfoliant' and 'skin cycling' and it's enough to make anyone break out in stress-induced hives. But here's the thing, acids (in the skincare world, at least) are not terrifying, bubbling test tubes of doom. They're actually some of the most effective, transformative ingredients in modern skincare. When used correctly, they can clear breakouts, fade pigmentation, smooth out fine lines and give your skin the kind of glow usually reserved for celebrities with suspiciously 'natural' complexions. But, and it's a big but, when used incorrectly, they can leave your face red, raw, and on a first-name basis with your barrier repair cream. The problem is most people have no idea what these acids are, what they do, or how the hell to use them without causing a skin tantrum. I've lost count of how many friends have messaged me in a panic saying, 'I used the red peel from TikTok and now I look like a tomato. Help!' To which I have laughed, and then like the good friend I am, passed on my dermatologist's number ASAP. So, to cut through the confusion (and save your epidermis), I've called in an expert for reinforcement. Skincare guru, dermal therapist and founder of Fresh Face Skin, Amelia Goff, knows acids inside and out – and has broken them down in a way that finally makes sense. Below, she's decoded the chaos in an easy-to-understand explainer of how acids work, and why so many people are using them completely wrong. Let's start with the basics. What actually are acids in skincare? Put simply, they are active ingredients that help exfoliate the skin, either by gently dissolving the glue that holds dead cells on the surface, or by diving deeper into pores to clear congestion. The idea is to encourage cell turnover and help the skin function more effectively. 'Skincare acids are originally derived from natural sources like fruits or plants, but are typically lab-created to be nature-identical for stability and safety,' Amelia told me. 'Their main function is to lower the skin's pH to a slightly more acidic level, which prompts the skin to enter a gentle healing phase.' This, in turn, encourages brighter tone, smoother texture, better hydration, refined pores and fewer breakouts. In other words - they work. And unlike a physical scrub that can scratch or irritate the skin, acids do their job invisibly and more evenly. They've also become wildly popular because they deliver both instant glow and long-term improvement. A two-for-one in the skincare world. How do I know which acid I need? The key is matching the right acid to your skin concern. Here's how Amelia breaks it down: Acne and congestion? Salicylic and azelaic acids are your go-to. Dullness or uneven tone? Try lactic or mandelic acid for a glow-up. Stubborn pigmentation? Glycolic or lactic will help fade dark spots. Ageing skin? A mix of glycolic and lactic acids can help smooth fine lines. Sensitive or dry skin? Stick to PHAs like gluconolactone - gentle but effective. Why does it feel like there are a million different types? Because there are, and they all do slightly different things. That's actually what makes acids so useful. They can be customised to suit your skin type, your goals, and your tolerance. Here's where your skincare vocabulary comes in, according to Amelia. 'Each acid family has a unique structure and benefit profile,' she said. 'They absorb at different speeds and depths, depending on their molecular size.' Sounds great… but can't they also wreck your skin? Yes, 'and that's where most people go wrong' Amelia added. Acids are powerful, but when used incorrectly (or too enthusiastically), they can compromise your skin barrier and lead to dryness, redness, sensitivity, or a hot, stingy mess. 'Acids are not one-size-fits-all,' she warned me. 'Skin barrier health must always come first. If your skin is compromised, acids can set you back.' The biggest mistake she see's people make? Going too hard, too fast - especially with high-potency formulas that promise quick results. When and how should I use acids? It depends on strength, however Amelia recommends: Under one per cent: Safe for daily use - usually built into serums for a subtle pH balance. 3-5 per cent: Use 2-3 times a week for exfoliation and support. 5-10 per cent: Once a week as a treatment – this is your skin reset button. Most acids go on after cleansing and before serums or moisturisers. But check the instructions as brands design their formulas to work a specific way. Morning or night? And what about SPF? Low-strength acids can be used in the morning, but only if they're buffered with hydrating ingredients - and never without SPF. 'Acids can make your skin more sun-sensitive, so daily protection is non-negotiable.' Night is usually the best time for stronger acids as your skin is in repair mode, and you're not battling sun exposure. Can you mix acids with other actives? Technically, yes. But unless you know what you're doing, I wouldn't. 'Active skincare is a marathon, not a race,' Amelia said. 'Rotate your actives and give your skin time to respond.' Her ideal routine looks something like this: AM: Low-strength acid + vitamin C PM: Alternate between vitamin A (like retinol) and a deeper acid exfoliant once a week Always: Hydration, barrier support, and SPF Pictured: Dermalogica Liquid Peelfoliant ($114) and The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution ($10.70) What about professional peels? In-clinic peels use stronger concentrations and should always be done by a professional. They come with downtime (peeling, redness, flaking), but can target deeper concerns like melasma, acne scarring or severe congestion. So there you have it, skincare acids aren't scary, they're just a bit science-y. But they require a little education, a lot of patience, and a solid understanding of your skin's limits. When used properly, they can brighten, smooth and transform, just remember 'less is more - and listen to your skin. Still not sure? Unclench your jaw: Why everyone is grinding their teeth right now — including you
'You've worn your molars right down,' said my dentist, matter-of-factly, as she snapped the latex gloves from her hands. 'I can practically hear your jaw clicking.' I did my best not to feel offended. 'Sorry,' I mumbled, rubbing my aching massester muscles. I'm one of the 8 to 10% of the UK population that grinds their teeth in some way — and I'm betting, you are too. I'm not entirely sure when it started, but these days, I'm all-too-aware that I do it pretty much every night. I've woken myself up one-too-many times by accidentally biting down on my tongue (yes, it really hurts) and when my alarm goes off, I open my eyes with an aching jaw. The habit seeps into my waking hours too. I'll suddenly become aware that my jaw is clenched, as though that's its default position. I once heard (e.g. watched a TikTok video) that the three-finger test is a quick way to asses your jaw mobility. If you can fit three stacked fingers between your upper and lower reeth, you're in the normal range. I can only just about do it. But bruxism, the umbrella term for teeth-grinding or jaw clenching, does more than just make your jaw ache. In fact, it can cause a whole host of issues, from dental problems and headaches, to pain in the face, neck or shoulders, and TMJ disorders. To put it mildly, teeth grinding is no picnic — and it's even more annoying when you consider that you're most likely doing it subconciously. And while the current estimates would suggest that around 6.7 million Brits deal with condition, it seems to be on the rise. Post-pandemic, a USA-based 2021 survey among dentists found that 70% reported an increase in patients grinding and clenching their teeth. More recently, the hashtag #teethgrinding on TikTok has a staggering 262.9 million views, while #unclencyourjaw has 37.7 million. You can even buy tshirts and artwork on Etsy emblazoned with the phrase 'unclench your jaw'. And dentist Dr Sahil Patel, of London's Marylebone Smile Clinic, tells Metro that he's seeing an increasing number of patients displaying signs of bruxism. 'Well developed jaw muscles show as a squarer facial appearance or stronger jawline,' he explains. 'And, on the teeth themselves, bruxism causes accelerated tooth wear and breakage, making teeth look shorter, squarer and yellower. Tooth sensitivity and gum recession can also be a sign.' Why have we become a nation unable to relax our faces? While it's not always clear why people do it, stress and anxiety is a well-observed cause. 'Our patients are absoloutely more stressed than ever,' Dr Sahil says. 'They may not always disclose it to us, but we can sense when someone is stressed. We're seeing it more with younger people.' Mental Health UK's annual Burnout Report, released in January 2025, found that one in three adults either 'always or often' experience high or extreme levels of pressure or stress, while nine in 10 say they've experienced it at some point over the last year. Mind also found that women are more likely than men to experience common mental health problems (20.7% of women compared to 13.2% of men affected), with young women aged 16 to 24 at the highest risk. It's worth nothing that women are also more likely to experience bruxism, particularly when they're awake. Experts are pretty much in agreement that society is increasinly stressful. Chartered psychologist, Dr Manpreet Dhuffar-Pottiwal says we live an era of 'uncertainty and instability'. She tells Metro: 'Political unrest, economic fluctuations, and environmental crises result in an unpredictability which leaves people feeling out of control regarding their futures.' Our 'always-online' culture, particularly experienced by younger generations also doesn't help, as Dr Manpreet says we face 'technological overload.' 'Social media platforms promote curated representations of life, leading us to measure their worth against others. Additionally, urbanisation has contributed to a disconnection from nature. People confined to busy city lives miss out on the calming effects of the natural world.' Workplace pressures have changed too. 'The rise of remote work and gig economies has introduced ambiguity about job security and increased workloads,' says Dr Manpreet. 'Many young employees, striving for stability in uncertain times, experience burnout and chronic stress as they juggle multiple responsibilities. 'Rigid schedules and the lack of work-life balance lead many to neglect self-care practices.' And finally, as ever, the global pandemic plays a part. Dr Manpreet says: 'It heightened health-related anxieties, with individuals increasingly focused on personal safety. 'This ongoing concern can create a cycle of stress that affects various facets of life. 'It's no surprise that there's a growing prevalence of conditions like bruxism.' What are the options for treating jaw clenching? So, aside from taking an indefinite holiday to escape the stressors of daily life, what can we do to relieve all this tension? According to Dr Sahil, your dentist can help. 'We can't manage your stress, but we can do a few things to manage the symptoms,' he says. 'Night guards can cushion the contact between the teeth during the night, or reainers, which are thinner, are designed to keep the teeth in their position and protect from night grinding. 'They come in many different forms and materials, but the ballpark cost for these is between £250 and £500.' Alternatively, nurse prescriber and aesthetic trainer, Natalja Andrejeva, says that Botox is an 'emerging go-to solution' for teeth-grinding. 'Over the past few years, I've seen a noticeable rise in clicents seeking relief from bruxism using Botox, especially post-pandemic,' she tells Metro. 'Botox is injected into the masseter muscles to relax them. This reduces the intensity of clenching and grinding without affecting your ability to chew or speak.' The result? 'Less jaw tension, fewer headaches, and better sleep and quality of life. You'll also get a slightly slimmer jawline,' adds Natalja, founder of Face Code Aesthetic, where she offers the treatment, starting at £290. 'Typically, treatment would be required every three to six months, depending on muscle strength and individual response. 'But over time, some clients find they can space out treatments more as the habit and symptoms lessen.' Of course, the ultimate — and almost impossible solution — is to live a stress-free life.
