WNBA star Sophie Cunningham issued an official apology on Thursday afternoon.
Cunningham, a 28-year-old guard for the Indiana Fever, said Tuesday that she didn't "know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or [Cleveland]," while referencing Miami, Nashville and other U.S. cities. The WNBA announced earlier this week that it would be expanding to three new cities - Detroit, Cleveland and Philadelphia.

"You want to listen to your players, too," she said. "Where do they want to play? Where are they going to get excited to play and draw fans? I do think that Miami would have been a great [location]. Nashville is an amazing city. Kansas City, amazing opportunity.
"I'm not so sure what the thought process is there, but at the end of the day, you want to make sure that you're not expanding our league too fast. I think that that's also another thing. It's kind of a hard decision-making situation. But man, I don't know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or [Cleveland]."
Cunningham, a seven-year WNBA veteran, spent the first six years of her career in Phoenix. She's in her first season in Indianapolis, after getting traded by the Mercury this offseason.

Cunningham grew up in Columbia, Missouri, hardly a major U.S. city.

Cunningham made it clear on Thursday that she didn't intend for any disrespect toward those cities.
"All I was really getting at was broadway, the off-court lifestyle," Cunningham said. "I think it would be fun to get some teams outside of the NBA market...I think people totally misread situation. I would never speak down upon middle-class, blue-collar people."
The WNBA considered a number of different cities for expansion. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said Monday that Miami, Nashville, Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis, Charlotte, Denver and Austin, Texas all made bids for expansion.

The league will start with Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia moving forward.

Johnny Furphy, Quenton Jackson highlight Pacers Summer League Roster

INDIANAPOLIS -- Forward Johnny Furphy, second-round pick Taelon Peter and two-way contract players Quenton Jackson, Enrique Freeman and RayJ Dennis will be part of the Pacers NBA Summer League roster, the Pacers released Friday. The summer Pacers began practice on Friday and play their first game in Las Vegas on Thursday, July 10 at 5 p.m. against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Second-round pick Kameron Jones from Marquette was not on the initial roster released Friday, but a league source confirmed that the reason for that is because the pick the Pacers used to draft him was acquired in a trade with the Spurs and those trades don't become official until Sunday. He is expected to take part in Summer League play. Advertisement Furphy, taken with the No. 35 overall pick, appeared in 50 games this season and averaged 2.1 points and 7.6 minutes per game. He spent time in the rotation in November and early December when the Pacers were depleted with injuries but got most of the rest of his minutes after that in garbage time situations. He played 10 regular season G League games with the Mad Ants and averaged 14.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Re-live the Pacers incredible postseason run with our commemorative book Jackson was the most extensively used of the two-way contract players. He averaged 5.8 points per game for the Pacers and started seven games when they were short-handed. He averaged 22.5 points, 5.7 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game in 16 games with the Mad Ants. Advertisement Also on the roster are rookies Samson Johnson of Connecticut, Steven Ashworth of Creighton and R.J. Felton of East Carolina, all of whom were signed to undrafted free agent contracts after last week's draft, which are likely to become Exhibit 10 contracts. They will eventually be waived but would be do a bonus of close to $75,000 for playing with the Pacers' G League team, which relocated and this season will be called the Noblesville Boom. Guard Keisei Tominaga and forward Josiah Jordan-James -- who played college ball at Nebraska and Tennessee, respectively -- are both on the roster after playing with the Mad Ants last season. The Pacers added four players to the roster who played professionally elsewhere last season. Buddy Boeheim, son of legendary Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, played last season with the Oklahoma City Blue. The 6-6 wing was an All-ACC pick at Syracuse under his father and has been in the G League for the last three seasons. He averaged 12.4 points per game with the Blue last year. Former Wyoming star Hunter Maldonado is on the roster after spending last season playing professionally in Germany. Forward Phillip Wheeler will play for the Summer Pacers after playing five games with the 76ers last year and also playing for both the Celtics and Mavericks' G League squads. Center Robert Baker, who played college ball at Harvard, played last year with the Osceola Magic. Are the Boston Celtics showing signs of "Quiet Quitting"?

Since the 2024-25 NBA season came to an end, Brad Stevens has been making moves. The Boston Celtics have already traded away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. They also lost Luke Kornet in free agency, and could also lose Al Horford in the coming weeks. Of course, there are some new faces heading into Boston, too. Anfernee Simons, Luka Garza and Josh Minott have all been acquired by Stevens. However, it's clear that there's a talent drain occurring in Boston. Currently, as constructed, the Celtics appear closer to a tanking team than a contender. Fortunately, as long as Jaylen Brown and Derrick White are on the roster, the team will remain competitive until Jayson Tatum recovers from his Achilles tendon injury. Still, Boston is likely valuing their 2026 draft picks more than they originally expected to. Advertisement In a recent discussion on the "Zolak and Bertrand Show" for 98.5 The Sports Hub, the term "quiet quitting" was floated around. By keeping Brown and White, the Celtics can't be accused of tanking. However, we are witnessing a managed decline that could be likened to downing tools before the season has even begun. Former Pirates pitcher Luis Ortiz subject of MLB gambling investigation, AP sources say

Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz is the subject of a Major League Baseball gambling investigation and was placed on non-disciplinary leave Thursday, two people with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity due to the nature of the investigation. The 26-year-old is in his first season with Cleveland after he was acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh last December. The Pirates traded Ortiz and two other minor league pitchers in exchange for first baseman Spencer Horwitz. The Pirates signed Ortiz to a minor league contract in 2018. The investigation is related to in-game prop bets on two pitches thrown by Ortiz that received higher activity than usual during his starts at Seattle on June 15 and his recent outing against St. Louis on June 27. The gambling activity on the pitches was flagged by a betting-integrity firm and forwarded to MLB. ESPN reported the firm IC360 recently also sent an alert to sportsbook operators regarding Ortiz. The Athletic was the first to report that Ortiz's suspension was related to gambling. MLB said Ortiz's paid leave is through the end of the All-Star break, when players return to their teams July 17 and games resume the following day. It can be extended if the investigation remains ongoing. Cleveland says it will cooperate with the MLB Chris Antonetti, Cleveland's president of baseball operations, said before Thursday night's game at the Chicago Cubs that the team can continue to have contact with Ortiz, but he can't enter any of the Guardians' facilities. Ortiz returned to Cleveland on Wednesday night. Ortiz was slated to be the starting pitcher for Thursday night's series finale. Instead, left-hander Joey Cantillo was recalled from Triple-A Columbus. Cantillo is 1-0 with one save and a 3.81 ERA in 21 appearances this season. "We learned very little last night, but knew we needed to get someone here today to start today's game, and that really was our focus," Antonetti said. "A lot has come out today, and that's far more information than we have. "Our focus is we'll let the investigative process play out. To the extent Major League Baseball or anyone needs our support in that, we will obviously cooperate. But beyond that, there's really not much we can do." Manager Stephen Vogt said he and Antonetti addressed the team about Ortiz's situation and tried to answer questions the best they could. It is another setback for a Guardians squad that has dropped a season-high six straight games and is 9-18 since May 1. "Honestly, when I got the news yesterday I didn't know how to feel," Vogt said. "There's so much unknowns with this, but you know what? Every team goes through adversity, maybe different kinds, but this is a resilient group. I've been through situations similar to this before in my career as a player, and what would I have wanted to hear? How would I want the manager to have reacted, and that's what I'm trying to do." The right-hander is 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 16 starts this season. The nine losses are tied for the most in the American League. In four big-league seasons, Ortiz is 16-22 with a 4.05 ERA and one save. MLB suspended 5 players for gambling last year The investigation into Ortiz comes a little more than a year after MLB suspended five players for gambling, including a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023. Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor leaguers — San Diego pitcher Jay Groome, Arizona pitcher and Philadelphia infielder José Rodríguez — received one-year suspensions. Umpire Pat Hoberg was fired by Major League Baseball in February for sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games and for intentionally deleting electronic messages pertinent to the league's investigation.
