Rolex celebrates GMT-Master 70th anniversary with exhibition

From May 26 to June 8, the storied timepiece will be the focus of an exhibition at Freespace, in the
West Kowloon Cultural District . Titled 'Time Zone to Time Zone', the show invites visitors to explore the legacy of a watch that has transcended its aviation roots to become a symbol of prestige as much, if not more, as its air-faring forebear.

Born in 1955, the GMT-Master was Rolex's answer to a new era of travel. As jetliners shrank the world and passengers crossed multiple time zones in hours, the need for a reliable, easy-to-read second time zone became paramount. The GMT-Master's signature two-colour 24-hour bezel and an additional hour hand allowed wearers to track home time and local time simultaneously – a breakthrough that quickly popularised the watch among pilots, explorers and travellers alike.
There's plenty to keep both ardent Rolex collectors and casual watch enthusiasts engaged, from a showcase of key milestones in the evolution of the GMT-Master and its successor, the
GMT-Master II , to a curated selection of vintage models preserved by Rolex's Heritage Department, highlighting the watch's technical innovations and design refinements over seven decades.
From the original Plexiglas bezel to the modern ceramic variants, and from the early calibre 1036 movement to today's calibre 3285, the GMT-Master's evolution mirrors that of Rolex, and the wider watch world's, in terms of precision and durability.

Then there are the leaps in craftsmanship such as the watch's luminescent Chromalight display, which was enhanced in 2021 for superior legibility, and the return of the Jubilee bracelet in 2018. In a few weeks, my family and I will leave Hong Kong, a city we have called our second home since June 2021. Much has happened in these four years. The world was in the throes of Covid-19. The airport was a ghost town. A few months later, the Omicron wave hit, holding back the city from reopening. Amid geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic headwinds, the local economy, especially retail, real estate and tourism, suffered. But this dynamic city is bouncing back. First, in a step-by-step, practical manner, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu's administration led the city out of the pandemic in late 2022, putting it on the path of steady recovery. Social restrictions were lifted, and Hong Kong regained international connectivity. Second, law and order as well as social stability have returned. Hong Kong fulfilled its obligation under the Basic Law to enact national security legislation last year. Third, Lee embarked on a transformational exercise to adopt a results-oriented approach to governance. The government is embracing a proactive role in delivering public goods, and fostering new growth engines like mega-event tourism and innovation and technology.

Hong Kong should keep southbound travel plan's 100-car quota flexible: CY Leung
Hong Kong should consider relaxing a proposed 100-vehicle quota for a scheme set to allow Guangdong motorists to drive to the city, former leader Leung Chun-ying has said, suggesting the limit could be adjusted for weekdays and holidays. Advertisement Leung, who now serves as a vice-chairman of the nation's top political advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, raised the suggestion on Saturday. Earlier this week, transport officials said drivers could start applying for the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme from November, with 100 motorists set to be allowed to cross into the city via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge each day. Leung said the policy was a small progressive step towards a larger breakthrough, adding that the government could relax the quota if no accidents or traffic problems arose in the weeks after the scheme's launch.
