Tornado hits Saskatchewan: Huge twister destroys buildings, tosses hay bales, and shocks farmers and storm chasers

Time of India20-06-2025
Southern Saskatchewan was rocked by violent weather Thursday(June 19), as powerful thunderstorms swept across the Canadian
Prairies
, producing a confirmed tornado near Estevan and triggering multiple warnings across the province. Two more potential tornadoes were tracked near Regina and Saskatoon.
The chaotic weather was part of a volatile system that developed across the south-central Prairies, giving rise to several rotating supercells.
Environment Canada
issued tornado warnings for areas ranging from communities near Saskatoon to rural farmland in the southeast. One of the most intense storms occurred near Estevan, where storm spotters confirmed a tornado touchdown.

Along with the tornadoes, Thursday's storms brought intense lightning, torrential rain, strong winds, and large hailstones to many parts of the province.
Storm chasers captured dramatic footage of the twister sweeping across open fields, lifting debris and tossing hay bales into power lines. 'Look at those hay bales getting tossed like toys in front of us,' said
FOX
Weather storm tracker Brandon Copic, who encountered a large, dusty tornado near Alameda. 'Power lines down! Hay bales just got thrown into the power lines. Incredible tornado,' he said during the live chase.
Live Events
Farmer Harold Posehn, who lives near Kronau, was on the road when a funnel cloud formed close to his neighbor's property. 'It did quite a bit of damage to the house, some sheds and storage buildings,' Posehn said. 'It was quite dusty… you couldn't see anything… the truck was rocking pretty good.'
In total, at least three severe thunderstorms prompted tornado warnings on Thursday. The storm near Estevan is the only one so far with a spotter-confirmed tornado, but Environment Canada will be conducting damage surveys in the coming days to confirm other possible touchdowns and assign Enhanced Fujita (EF) ratings.
The twister near Estevan reportedly touched down intermittently for nearly half an hour, sweeping through remote fields and causing visible structural damage. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
The tornado threat extended into neighboring Manitoba and parts of the US Midwest, where related storm systems triggered additional tornado warnings.
This marks the latest episode in what has been an unusually active tornado season across Canada's Prairie provinces. According to Environment Canada, at least six tornadoes have been confirmed in Saskatchewan so far this year.
For those living in affected areas, meteorologists continue to urge vigilance and preparation. 'Know where your safe place is before severe weather strikes,' Environment Canada warned. 'When a tornado warning is issued, take shelter immediately.'

Kolkata logs season's highest rain: Wettest July day in 4 years; temperatures drop, more showers likely

KOLKATA: The city witnessed 87.5mm rainfall between 8.30pm Monday and 8.30pm Tuesday, the highest 24-hour count of the season. Tuesday was also the wettest July day in four years. The rain dragged the maximum temperature down to 27.1°C, this summer's lowest. Alipore Met office has predicted more rain on Wednesday, but with reduced intensity. Prior to Tuesday, 40.3mm rain on June 27 was this monsoon's single-day highest. Three factors — a low-pressure area, a cyclonic circulation and a strong monsoon flow — combined on Tuesday to trigger the night-long showers. While Monday saw pockets of south Kolkata get more rain than neighbourhoods in the north, the incessant rain that started around 2am on Tuesday was more uniform. Most of the day's rainfall was recorded between 2am and 8am. 'The low pressure over Gangetic Bengal is moving very slowly, causing uniform rain. This system will gradually move away towards Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh in the next two days and weaken. Hence, we expect the intensity of rain to decrease in Kolkata by Wednesday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo But some western districts will continue to receive heavy spells of rain,' said meteorologist HR Biswas, head of the weather forecast section at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata. According to an IMD special bulletin, the low-pressure area with an associated cyclonic circulation and a strong monsoon flow will continue to trigger rain in many parts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, for at least another four days. According to the city's Met calendar, July is the rainiest month of the year. With June's total monthly rain count at 241.5 mm, which is normal for the month, Met officials expect July rain to be normal as well. Continuous rain pushed the maximum temperature to 27.1°C, the lowest this summer and 5.4°C below normal. The minimum temperature also dipped to 25°C, which was 1.8°C below normal. The mercury is likely to climb slightly on Wednesday but is still expected to stay below normal.

Jodhpur Park emerges as wettest zone, experts try to figure out why

1 2 Kolkata: Though storm water started receding from most parts of south Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon, neighbourhoods in and around Jodhpur Park and areas along the Anwar Shah connector remained waterlogged until late evening. The KMC-run Jodhpur Park drainage pumping station on Tuesday recorded the highest ever rainfall in its history — 280 mm by 2 pm. The unprecedented rainfall in areas under the drainage pumping station, including Jodhpur Park, Dhakuria, Lake Gardens, Keyatala, Garfa, and large stretches off the Anwar Shah connector (from Jadavpur police station to Avisikta crossing), went under water since Monday evening as torrential rains lashed these areas. The problem was compounded by spells of heavy rains since early Tuesday morning. A baffled KMC administration took several measures to flush out storm water from Jodhpur Park and its adjacent neighbourhoods. However, water receded at a very slow pace as BB canal and the intercepting canal that carried storm water from the Jodhpur Park drainage pumping station were overflowing and failed to carry extra water. As the KMC drainage department bosses received frantic calls from Jodhpur Park, Lake Gardens, and Dhakuria neighbourhoods, the department, out of desperation, sent several jetting-cum-suction machines to these areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo But the situation didn't improve until late evening. "Though storm water receded from several parts of Dhakuria, Jodhpur Park, and Lake Gardens in the evening, some pockets of Jodhpur Park market and large stretches of the Anwar Shah connector remained waterlogged until late evening," conceded a KMC drainage department official. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata A former state bureaucrat who stays in Jodhpur Park sent an SOS to the civic headquarters to flush out stormwater from near his house. "We sent five jetting-cum-suction machines to Jodhpur Park to clear the clogged sewer lines. Though they worked efficiently, the waterlogging scenario took time to change as the outfall canals that carry storm water failed to function," said a KMC official. Reacting to the intensity of rain in Jodhpur Park and its adjacent neighbourhoods, Alipore Met officials said that while the intensity of rain can differ from one locality to another, a massive difference between the localities was unlikely. "The intensity of rain can differ from one locality to another even within the city during spells of incessant rain. But a huge gap sounds aberrant," said Met scientist HR Biswas. Sources confirmed that while a difference of around 10 to 20 mm could happen, especially during incessant rain, between pockets in Kolkata due to localized weather phenomena, a massive difference is very unusual. "Sometimes calibration issues in equipment could also affect the rain count record," said a Met official. According to Met parlance, over 200 mm recorded at Jodhpur Park by the KMC's drainage pumping station comes under the extremely heavy rain category, which can cause massive flooding.
