Bawankule meets sulking Shirsat amid funds diversion controversy
Bawankule visited Shirsat's official bungalow in Mumbai on Wednesday morning, according to people in the know. Shirsat, a Dalit leader, had earlier accused the Ajit Pawar-led state finance department of high-handedness for diverting funds from his department, meant for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes and other underprivileged sections of society, towards the Ladki Bahin scheme without his knowledge. He is also unhappy about corruption charges levelled against him, as he believes the information is being provided to the Opposition from within the government to defame him.
Against this backdrop, Bawankule's visit to Shirsat's residence assumes significance and is being seen as an attempt to ensure cordial relations between the BJP and Shiv Sena. The state BJP chief, however, said that the meeting was to seek the social justice department's contribution for the makeover of Dragon Palace, a Buddhist temple in Kamathi, Nagpur. Bawankule said the state government has allocated ₹214 crore for the makeover, and the ground-breaking ceremony for the work will soon take place. 'I had come to meet the social justice minister to seek his cooperation,' he said.
Shirsat also said that he and Bawankule did not discuss any political matter. 'I had been inviting him to my house for a cup of tea as we share friendly relations. I have assured him full support for the makeover of Dragon Palace,' he said. Shirsat claimed he was not upset over the diversion of funds from his department, adding that he discussed the issue with finance minister Ajit Pawar during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Bawankule said that the Mahayuti government cannot even think of diverting funds meant for Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes.
According to the BJP insiders, the renovation of Dragon Palace is important for the party as it was trailing in the Assembly polls in Kamathi city by 17,000 votes. Bawankule represents the Kamathi constituency and is pushing the renovation project ahead of the upcoming local body polls. 'Kamathi city, where the project is located, is dominated by Dalit votes, and the visit to the residence of Shirsat, who is a Dalit leader, has political symbolism,' the leader said.

In 10 years, train accidents down by 77% in 2024-25, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tells Lok Sabha
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw told Lok Sabha on Wednesday that railway accidents had come down by 77 per cent in 10 years — from 135 in 2014-15 to 31 in 2024-25 — as the Narendra Modi-led government was prioritising safety measures. He added that there was a constant effort to use new technologies to ensure the safety of trains. Vaishnaw said that Kavach, a technology-intensive automatic train protection system, was commissioned under the Make-in-India initiative within a short period, while many developed countries took a few decades to move towards automatic train protection systems despite having a smaller railway network than India. He said that the Kavach version 4.0 would be commissioned fully in a day on the Kota-Mathura track. He added that as Kavach technology required an extensive optical fibre network, a 5,856 km-long optical fibre network had been laid, 619 telecom towers installed, 708 stations equipped with data centres, and 1,107 locomotives installed with a software system. Kavach is operational on 4,000 kilometers of railway track, he said. Vaishnaw was replying to a question posed by Bhumare Sandipanrao Asaram, Shiv Sena MP from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, during the Question Hour. Vaishnaw had faced the heat last year after a stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station claimed 18 lives during the Mahakumbh, leading to demands for his resignation from the Opposition. While the Opposition flagged multiple train mishaps during his tenure, the deadliest train accident under Vaishnaw's leadership was the 2023 Odisha train collision on June 2 near Bahanaga Bazar station, which claimed the lives of 296 people and injured over 1,200 when the Coromandel Express collided with a stationary freight train, and then hit another train.

New Delhi: As Kerala MPs led by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra protested in Parliament over the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion, senior party leader Shashi Tharoor was conspicuously absent. Interestingly, Mr Tharoor was part of a protest on the same issue yesterday, but was not seen today. The absence sparked a buzz as it played out against the backdrop of Mr Tharoor's strained ties with the Congress leadership over his public remarks after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The Thiruvananthapuram MP was part of a protest by Kerala Congress MPs in the Parliament complex yesterday. Holding a placard that read, "India for all, proud to be one", Mr Tharoor told the media yesterday, "The nuns are innocent, they must be released. There should not be mob rule in the country. This is the government's responsibility." At the protest today, Ms Gandhi Vadra said the nuns were accused of things they were not doing. "They were manhandled and then taken away by the Chhattisgarh police. We are protesting against these kinds of attacks on minorities," she told the media. Shashi Tharoor has been making headlines for the past several months for his strained ties with the Congress leadership. An outstanding public speaker, the former diplomat was not on the Congress's list of speakers for the Operation Sindoor debate -- an omission that provided political ammunition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others in the BJP. Sources in the Congress have said that the party had approached Mr Tharoor to speak during the debate, but he refused to toe the party line and said he would not contradict himself "for the sake of party messaging". Mr Tharoor has been on the receiving end of barbs from his party colleagues over his praise of the BJP government's response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Mr Tharoor recently said his "first loyalty" lies with the nation. "Parties are a means of making the nation better. So to my mind, whichever party you belong to, the objective of that party is to create a better India in its own way," he said. The Congress, determined to corner the government on the sudden announcement of the ceasefire by US President Donald Trump and the intelligence failure that led to the Pahalgam attack, did not approve of Mr Tharoor's remarks. Why Were Nuns Arrested Two Kerala-based catholic nuns were arrested at Chhattisgarh's Durg station last week. Bajrang Dal supporters alleged that they were trafficking three minor tribal girls after promising them jobs and education. They have been charged with human trafficking under Section 143 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and forced conversion under the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Act. The incident has sparked a massive row, with Opposition parties led by the Congress accusing the BJP government in Chhattisgarh of targeting minorities. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, has said religious freedom is a constitutional right. "We demand their immediate release and accountability for this injustice," he said. Christian organisations have also voiced their protest. In fact, the Kerala BJP has stressed that the nuns were not involved in any human trafficking or forced conversion attempts. BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said he would make all possible attempts to release the nuns from jail and bring them back home safe. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has defended the arrests, saying he is concerned about the safety of "our daughters of Bastar".
