Egypt begins language exams for tour guides to expand linguistic accreditations - Tourism

Al-Ahram Weekly6 days ago
Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched a new round of language exams for licensed tour guides, allowing them to add one or more foreign languages—including rare ones—to their professional licenses.
The move aims to improve multilingual tourism services, diversify visitor markets, and reduce reliance on translation permits granted to foreign interpreters.
As of 2025, Egypt has around 14,000 licensed tour guides, according to an official from the Egyptian General Tourist Guide Syndicate.
The ministry announced Monday that licensed guides can now apply for the language addition tests via the Central Administration of Corporate Services Portal, with applications open through 31 July 2025.
Exams will be held at the Faculty of Tourism and Hotels at Helwan University, where candidates will be evaluated by university professors and representatives from foreign embassies to ensure language proficiency before accreditations are granted.
According to the ministry, 225 applications were received for this round, and 58 candidates passed. Successful guides were certified in a range of languages, including Portuguese, Turkish, Japanese, Czech, Indonesian, Korean, Greek, Romanian, and Hungarian—languages still underrepresented in Egypt's tourism workforce.
The ministry is also running intensive training programmes for aspiring tour guides with relevant academic backgrounds. More than 300 individuals received training in the first half of 2025 alone.
The initiative is part of Egypt's broader strategy to grow its tourism sector and expand its capacity to serve an increasingly diverse global audience. The government aims to attract 30 million visitors annually by 2028 under a comprehensive national tourism strategy.

MSMEDA expands partnership with Japan's JICA to boost youth-led industrial projects

Bassel Rahmy, CEO of Egypt's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA), has met with Yu Ebisawa, the newly appointed Resident Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Egypt, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation aimed at supporting youth-led industrial and productive enterprises. This marks Ebisawa's first official visit to MSMEDA since assuming his post in 2025. The meeting was attended by Raafat Abbas, Deputy CEO of MSMEDA, along with senior officials from both MSMEDA and JICA. Rahmy reaffirmed the agency's commitment to deepening its collaboration with JICA to transfer Japanese expertise to Egyptian industrial enterprises. He stressed the importance of helping small and medium-sized businesses improve production quality, meet international standards, and increase their ability to serve domestic demand and access global markets. This approach, he noted, aligns with Egypt's broader strategy to reduce imports and preserve foreign currency reserves. The discussions also reviewed the progress of an ongoing technical cooperation project between MSMEDA and JICA, which provides business development services to enhance enterprise competitiveness. Current efforts are concentrated in the food processing sector in Minya and the plastics manufacturing sector in Alexandria. Rahmy noted that future cooperation will focus particularly on expanding support for industrial and feeder industries—sectors that play a critical role in integrated value chains and have significant potential for job creation and economic impact. For his part, Yu Ebisawa expressed his appreciation for the strong and productive partnership with MSMEDA and affirmed JICA's readiness to continue and strengthen cooperation in support of small enterprise development and enhanced productivity across Egypt.

Turkish Amb. Highlights Role of Syrian-Origin Entrepreneurs in Boosting Egypt's Economy

Ahmed Emam Turkish Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Salih Mutlu Şen, praised the contribution of Syrian-origin Turkish entrepreneurs to Egypt's economy during a visit to the headquarters of Al-Andalus, a company founded and operated by Turkish businessmen of Syrian descent in 6th of October City. In a post on X, Ambassador Şen described Al-Andalus as a model of regional cooperation, noting that the firm imports engines from three Turkish companies and provides assembly, maintenance, and repair services in Egypt. He added that the company also plans to launch a local manufacturing line — a move that could deepen industrial ties between Turkey and Egypt. Highlighting the broader impact of migration, Şen emphasized that the 1.5 million Syrian-origin migrants in Egypt are making significant contributions to the economy as businessmen, entrepreneurs, skilled workers, and artisans. 'I believe this community could serve as a driving force for future economic and transportation integration between Turkey, Egypt, and Syria,' the ambassador wrote. Al-Andalus represents a growing trend of transnational entrepreneurship among the Syrian diaspora, especially those with links to Turkey. The ambassador's remarks reflect Ankara's support for grassroots economic initiatives that could complement formal diplomatic and trade relations in the region. Analysts suggest that businesses like Al-Andalus are not only enhancing local industries but also building bridges that may foster deeper regional cooperation in the post-conflict reconstruction of Syria and broader Middle Eastern integration. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language
