Turkish Amb. Highlights Role of Syrian-Origin Entrepreneurs in Boosting Egypt's Economy
Turkish Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Salih Mutlu Şen, praised the contribution of Syrian-origin Turkish entrepreneurs to Egypt's economy during a visit to the headquarters of Al-Andalus, a company founded and operated by Turkish businessmen of Syrian descent in 6th of October City.
In a post on X, Ambassador Şen described Al-Andalus as a model of regional cooperation, noting that the firm imports engines from three Turkish companies and provides assembly, maintenance, and repair services in Egypt. He added that the company also plans to launch a local manufacturing line — a move that could deepen industrial ties between Turkey and Egypt.
Highlighting the broader impact of migration, Şen emphasized that the 1.5 million Syrian-origin migrants in Egypt are making significant contributions to the economy as businessmen, entrepreneurs, skilled workers, and artisans.
'I believe this community could serve as a driving force for future economic and transportation integration between Turkey, Egypt, and Syria,' the ambassador wrote.
Al-Andalus represents a growing trend of transnational entrepreneurship among the Syrian diaspora, especially those with links to Turkey. The ambassador's remarks reflect Ankara's support for grassroots economic initiatives that could complement formal diplomatic and trade relations in the region.
Analysts suggest that businesses like Al-Andalus are not only enhancing local industries but also building bridges that may foster deeper regional cooperation in the post-conflict reconstruction of Syria and broader Middle Eastern integration.

Climate cooperation was also a major theme, with discussions on Egypt's NWFE (Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy) platform and BII's role in financing green hydrogen and clean energy projects. The UK's support for global climate funds—including the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF)—was noted, along with the joint 'Green Growth: Egypt–UK' initiative, which continues through COP30. CAIRO, July 27 (MENA) – Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone call on Sunday with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to discuss developments in the Gaza Strip, as well as the situation in the Horn of Africa and Libya and Egypt's water security. Foreign ministry spokesman Tamim Khallaf said Abdelatty briefed his Italian counterpart on Egypt's efforts to reach a Gaza ceasefire, ensure the flow of humanitarian and relief aid, and alleviate the suffering of Palestinians amid the grave Israeli violations in the enclave. Tajani expressed full appreciation for Egypt's role in mediating a ceasefire and facilitating humanitarian aid access. He also voiced support for the planned Gaza early recovery and reconstruction conference, which Egypt intends to host once a ceasefire is achieved, confirming Italy's participation. The two ministers agreed to maintain close coordination in the coming period to intensify efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire and guaranteeing the delivery of aid to Gaza. Khallaf said that the call also touched on the broader situation in the Horn of Africa, noting that both sides emphasized continued coordination between the two countries, underpinned by strong relations at the leadership level. Abdelatty also raised Egypt's concerns regarding the Nile River and national water security, outlining Egypt's position that shared water resources must be managed in line with international law. Egypt's Telecom Regulator: 650,000 Mobile Phones Entered Duty-Free with Passengers in 2025
Taarek Refaat Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) confirmed on Sunday that over 650,000 mobile phones have entered the country duty-free alongside travelers since the beginning of the year, under the country's mobile device governance system. The authority clarified that the exemption, allowing one mobile device per traveler to enter the country without customs duties, remains in effect as part of the ongoing pilot phase of a broader telecommunications oversight framework. In an official statement, the NTRA denied social media rumors claiming that previously exempted phones would be retroactively taxed or disabled. 'These claims are unfounded,' the statement read. However, the regulator acknowledged detecting abuse of the exemption policy, revealing that approximately 60,000 devices have had their mobile network access suspended pending further investigation. Through a systematic review of the exemption program, the NTRA uncovered 13,000 devices that had illegally benefited from the duty-free rule in violation of regulatory guidelines. These devices remain blocked as of now. Conversely, around 47,000 suspended phones were found to be legitimately exempt and have since been reactivated after verification procedures. Egypt introduced the exemption policy as part of a national framework to regulate and monitor mobile device imports, reduce smuggling, and ensure fair taxation. The initiative is also designed to curb the proliferation of unregistered devices on local telecom networks. The NTRA emphasized its commitment to periodic audits and enforcement, warning against fraudulent attempts to exploit the system.
