No love lost as Rangers say they will not give Celtic a guard of honour

Reuters02-05-2025
May 2 (Reuters) - Rangers will not give arch rivals Celtic a guard of honour when the Scottish champions visit Ibrox Stadium for Sunday's Premiership match, interim boss Barry Ferguson has said, keeping the fierce rivalry very much alive.
Celtic clinched a 13th Scottish Premiership title in 14 seasons last weekend when Brendan Rodgers's side took an unassailable lead with four games to spare.
Celtic also drew level with Rangers on 55 Scottish league titles each, a feat that will sting the blue half of Glasgow ahead of the Old Firm Derby.
"It (guard of honour) has never happened in the past and there's been this huge clamour about it," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "If I put myself in the shoes of a champion, it wouldn't really bother me.
"I think if you ask any of the Celtic players, I don't think it would bother them either. It's always been that way. Let's just continue that way."
It was the same case when Steven Gerrard's Rangers clinched their 55th title in the 2020-21 season, with Celtic's then-interim boss John Kennedy saying they would not even clap their rivals who denied them a 10th straight title.
"But one thing I will do is I will shake Brendan's hand and say, 'Well done for being so dominant,' as there's no doubt that's been the case this year and that's got to hurt," Ferguson added.
"It certainly hurts me and the staff and it's got to hurt the players as well."
Celtic's manager was relaxed either way about a guard of honour.
"It's not in the rules that you have to do it. I think that when two clubs and the rivalry's so emotional, it's always difficult for the team that comes up short," said Rodgers, who has won four Premiership titles with Celtic in two stints.
"I always think if you're a champion or not a champion, showing that humility to the other team, whatever the rivalry is, it's a mark of respect.
"Celtic-Rangers is an emotional rivalry and if you come up short quite a lot then it can be a challenge for you and to justify that with your supporters. But, as I said, I'm a traditionalist."
England, however, will stick with tradition.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca confirmed on Friday that his side would give newly-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge when they meet on Sunday.

Celtic transfer exodus continues with 12th summer exit but Brendan Rodgers puts the brakes on another departure

The Hoops have wasted no time clearing the decks this summer but are in dire need of reinforcements Six in and 12 out. ‌ It's perhaps not the arithmetic Brendan Rodgers had in mind when formulating his transfer masterplan this summer. ‌ Celtic have cleared the decks by getting rid of some deadwood, while also banking a whopping £17million by flogging Nicolas Kuhn. ‌ Throw in the seven-figure bonus from Jeremie Frimpong's switch to Liverpool and the Parkhead coffers are well and truly swelling. On Friday, forgotten Bhoy Adam Montgomery became the latest outcast to leave the building as he sealed a season-long loan switch to Livingston. He follows Scott Bain, Matthew Anderson, Maik Nawrocki (loan), Gustaf Lagerbielke, Liam Bonetig, Luis Palma, Jude Bonnar (loan), Daniel Cummings and Joey Dawson out of the exit door, while Greg Taylor also upped sticks for Greece. South Korean winger Yang was on the scoresheet in Como Cup action and although Norwich City are sniffing around, Rodgers has made it abundantly clear the 23-year-old won't be allowed to go - at least until new faces arrive. Speaking after the 5-1 humbling at the hands of Ajax, the gaffer said: "I see Yang as an important member of our squad. He's a player that showed that domestically he can play well for us, and really well. ‌ "He scored goals. He created goals. You see tonight that the goal he scored is very, very good. "It's always a challenge, I think, at a club like Celtic, whenever players have maybe been for a couple of seasons and they're not quite established. "Because then they want to go and play more. But certainly at this stage, where we're at within the squad, it's not something I can even entertain. You see he's starting the games. ‌ "And I see him as an important player for us in our squad. And once we can get the quality around him, then he'll be a good player for us. 'It's hard to say. At this moment in time, he's a starting winger for us. So we're not in a position to be moving him on. At this moment in time, it's not even in our thinking really." With Jota crocked until 2026, Celts have been depleted of wide options. Marco Tilio has agreed to an initial loan move to Rapid Vienna, but it's unlikely the deal will be rubber-stamped until Rodgers lands further reinforcements. Talks are ongoing with Royal Antwerp over a swoop for Michel-Ange Balikwisha but as things stand, both clubs have yet to find a middle ground over the £5m asking fee. As Record Sport revealed, the Hoops are also looking for a main striker and another midfielder remains a top priority. Hearts and Hibs men of past make Hamilton move Hibs favourite Kevin Harper, who has previously managed at Albion Rovers, comes in as an U17s coach while another ex-Hibee in Darryl Duffy has also moved in behind the scenes. Michael Tidser is in the system in his first job after a tough stint with Dunfermline Athletic and Jason Little makes up the additions. Why Hamilton have been hit with transfer embargo 'These changes reflect our vision to build a sustainable, performance-driven Academy aligned with national and international best practice. Our ambition remains clear – to provide our young players with an elite environment that prepares them for the demands of senior football while developing them as people and professionals.' An SPFL statement on the transfer embargo reads: 'The SPFL can today confirm that an independent disciplinary tribunal has imposed a season-long transfer embargo on Hamilton Academical FC. The William Hill League 1 club was already subject to a transfer embargo following remuneration and tax defaults which were determined or admitted during season 2024/25. Any SPFL club that fails to settle its tax obligations or pay its players on time is subject to an automatic transfer embargo under SPFL Rules. 'At a hearing which took place on Thursday 24 July, Hamilton Academical FC admitted to further breaches of SPFL Rules by failing to settle its tax obligations to HMRC on three occasions, and for failing to notify the SPFL that it had been in default of its tax obligations to HMRC on each occasion, as required by SPFL Rules. Following these latest admitted breaches by the club, an independent disciplinary tribunal imposed the following sanctions. A transfer embargo which will remain in place until the opening of the registration window, which follows the end of season 2025/26 and a fine of £7,500 - £5,000 of which is suspended.'

Livingston sign Adam Montgomery on season-long loan from Celtic

Livingston have signed Adam Montgomery on a season-long loan from Celtic. David Martindale has added the 23-year-old to his squad for the duration of the 2025/26 campaign as he prepares for the Premiership's return. Montgomery made his debut for the Hoops in 2019 but has found first-team football hard to come by at Parkhead and has spent the majority of the last five years out on loan. He has had spells at a string of clubs including Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Fleetwood Town and Motherwell. Last season he was in the Championship with Queen's Park. Livi confirmed the signing with a statement on social media on Friday, saying: 'We're delighted to welcome Adam Montgomery who joins the Lions on loan from Celtic for the 2025/26 campaign.'
