SA has one KFC outlet for every 58,000 people, but demand for finger lickin' good fried chicken still outstrips supply. That's why the brand is asking all South Africans to help it identify new potential sites to open even more locations.
In return, until the end of 2025 it is offering a finder's fee of R60,000 for site recommendations that lead to a successfully opened restaurant or drive-through.
KFC is the one of the fastest-growing quick service restaurant (QSR) brands in SA, Africa and the world. Globally, it has more than 30,000 restaurants in over 150 countries, employing nearly a million people.
Its 1,500 restaurants in 22 African markets employ more than 40,000 people from SA in the south to Senegal in the west and Mauritius in the east. It has close to 1,200 outlets in SA alone.
KFC Africa's GM Akhona Qengqe says the brand's transformative impact as a growth igniter has had a profound impact on the communities where it operates, improving local infrastructure, boosting the economy and creating employment.
'We create sustainable wealth and employment across Africa,' she says. 'Each restaurant creates an average of 35 direct jobs, provides a modern hub for communities to connect, and delivers high-quality meals made with the best ingredients.'
Qengqe says KFC Africa is also a respected leader in social impact, women empowerment and incubating talent. Growth and innovation
SA's QSR sector leads the world in terms of growth and innovation. It was valued at $2.7bn in 2018 and is projected to reach $4.9bn (about R87bn) by 2026, driven by urbanisation and growing demand.
KFC's track record of growth means it leads the industry in new builds and has the most sustainable footprint, with the fewest restaurant closures across all markets. Every new restaurant is built to KFC's Building Green global standards, with 11 'must-haves' to create a healthy and environmentally friendly environment.
KFC is constantly exploring how to push the boundaries to reduce energy and water consumption in each restaurant, and is well on track to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030. All KFC packaging is made from certified sustainable sources and is fully recyclable.

Despite the looming threat of tariffs, South Africa's domestic new-vehicle market continued full throttle in July, delivering the highest monthly sales since October 2019. In the tenth straight month of increased volumes, 51,383 units were delivered last month, up 15.6% from July 2024, which industry body Naamsa attributed to improving consumer confidence, favourable credit conditions and a steady recovery in disposable incomes. It firmly re-established pre-Covid-19 levels and momentum in the market's recovery. Passenger cars were the best performing segment last month at 36,248 units, the highest since January 2017 and a gain of 20.1% compared to July 2024. Car rental sales accounted for 14% of last month's figure. Sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and minibuses at 12,356 units were 6.9% higher than July 2024. Medium trucks sold 703 units (+13.9%) while heavy trucks and buses dropped 1.3% to 2,076 units. The much-welcomed decision by the Reserve Bank in July to further reduce the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7% — its third cut this year — will further inject much-needed stimulus into the economy, said Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa. 'Encouragingly, household credit extension has continued to improve, while consumer sentiment is rebounding — especially among middle- and upper-income groups. The implementation of pension reforms has also unlocked additional liquidity for big-ticket purchases such as vehicles. This positive trend is further reinforced by improved logistics performance, a more stable electricity supply and a sustained demand for high-spec, cost-effective vehicles across market segments,' he said. Year-to-date sales of 330,274 new vehicles this year were 13.9% up on the first seven months of 2024. 'There remains a direct correlation between the rate-cutting cycle and the upturn in new vehicle sales,' said Lebo Gaoaketse, head of marketing and communication at WesBank. 'The market should continue to expect growth if interest rates remain lower.' 'The cumulative interest rate cut of 1.25% since the cycle started is saving a typical new car buyer about R257 per month. The sweet spot of the new vehicle market is a price point of R370,000 according to WesBank's book. More critically, the interest saving over the loan period could be over R18,500, which shows the impact lower rates have on stimulating the market and aiding affordability.' Vehicle exports have shown resilience in the face of the 25% automotive tariffs imposed by the US in April. Export volumes last month decreased 1.9% to 35,379 units compared to July 2024, but year-to-date exports were still 2.5% ahead of the same period in 2024. However, the 30% tariffs imposed on South Africa from this month are expected to cause economic headwinds for some local motor manufacturers. 'Despite global uncertainty and the looming threat of tariffs, South Africa's vehicle market continues to show remarkable resilience,' said Brandon Cohen, chair of the National Automobile Dealers' Association (NADA). A key contributor to the robust passenger market is the growing influence of Chinese and Asian vehicle brands, he said. Four Chinese importers are now among the top 15 best-sellers, including newer entrants such as Omoda/Jaecoo and Jetour. 'Financial institutions have also shown confidence in these brands by offering white-labelled finance packages, further supporting their market penetration. Meanwhile, manufacturers like Kia and Mahindra continue to feature prominently in the top 10, reflecting strong demand for affordable, value-driven options, a trend that has also underpinned Suzuki's consistent success. 'The rapid rise of Chinese and Asian brands reflects a shift in buyer preferences towards affordability and value. It's a trend we expect to intensify as more brands enter the market,' said Cohen. Weekly economic wrap: all about the tariffs

The week had good and bad news for South Africans with a 25 basis point cut in the repo rate but a US tariff of 30%. It was a busy economic week, but everybody agrees that everything else was overshadowed by the latest US tariff announcement from the White House, which slapped a 30% tariff on South Africa that will apply from 7 August. Tracey-Lee Solomon, an economist at the Bureau for Economic Research (BER), says the unanimous decision of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7%, bringing the prime rate to 10.5%, was also important. Then the White House announced its sweeping new trade policy in the early hours of Friday morning, with a tariff of 30% for South Africa. This had an immediate effect on commodity prices and the rand. Solomon says Brent crude traded above $73 a barrel after President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Indian exports and penalties for its Russian oil purchases, she says. 'Trump also warned of tariffs on Moscow unless a swift truce in Ukraine is reached, potentially triggering secondary sanctions on buyers of Russian crude. This move would likely result in more demand for non-Russian crude, lifting prices.' 'The rand weakened by 2.8% against the US dollar, weighed down by broad dollar strength and South Africa's failure to secure a more favourable trade deal with the US, which likely added to negative sentiment.' ALSO READ: US tariff of 30%: Rand weakest in 3 months, thousands of jobs in danger US Fed, in middle of US tariff chaos, did not change repo rate Bianca Botes, director at Citadel Global, says at the centre of the chaos stood the US Federal Reserve, which held rates unchanged at 4.25% to 4.5%. 'The South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) delivered a 25 basis point cut. This was not a bold or symbolic move by the Sarb; just necessary.' She also noted that gold prices consolidated near $3,292/ounce, ending the week 2% softer after the stellar dollar run although support persisted for gold as a defensive asset, despite the selloff this week, as central banks and safe haven seekers continue to find security in its glimmer. 'Brent crude remained above $71/barrel, supported by anticipation of new trade agreements and supply constraints, including tightening conditions in the diesel market. Risks from potential new tariffs and weak consumer data in some major economies capped stronger gains.' Busisiwe Nkonki and Isaac Matshego, economists at the Nedbank Group Economic Unit, also believe the rand came under renewed pressure after the US tariff announcement that he would impose a further 10% import tariff on the Brics countries and any other economy aligned with the grouping. ALSO READ: Repo rate cut not a surprise but very welcome Reserve Bank lowers repo rate to 7% as expected Damian Maart, an economist at the BER, says, as expected, the MPC decided to lower the repo rate by 25 basis points in a unanimous decision that brings the repo rate to 7% and the prime rate to 10.5%. 'A key takeaway from the MPC press conference was the announcement that future MPC decisions would be anchored around the lower bound of the 3-6% target band. Sarb governor Lesetja Kganyago noted that this was not an official change in the target, as it would mandate approval from the National Treasury. 'June consumer inflation was in line with the preferred rate, but the Sarb expects inflation to pick up over the next few months. Looking ahead, the Sarb's Quarterly Projection Model based on the newly adopted 3% target suggests five more cuts over the medium term, although the MPC is not beholden to the 3% inflation target. Nkonki and Matshego say ultimately the interest rate path will depend on how quickly the Sarb can calibrate inflation expectations and price setting throughout the economy around the lower target. Mamello Matikinca-Ngwenya, Siphamandla Mkhwanazi, Thanda Sithole, and Koketso Mano, economists at FNB, say the MPC statement had few surprises. 'This repo rate cut highlighted the MPC's ability to focus on local dynamics given the limited impact of global volatility on the rand and, by extension, monetary policy.' ALSO READ: Good news for GDP: Manufacturing PMI reaches above 50 points, but employment levels still weak Producer price picked up in June According to Statistics SA, the producer price index (PPI) increased by 0.6% in June, up from 0.1% in May. The uptick was primarily driven by higher producer prices for food, beverages, and tobacco products, which increased by 4% and contributed 1.2 percentage points to overall producer inflation. In contrast, prices for coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products declined by 4.7%, subtracting 1%. On a monthly basis, PPI rose by 0.2% in June. Nkonki and Matshego say the PPI outcome was slightly lower than their forecast of 0.8% but aligned with the market's expectations. 'The main driver of the rise was the 'food, beverages and tobacco products category, which rose by 4% with upward pressure coming from meat prices. Elsewhere, price pressures remained relatively subdued or fell further.' Matikinca-Ngwenya, Mkhwanazi, Sithole and Mano say they expect producer inflation to gradually rise in the second half of 2025 but remain benign, averaging around 1.2% this year.
