Libyan accused of war crimes arrested in Germany, ICC says

The Hague, Jul 18 (AP) A Libyan accused by the International Criminal Court of crimes against humanity and war crimes has been arrested in Germany on a sealed arrest warrant, the court announced Friday.
Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri was allegedly one of the most senior officials at Miriga Prison in Tripoli where thousands of people were detained. He was arrested Wednesday based on a warrant issued by the court on July 10.
'He is suspected of having committed directly himself, ordered or overseen crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, torture, rape and sexual violence, allegedly committed in Libya from February 2015 to early 2020," the ICC said in a statement.
El Hishri will remain in custody in Germany until legal proceedings to have him transported to The Hague are completed.
The court relies on other countries to execute its arrest warrants. It paid tribute to German authorities for detaining El Hishri.
'I thank the national authorities for their strong and consistent cooperation with the Court, including leading to this recent arrest," ICC Registrar Osvaldo Zavala Giler said in a statement.
The United Nations Security Council called on the ICC to open an investigation in Libya in 2011 amid violence that led to the toppling of Moammar Gadhafi and morphed into a crippling civil war. The court issued a warrant for the longtime Libyan strongman, but he was killed by rebels before he could be detained.
The court has arrest warrants out for eight other Libyan suspects, including one of Gadhafi's sons. Earlier this year, authorities in Libya accepted the court's jurisdiction over the country from 2011 through to the end of 2027. (AP) SCY SCY

MUMBAI: Barely three months into the formation of the government, Dhananjay Munde, a senior minister from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), resigned from the cabinet, following a controversy over the alleged role of his close aide Walmik Karad in the murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. People in the know have told HT that Fadnavis met union home minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda during his visit. 'The CM is of the opinion that action needs to be taken against the errant ministers to set an example. The controversies around these ministers have dented the image of the government, which the CM has conveyed to his two deputies. He is expected to hold a meeting with both early next week,' said a senior BJP leader, requesting anonymity. The leader however clarified that immediate action was unlikely as it will 'give fodder to the opposition to rejoice and seek credit for action taken on them'. 'The government faced embarrassment when then food and civil supplies minister Dhananjay Munde resigned, after his pictures related to Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh's murder popped up on social media, leading to anguish in the Maratha community. Any further resignations will only deepen the embarrassment for the government, which has not even completed a year,' said the leader. 'A reshuffle of portfolios held by the tainted ministers is likely over the next few weeks. They may be given insignificant portfolios.' After meeting Fadnavis on Thursday in the Capital, Maharashtra NCP president Sunil Tatkare reached Pune to meet the NCP president Ajit Pawar on Friday evening. While details of the meeting have been kept under wraps, people in the know shared that it went on for a long time. 'The state president had a meeting with the chief minister late on Thursday evening. He then met Ajit dada, which indicates something is going on. But whether the party wants to take any action against its minister is yet to be seen. Ultimately, it will be the party's decision,' said a senior NCP functionary, wishing anonymity. Earlier, speaking about the possible resignation of Kokate, Ajit Pawar told mediapersons in Pune on Thursday that 'it is the prerogative of the CM'. Munde was recently given a clean chit by the Bombay high court from the allegation of corruption in the purchase of agricultural equipment when he was agriculture minister until October 2024. 'We are looking into another case related to him in which a judicial probe is going on. If he gets a clean chit from it, he may be inducted back in the cabinet,' said Pawar.

‘Very Close To US Trade Deal': Pakistan Jumps The Gun As Washington Maintains Silence

Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday said that his country and the United States were 'very close" to a trade deal, and it could be 'just days" before it's finalised. However, Washington did not issue any timeline for the same and maintained dead silence on Dar's claims. 'I think we are very close to finalizing a deal with the US. Our teams have been here in Washington, discussing, having virtual meetings, and a committee has been tasked by the prime minister to fine-tune now," Dar said in a discussion at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington, news agency Reuters reported. 'It's not going to be months, not even weeks, I would say (just) days," he said. US President Donald Trump has imposed hefty tariffs on several countries, prompting nations to carry out trade negotiations with the US. He has so far announced trade deals with the UK, Indonesia, and Japan. Separate statements from the US State Department and Pakistan's foreign ministry after Marco Rubio's meeting with Dar said that the two sides discussed expanding trade and ties in critical minerals and mining. However, neither the State Department's statement nor Rubio's post on X mentioned any timeline for finalising or announcing a trade deal with Pakistan. 'Met with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister @MIshaqDar50 today to discuss expanding bilateral trade and enhancing collaboration in the critical minerals sector.
