Coovercolly Pushpalatha Chandrashekar Media Award presented to journalist Ismail Kandakere

Hans India09-06-2025
Madikeri: Journalist K.M. Ismail Kandakere has been conferred the Coovercolly Pushpalatha Chandrashekar Media Award by the Kodagu Press Club for his compelling human-interest report titled 'The roof of Meena's house is leaking.'
The report narrates the harrowing story of Meena (16), an SSLC student from Mutlu village in Somwarpet taluk, who was brutally murdered by her fiancé Monnanda Prakash on May 10, 2024. Although the couple was engaged in April, Meena had opposed an early marriage to continue her education. Enraged by her resistance, Prakash allegedly attacked and killed her with a sickle at her home.
Ismail's story went beyond the crime to highlight Meena's dire living conditions. Her house, dilapidated and leaking during the rains, symbolized the poverty the family endured. The report resonated across Karnataka, prompting public outrage and swift political response.
Moved by the family's plight, Madikeri MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda visited the bereaved parents in May 2024 and pledged to build a new home for them at an estimated cost of ₹8.5 lakh. True to his word, the house was completed and handed over to Meena's parents on May 9, a day before her first death anniversary.
The award was instituted by senior journalist Coovercolly Indresh, along with his siblings Savitha, Sundresh, and Chandresh, in memory of their parents B.V. Chandrashekar and Pushpalatha. A corpus fund of ₹1 lakh was deposited with the Kodagu Press Club to support the annual award. The recognition includes a cash prize of ₹5,000 and a memento.
Ravishankar Nanaiah, Special Officer of Kodagu University, presented the award during a ceremony held at Patrika Bhavan in Madikeri on Sunday.

He gave these instructions during a meeting, which was also attended by all district magistrates (DMs) via videoconferencing. The CS directed the DMs to prepare appropriate action plans for the vehicle-checking drives with their respective senior superintendents of police or SPs. The DMs of Nawada and Sheohar already shared their action plans at the meeting. Meena said the state govt is fully committed to controlling criminal activities. HC denies bail to ACB addl SP in monthly bribe case

Jaipur: Nearly two months after the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) exposed a bribery network and arrested its own additional SP, Surendra Kumar Sharma, the Rajasthan High Court Tuesday refused to grant him bail. At the same time, the court approved bail for district transport officer Poonyaram Meena, who was accused of supplying bribe money to Sharma in exchange for protection from action. Meena's lawyers told the court that his name was not mentioned in the First Information Report and there was no direct evidence linking him to the alleged bribes. They said he was implicated only through statements made by co-accused persons and that no cash was recovered from him. The court also considered that another co-accused, Vivek Soni, was already granted bail on June 27. During the hearing, the public prosecutor argued that Meena, while serving as district transport officer, directed co-accused Pradeep Pareek to deposit Rs 50,000 as bribe money into a builder's account for a plot registered in Meena's wife's name. The court was shown WhatsApp screenshots of the alleged transaction. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo It was also alleged that Pareek delivered Rs 65,000 every month to Meena, which was then shared among other officers, including an additional SP and a police inspector. Meena's defence said the screenshots could not be treated as solid evidence and that no independent proof supported the claims. The court noted that the material on record did not justify keeping him in custody further. Considering the time he spent behind bars, the court ordered his release on bail. Meena was directed to provide a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and two sureties of Rs 50,000 each and to appear before the trial court whenever required. Sharma, who was arrested on May 20, was denied bail in a separate ruling on Tuesday. His lawyer argued that no bribe money or illegal items were seized from him and that he had no previous criminal record. The prosecution countered that Sharma, while posted in the Anti-Corruption Bureau, worked with others to collect bribes from transporters and received a share through intermediaries. The court, citing recorded calls and earlier complaints that he demanded Rs 1 lakh, said the allegations pointed to a continuing pattern of corruption and refused to release him on bail.
