US aircraft carrier commander relieved of duty following collision with ship near Suez Canal

The US Navy announced on Thursday that it had relieved the commander of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman of his duty after it collided with a commercial ship in the Mediterranean Sea near the entrance to the Suez Canal in Egypt, CNN Arabic reported on Friday.
Captain Dave Snowden, who has held the position since December 2023, was commanding the aircraft carrier when it collided with a ship near Port Said, Egypt on February 12.
The US Navy said in a statement that it 'holds commanding officers to the highest standard and takes action to hold them accountable when those standards are not met.'
The incident resulted in no deaths or injures, and the exact cause remains unclear. The collision damaged the outer walls of two storage rooms and caused damage to the carrier's exterior.
The carrier had been operating in the Middle East for the past few months prior to sailing to Greece for emergency repairs to its starboard side.
The commanding officer of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, Captain Christopher Hill will temporarily serve as the USS Harry S. Truman's interim commanding officer.
Hill was in charge of the Eisenhower during an extended mission in the Middle East, where the carrier participated in operations against Huthi rebels in Yemen.

Israel military intercepts Huthi missile fired from Yemen - Region

Sirens sounded in several Israeli cities, including Jerusalem, on Tuesday as the military said it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, with Huthi rebels later claiming the attack. "Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the Israeli air force", the military said in a statement. The Houthis later claimed the attack, saying they had fired a missile at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv. Yemen's Houthi rebels have launched repeated missile and drone attacks against Israel since the war in Gaza began on 7 October 2023. The Houthis, who say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians, paused their attacks during a two-month ceasefire in Gaza that ended in March, but renewed them after Israel resumed major operations. Israel has carried out several retaliatory strikes in Yemen, targeting Houthi-held ports and the airport in the rebel-held capital Sanaa. * This story was edited by Ahram Online. Iran confronts US destroyer in Gulf of Oman - Region

Iranian forces confronted a US destroyer in the Gulf of Oman on Wednesday, warning it to stay out of waters claimed by Tehran, state television reported. The latest reported confrontation between the two rivals comes a month after the United States struck the Islamic Republic on June 22, hitting key Iranian nuclear sites during a 12-day war with Israel. State TV said that an Iranian army helicopter flew over the USS Fitzgerald at about 10:00 am (0630 GMT) on Wednesday after the vessel "attempted to approach the waters under the supervision" of Iran. The destroyer issued threats of its own, the broadcaster said, but "the Iranian pilot... reiterated the warning to stay away from Iranian waters", forcing the US vessel to "give in" and alter its course. There was no immediate comment from the US Navy. In a video released by Iranian state TV, a destroyer is seen from what seems to be a helicopter window as the pilot calls on the vessel to "change course" and avoid approaching Iranian territorial waters. Iranian forces have a history of confronting US forces in bodies of water off the country's southern coast, like the Gulf of Oman. In 2023, Tehran said it forced a US submarine to surface while crossing the strategic Strait of Hormuz -- a claim Washington denied. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Israel says intercepted missile fired from Yemen - Region

Yemen's Huthi rebels launched two attacks targeting Israel's main airport, the latest on Tuesday, with the Israeli army intercepting both, a day after striking the rebel-held Yemeni port of Hodeida. Israel has repeatedly struck Huthi-held parts of Yemen after the Iran-backed rebels began targeting the country with missile and drone attacks, claiming solidarity with Palestinians over the Gaza war. The Huthis targeted Ben Gurion International Airport "using a 'Palestine 2' hypersonic ballistic missile", according to military spokesman Yarya Saree, who had hours earlier claimed a similar attack on the airport. On Monday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said "Yemen's fate will be the same as Tehran's" after hitting Huthi targets in Hodeida port in an attack aimed to prevent any attempt to restore infrastructure previously hit. A Huthi security official, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, told AFP that "the bombing destroyed the port's dock, which had been rebuilt following previous strikes." The Huthis recently resumed deadly attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, targeting ships they accuse of having links to Israel, to put pressure on Israel to end the Gaza war.
